    It's not a question of better or worse - it's a question of what you want to sound like. The strat is one of the orthodox sounds in rock music, but the Jazzmaster presents possibilities that one may not have considered otherwise. It's like choosing between London and Prague - most of us know what we're going to find in London, and it's a great city, but Prague presents possibilities we probably haven't considered.
    Great video, bro. Very illustrative.

    Awesome first video! I've also just started to put some videos up on UA-cam to keep track of my progress on guitar as I'm relearning the instrument (took a really long break from it). I own a Johnny Marr Jaguar and recently bought a used MIJ Strat '57 and MIJ Jazzmaster and I love them all. I agree with your assessment of the Jazzmaster's tone vs the Strat. They're both fantastic in their own way, they both have the Fender sweetness and bell-like cleans. The Jazzmaster has a bit more of that sparkle and chime to my ears and is especially good for surf style playing.

    Hey Sam, this is a great first video! I hope to see many more. You might want to add a little better "video lighting" to your studio. It was just a little dark. I really liked your comparison of these two Fender Guitars. Most of us know about the ubiquitous Stratocaster and bringing the Jazzmaster into the arena makes for a great comparison. As George mentioned the pickups make a huge difference in this and any other guitar. But the unique features and switching of the Jazzmaster really illustrates some of its often overlooked capabilities, especially with the time-based effects.

    I have owned a '63 Strat and presently a 2007 Strat VG and a Haze Jazzmaster with P 90 pick ups. Upgraded the trem to a Fender unit, along with a Fender bridge and nut. Really enjoyed playing it but then decided I wanted a real Fender Jazzmaster and loved the features on the new American Pro II Jazzmaster so I bought one last year. Fender finally solved all the problems of the old Jazzmaster plus added new features such as the new Panorama tremolo, which is far better than the original, new bridge (no more high e string popping out, and adjustable neck angle, plus other new features including a push pull tone knob which gives you a choice of a modern tone or a vintage brighter tone with the bridge pup. Occasionally, I will pull down my Strat VG and play it and even though it has over 40 different sounds such as modeled humbucker mode, Tele and even 12 string modes (both acoustic and electric) I go right back to the Am Pro II. I just love how it sounds and feels. And it has plenty of different tones to satisfy most of what I play. Thanks for your comparison.

    Very good video. Myself, I prefer the extra mids and low-end that the Jazzmaster has. It just sounds sweeter and more musical to my ears. More complete. Plus, I really like the chimey, clanky-sounding middle position a Jazzmaster has as well. It's a sound that a guitar with three pickups just cannot produce. However, I do like the Strat sound and the sounds other people can get out of it, but for the style of playing I do it's never really suited me and I've never been able to truly make a Strat sing like it does in the hands of other people. Also, I just don't like the ergonomics of a Strat either. But for me, the ergonomics of a Jazzmaster, as well as its sound just suits my playing style much better.

    Nice comparison.
    Let's just make some things clear:
    Pickups played a major part here.
    Texas Specials are super honky and you Montys (btw I was aware of Montys over here in Greece) are meant to be beefy as they get.
    Pre CBS style pickups for your strat would have taken it into that territory too, especially ones designed for "bell tone".
    It really was apples to oranges due to pickup selection alone.
    Cheers, loved the presentation as a total.

    • @samwestguitar
      @samwestguitar  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for watching George, really appreciate it!
      And defiantly, Texas specials sure are on the hotter end of strat pickups! Wasn’t aware of the Montys beefy reputation, I know they do a retro wind version of the pickup that’s supposed to be even more beefy!
      It’s awesome that monty’s are starting to gain a bit of international recognition, not sure they’ve quite hit the mainstream in the states yet!

      @meiji... 7 місяців тому +3

      Pickup coil position matters a lot too. Different position = different harmonic content picked up by the coil.
      The Neck PU coil on the Jazzmaster is slightly closer to the bridge than on the Strat, and the Bridge PU coil on the Strat is slanted but the one on the Jazzmaster is not.
      It's similar to the difference between a SG and a Les Paul.
      The SG has a thin neck joint, so the neck pickup is placed closer to the bridge compared to a Les Paul, making the SG neck pickup more "bitey".
      Another known example of the neck pickup shift is comparing a PRS 24 to a PRS 22.
      Due to the 24th fret, the PRS 24 has its neck pickup placed closer towards the bridge.

    Owning both I can say the Jazzmaster feels a lot more comfortable, the offset plus the contours wraps nicely around the body. The rhythm circuit is a charm for actual jazz hybrid picking, and the vibrato has a better action, even when compared to a floated Strat trem.

    • @mattdylan664

      saying one model is more comfortable than the other is a bit misleading as both guitars have been made for years and many come with different neck shapes (some with wider or thinner necks) or with different fretboard radius' or fretwire height and width), and even the bodies on the different models will vary slightly but enough to notice a difference, some with belly cuts some without etc i.e. i own three different Stratocasters an American Fender a Japanese Fender and an Indonesian Classic Vibe Squier and all three play and feel distinctly different - granted the main difference in feel for me is due primarily to the necks each being different , and also there is string height/action to consider,a guitar whose strings are set too high may feel uncomfortable until you set up your guitar and suddenly with just the slightest truss rod adjustment you find it now plays almost effortlessly, anyway just some food for thought.

      Originally I did have quite alot of hum, there’s a few things I’d suggest if you have a the same problem.
      If it only buzzes when you’re not touching the strings then it’s probably a grounding issue, I’d suggest running a wire off the volume pot to the bridge pin if that’s the case.
      If it hums continuously and increased in volume when you put it near other electrical objects like lights I would suggest insulating the pick-up bay and pick guard. You can do this with any conductive metal tape(this made the biggest difference for me)

For me the biggest difference for me between my Strats and Jazzmasters is the trem system and how unique the trem sound is on the Jazzmaster compared to the standard trem sound of the Strat. My only feedback is that for comparisons, I think it's best to keep demonstrations simple. Best demos for me is just slowly strumming or arpeggiating an open C chord. Because everyone knows what that sounds like. When someone plays at an advance level, it doesn't really help beginner to intermediate players really understand the differences between what is being demoed.

    That bridge pick up on the Strat has a very distinctive classic lead sound. Everything else I prefer the Jazzmaster in comparison but I am bias because I've been playing them 30 years. May I ask why you why you have Tele necks on your guitars here..? Hey nick! Thanks for watching and commenting! I completely get what you’re saying about the bridge pick-up on the strat, really cuts through the mix like nothing else!
      And in regards to the tele neck, I wasn’t a fan of the specific neck profile on the original strat neck, it was a v cut which I find quite uncomfortable, so I had a look online for a thicker vintage C type neck and the only thing I could find in stock that had a profile like that was the tele neck!😆

      @@nicknewman7848 ahh awesome! To be honest If your swapping a fender neck with another fender neck that is the same scale length I don’t think you’ll have a problem. The only thing you need to watch out for is the the neck heal, strats and jazzmasters have a curved neck heal whilst tele neck heels are flat. All that basically means is that if you wanted to put a neck with flat neck heal on you’d have to file the neck joint on the body down so that it fits. If you look at some pictures of strats and teles you’ll be able to see what I mean!

    • @samwestguitar
      @samwestguitar  Рік тому +1

      Other than that obviously you’ll have to give the guitar a set up once the neck is on and you’ll probably have to get yourself some nut files to file down the nut on the new neck.(if the replacement neck is new that is) There loads of tutorials on UA-cam all about doing that and it’s not particularly difficult!

    In the end, it doesn’t matter. Which PARTICULAR guitar makes one excited to play and feels ‘right’ in the moment? That’s really about it. On record, nobody cares and, unless you are doing something that is unique to each guitar, nobody can tell which is which with accuracy and certainty.
    Pickups are the #1 determinant as to the sound of an instrument, pre-amplifier.
    I’ve owned around 30-40 guitars and have worked for renowned guitar and audio brands for decades. We’ve run detailed tests that most people will never do. Much of the ‘lore’ and popular wisdom is nonsense and folklore based upon repeated retelling with no primary sources.
    I still own 18 guitars and have reduced the collection to 2 Jazzmasters (a Lee Ranaldo w/Novak CuNiFe pickups and a TVL w/Staytrem parts) along with an Eric Clapton Strat (does pretty much everything). Those three guitars sound very different to each other and the rest of guitars in my collections are oddballs, acoustics, etc.
    Again, whichever instruments grabs your attention and inspires you to play is the one (or are the ones…) to own.

    Since this is your OG video and you asked for feedback, I'll cut right to the chase. First, your demeanor is great and so is your style and you clearly have guitar chops which is a huge step in the right direction. You'll want to try to optimize your lighting so that people can clearly see the parts of the guitar, notably it's a tad hard to read your headstocks. A lot of times when you're doing a comparison video, it's to help someone decide what to buy. In other words, you're not really helping someone decide that they want a Jazzmaster or a Stratocaster here. I would say this is more of a pickup video comparison for the following reasons: When I've seen these videos in the past, they're generally caveated when the guitar is not original. There's also a full description of the specs of each guitar. You've got two guitars here that are basically unattainable by the viewer in the state that you have them, so with all of the quality that you're putting into these videos, the audience is potentially limited unless you're caveating how your non-standard neck choices affect the tone and playability of the guitars OR you're focused more on the things that someone can do to modify their guitars. Am I saying this is a bad video? Oh no. It's really enjoyable. I'm suggesting that thinking about how you are packaging these videos differently will expose you to a wider audience. And let's face it, you are good enough to be seen by a wider audience. Take care!

      Hi Mike! Thank you for watching and for taking the time to write such detailed feedback, really appreciate it! I think you’re probably on to something with the unattainability of the exact guitars. I really wanted to make a video of this type but unfortunately I don’t own a completely stock strat or jazzmaster but they would certainly make for a more general comparison! As you say I might need to tailor my videos more to the guitars im using. And again, completely agree with the lighting, it was an issue that I only realised in editing after I’d filmed the whole thing, I think my more recent videos are slightly better in that regard!
      Anyway, thanks again for the feedback! :)
