Extremely Low Landing at St Maarten Princess Juliana Airport- American Airlines A319

- During a Caribbean cruise in February 2017, one of the ports of call was at Philipsburg, St Maarten. This of course meant we had to make a trip to the world famous Maho Beach at the threshold of the runway at St Maarten Princess Juliana Airport.
What an amazing location it is! It is a true experience! We arrived shortly before 10am and stayed the whole day until just after 4pm. Although there were two periods of rain during the day, the weather was mostly very sunny and bright, perfect conditions for spotting.
Due to 7 cruise ships being in port on the day of our visit (22nd February) the beach was extremely busy. Luckily arriving early meant that we secured some seats and a good spotting location on the beach.
Around 14:00 American airlines flight AA518 from Philadelphia established on approach for runway 10. As the airbus a319 approached i noticed he was quite a bit lower than other aircraft had been throughout the day and it was soon clear that this pilot was out to impress and that his approach altitude was lower than usual.
As you can see in the video the aircraft then passed ridiculously close to the beach at a scarily, but awesome altitude which was truly amazing.
The aircraft was just feet above the beach and was a great sight for all beach goers watching from underneath.
Around an hour later the A319 taxied to runway 28 where he started his takeoff role. Although not as low as his landing the pilot again left his rotation late and held it to stay low as he passed over us on the beach.

"Extremely low landing". As a 37 year commercial pilot, it has been my experience that all landings are conducted at extremely low altitudes.

I think it means that it's an extremely low landing over a crowded public place. The planes are so low over that beach that I could totally see someone there jumping up and being able to touch it as passing overhead.

The trick is to stall the plane just at the surface of the runway.
@@rjnolesRU NOT recommended. Any type of stall results in the loss of control. Watch some videos of military aircraft landing on aircraft carriers and the first thing you notice is just before the landing flair, they apply FULL power in case their tailhook does not engage the cable which is designed to slow the aircraft down to a complete stop.
That gave me goosebumps. I love aircrafts, and this spot is definitely on my bucket list!

How many ft is that from the road to the bottom tip of the rear gear? 15ft? I’d like to see these landing videos ranked from the lowest. This is definitely one of the lowest, but I think there’s an MD80 landing that’s about 12ft
Not that I know it all but it looked like his elevation was closer to 100 feet. Still....wow!
Not really because he's not over the beach very long.
if he's at 20 ft over the beach, he's going to crash short of the runway. he should be at about 50' over the runway threshold (zebra).
I can watch this video a hundred times and still be amazed by it!!!

OTR trucker here: Several years ago I delivered a load of pipe to one end of the STL Airport while in full operation. I saw first hand many overhead landings such as this, but not THAT low. It still was a complete rush.

@@rogerioaraujo5001 this plane is an Airbus A319. I think it's somewhere around the same size as a Boeing 737-200.

This just sends chills down my spine!! My husband served in the Navy on an aircraft carrier and he told me , how he'd get an adrenaline rush Everytime a fighter jet took off or landed... Now I understand it. The ultimate thrill !!! One of my favorite movies was Top Gun and I could almost hear the song 'Danger Zone' playing as this plane sped by. What made it even more special, is that the A319 is one of my favorite planes. These " baby" airplanes are so small but they sure can roar !!! 💥 ⚡✈️😊

Kind of amazing that they have an actual open beach right in the flight path like that. Even if the country is crazy, you'd think that major airlines like American would tell them "We're not flying into that airport if you don't close off that beach."

Having just visited St Maarten about a month ago, All plane landings are this low because of the very short runway. Maho Beach was absolutely fun ! Can't wait to go back ! We stayed at the Sonesta Resort.

Of all the videos I've seen of take offs and landings at SXM, I've never seen a take off to the west over Maho Beach. They are usually to the east and the mountains.
Imagin you're in the cockpit and you're hearing "50, 40, 30" while still being on top of water
