    If you're ready to start riding motorcycles and you're thinking a 125cc bike like a Grom is the best beginner bike to start on... then Chase is about to ruin that for you. Don't worry, though. While a 125cc bike might not be the best choice to start with, we have a few options that we think will take you further down your motorcycle journey.

    My only current transportation is a 2024 Grom. I had plenty of previous riding experience, so it made perfect sense for me as a city bike here in Houston. Getting 126 mpg while only having a 4 mile ride to work is fantastic. Of course, if you need to get on the highway, it would be something that I would reconsider, but if you're in the city, its great.

    If you're a beginner, and you're getting into the situations where the power of a 125 is lacking, you're doing something substantially wrong.
    The point here is to learn how to ride, not get stuck behind a semi on the highway or being in the most left lane of the Autobahn.

    • @Daniel-dj7fh
      @Daniel-dj7fh 22 дні тому +2

      And since it's so slow, and you exist in a whole different time dimension on these, you have the time to observe all the little things to learn to pre avoid getting into bad situations.

    A 125cc bike has it place, especially in the UK.
    125cc is max limit after passing the basic training.
    We are not allowed to ride anything bigger until we pass the full test.
    So learning on a 125, whilst you prep for the test, works for several folks.
    I owned a 125cc for 6mths, whilst I was getting through the test.
    Once I passed, then I was able to get a bigger bike, and I opted for a 600cc.

    He is 100% correct. I bought my 125cc not for my first bike but because my car died. I didn't want a payment and could swing $3000 cash no problem. I outgrew it in a month and was yearning for more power by the second week. Since it's all I got right now if I want some fun I take it on super twisty roads . If I could do it over I'd put the 3k down on a bigger bike. If you buy one you had better have your ego in check. People will mess with you and there's not a lot you can do. It's the most fun I've ever had on the road though and I'm really glad I bought it.

    at 61 years old I have pretty much given up on finding a reliable used car / truck / van / SUV etc...I am now considering getting my Class - M and buying a Honda ADV 150-160 to start with. I am only willing to spend $3,000 - $5,000 on a used vehicle, so why not spend that amount on a "new" vehicle ( Scooter ) that will be extremely reliable?? I travel 3.5 miles each day to work ( taxi / walk ) I just need something to get me around town to do errands and ride 5-10 miles outside of town to play disc golf at one of the local courses. If I wanna take a road trip I can stay on backroads where the speed limit is 45-55 mph and wear the correct protective gear. besides that, God help me + protect me

    I started on an MT07 for a reason. I trusted myself to take it slow, serious, and keep within my limits while I learned. It isn't about thrills and adrenaline for me. It is about cruising, freedom, and adventure on a badass machine with some actual power. I wanted to grow into the bikes abilities rather than start so small and have no option but to buy a new bike. This has worked really well so far. I would have started on an MT09 if my budget had be right and wife willing hahah!

    I started riding dirtbikes as a kid on the farm to round up cattle on the hills that we couldn't get to on 4wheelers. I then went quite awhile with no access or money for a bike. Took the riding course to fast track my license and blow the dust off my riding skills. I bought a used Honda vtx1300 (I'm a bigger guy.) I loved that motorcycle and quickly bought a 600cc sport bike. Years later I had to sell both for the money. Now I commute on a modded Indian Scout 60 and have a cheap enduro for taking out to the farms. There's definitely something to not starting on something too small. Find a bike that fits you well and enjoy the ride

    I learned how to ride and got my M1 on a z125 and I’m looking to get a real bike. Because of where I live, I have to do a lot of highway riding to get almost anywhere, so I’m looking at a 650 so I don’t have to put too much stress on a 400 engine. Is that a good starting point?

  • @lexdfox

    Even though my first street bike is a 125cc, I agree because the characteristics don't lend themselves to anything larger. You can wail on the throttle at any speed and doing the same on something 300 and up you'll loop out.
    If your riding is strictly city though, it's still awesome, like the funner version of a scooter.

    I'm eyeing a 125cc because of 1, yes price 2, just commuting only a few miles no highway 3, it will not let me speed so no tickets with all that said I will get a bigger engine bike later maybe a 500cc. Also I don't understand the buy and sell mind set only riding a bike for a few years is it cheaper or something feel like I'm missing something maybe I'll figure it out one day lol

    OC: Nearly 15 years ago I started on a Ninja 250 and since then I've not been on anything smaller than a 600cc bike, until I got my Grom. Riding a mini is pure fun, doing all the wheelies and in a pack it's just hilarious hooligan fun. That said I'd never recommend a 125cc bike as a 1st bike. Starting on something like a Ninja 400 will always be the best platform to start on to me. You learn what it takes to ride a motorcycle and you really only need abs as a beginner and the Ninja 400 has it. Plus if you can find one they are going to be a lil cheaper than the new Ninja "500"/450.

    I did this and Chase is correct. I was to intimidated to buy a full size bike so I bought the Z125. And I did out grow it in a month. Once I got a full size bike I had to un learn some bad habits that developed from that little bike. Not enough lower. Everything was full throttle. 125cc are fun, don't get me wrong. But as someone who did license couple years ago and during riders course rode bikes from 125 to 650cc (all 4T 1252T is different animal, all 2T bikes are), I can tell the 125 was the worse tool for learning for me. I was fighting with bike that was stalling often needed a lot of throttle input and control to move thru the course and it was not little wheel mini bike like grom and others. Pleasant experience and the most room for error and for learning I had on 250cc.

    I rode...i practiced and learned the basics.
    But, everyone is different.
    Now, I have the my dream bike...Ibex 800 Explore
    ...though i still have my Papio😊
    My opinion.

    Back in the day, I was always told, not to get anythings smaller then a 500cc so my first bike was a Suzuki GS 500 great first bike IMHO no need (unless it is bc of to days stupid licence rules) to get anything smaller, just don`t start out with a 1000RR that might end you.

    You also don’t have the power to put yourself into bad situations lol (speed kills) the mini bikes are fun to wheelie though!

    Totally agree. 125cc is inadequate in my area at elevation and with hills.

    OC: Cfmoto NK450 was my first bike, but the highway was sketchy on it (people flying by me) so I upgraded.

      The 450NK and 450SS have plenty of power to do a 100+ mph all day long. There is nothing sketchy about taking them on the highway, unless you ride 30 miles per hour. I ride 94-103 miles per hour passing cars. I have never had to hit top end speed doing so.

      @@JessicaSimonson1976 on a perfect day, sure, but with a heavy headwind, nahh.. you aren't doing 90+ it will struggle and push you back down to 70-75. but that is my experience with it. I'm glad you are killing it out there. Keep 2 down!

      That’s surprising I have a 300nk and ride on the highways where speed limit is 70 with no problem I’d think the 450 would be way better

    • @JessicaSimonson1976
      @JessicaSimonson1976 23 дні тому

      @@davidlv I ride upwards of 75-100+ mph sometimes in all weather conditions: rain, snow, hail, ice, heavy winds I haven't experienced anything like that. The 450SS has enough power to take some riders over 130 miles per hour. You need to tuck in when windy, and nail it to about 9500 rpm's and sometimes drop a gear.

    • @davidlv
      @davidlv 23 дні тому

      @@JessicaSimonson1976 well the 450SS has fairings, so that makes sense. you get pretty beat up on the NK in wind. I don't know, I just upgraded and have been fine since. But, yeah they are both great machines and I loved my NK when I had it.

    That's like a starter bike for people not yet allowed to drive on the roads. Not a beginner bike for the roads and highways. I learned to ride as a kid on an old 125 cc 2 stroke off road. Then to an old 360 enduro 2 stroke. Highway speeds was pushing that 360. I did finally get a Buell. I am looking for starter bikes to ride orv trails and 2 tracks with my kids. 250 cc and smaller with low seat heights.
