A song for the Irish (and some other) men who deserted from the US Army during the US invasion of Mexico in 1846, only to resurface in the ranks of the Mexican Army.

When the US army prevailed, these deserters were ceremoniously hanged in gruesome circumstances. The Mexican government at the time described the nature of their deaths as “a cruel and horrible torment, improper in a civilised age and ironic for a people who aspire to the title of illustrious and humane”. A journalist covering the war described the nature of the hangings as a “refinement of cruelty”.
yes, horrible cruelty -- their former comrades were forced to collaborate in the process of hanging john riley and the others. most of the deserters who formed the san patricios were killed in battle, and quite a few of the survivors of the last battle made their way to mexico city, lived long lives, and reputedly had many red-haired babies.

The real irony to me is that executing traitors was common practice everywhere at the time (including Mexico and the U.S.) and still is in many places today.

George Carlin, a well know American of Irish descent once said, "the Irish have a gift with the language. Listen to this beautiful song. He knew what he was talking about. Typical Irish folk song usually about fighting for justice.
I am half Mexican and half Irish American. The historical event that was the St Patrick Batallion is something that really resonates with me. It makes me double proud. This song makes it even more amazing. I also love it when oppressed groups of different backgrounds come together to fight against a common oppressor. They overcame the cultural hegemony that was telling them to hate each other.
I taught my 11th graders (most of them Mexican-Americans), the historical part of the St. Patrick's battalion . None of them knew the story of John Riley. We live in the area where these soldiers formed the battalion and crossed to fight on the Mexican side. The students made shamrocks, decorated the classroom door with Erin Go Bragh and were very proud. I've been retired for 5 years, but I always remember that class. They were very proud of the San Patricios. I remember them because at the end of the school year, some of them came up to me and said "I will always remember your class because I learned something that I didn't know, nobody ever taught me about the San Patricios, and that actually happen HERE, in my hometown."
Im Mexican married to an Irish girl from Wexford we live in Mexico. I wish somebody had given me a heads up about the Irish girls feistyness hahahaha is the celtic blood.

I'm cryin at my Uni library, too moved by the sacrifice of the brave anti-imperialists, who had fled one empire to find themselves in another. Long live the Irish battalion, and long live all those who struggle for freedom.
I’m in Mexico right now and I will make sure to visit every battle site to pay homage to my Irish brothers who valiantly fought alongside my ancestors. From the bottom of my heart…thank you Ireland’s sons. We will never forget.

Not the first time this happens, in the early 1580s as part of an English effort to support the Dutch in its 80-year rebellion against Spain. The Crown was keen to keep Ireland’s best warriors busy in Europe, lest they foment rebellion at home. Somehow en route, the predominately Catholic force pledged its allegiance to the Spanish king and spent the next four years fighting against both the English and the Dutch. For the next 200 years, Spain would employ Irish volunteers for wars in both Europe and the Americas.
Here another event worth of a song: Dating back to the Haitian Revolution, the Polish influence started in the town of Cazale. In 1802, Napoleon added a Polish legion of around 5,200 to the forces sent to Saint-Domingue to fight off the slave rebellion. However, the Poles were told that there was a revolt of prisoners in Saint-Domingue. Upon arrival and the first fights, the Polish platoon soon discovered that what was actually taking place in the colony was a rebellion of slaves fighting off their French masters for their freedom.[1] During this time, there was a familiar situation going on back in their homeland as these Polish soldiers were fighting for their liberty from the occupying forces of Russia, Prussia and Austria that began in 1772. Many Poles believed that if they fought for France, Bonaparte would reward them by restoring Polish independence, which had been ended with the Third Partition of Poland in 1795.[4] As hopeful as the Haitians, many Poles were seeking union amongst themselves to win back their freedom and independence by organizing an uprising.[1] As a result, many Polish soldiers admired their opponents, to eventually turn on the French army and join the Haitian slaves. Władysław Franciszek Jabłonowski, who was half-black, was one of the Polish generals at that time. Polish soldiers participated in the Haitian revolution of 1804, contributing to the establishment of the world's first free black republic and the first independent Caribbean state.[1] After Haiti gained its independence, the Poles acquired Haitian citizenship for their loyalty and support in overthrowing the French colonialists, and were called "black" by the Haitian constitution.[5]

Forever grateful. I grew up in the barrio around the place where the final stand of "El Batallón de San Patricio" took place. It is now called "el Museo Nacional de las Interverciones", the national museum of interventions. I even have photos as a 5 years old mounted on the cannons that defended Churubusco. All the streets around are named cause of the Battle: "Heroes of 47" (the year), 20 of August (the day), Gral. Anaya (the Mexican commander) and without doubt "Irish Martyrs". This is the little bit of mexican History that I've always felt belongs to all us, but to me in particular. Walking to the Subway all my middle and high school I've always felt proud of those who came to die for us when they felt it was the right thing to do.

The real irony to me is that executing traitors was common practice everywhere at the time (including Mexico and the U.S.) and still is in many places today.

HAY QUE POBLAR LA PATAGONIA
BIENVENIDOS
Long live for "The Saint Patrick's Battalion"... ERIN GO BRAGH...Greetings from Mexico City.
i hope to see you sometime in mexico city! i spent one week there in the fall of 2006. i completely fell in love with that city, but haven't managed to get back there since...
+CrisipodeSoli you are welcome!
I'm mexican and when I knew the history of the St. Patrick Batallion I cried, I recovered the faith in the humanity.
Viva México! 🇲🇽 Viva Irlanda 🇮🇪!
George Carlin, a well know American of Irish descent once said, "the Irish have a gift with the language. Listen to this beautiful song. He knew what he was talking about. Typical Irish folk song usually about fighting for justice.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. If there is reincarnation, I was there, and I fought on the Mexican side.
I feel the very same way.
Beautiful story
Viva Mexico. Erin go Brath.

Sending love to my Mexican brothers and sisters from Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤️ 🇲🇽

I can't listen to this song with crying. I don't think any other song has had this powerful of an effect on me.
Many years have gone since that cruel and injust war! But, for us Mexicans and the people that recognizes rigth from wrong; the St Patrick's Battalion men were heroes! We will be always in debt with Ireland and its people... Long live St Patrick's Battalion!
Yes sir. "Overwhelmed" by public serpents now :(
Heroes, every last one of them.
Hi, from a Celt in Australia!
Viva Irlanda !!!
God bless the Irish. We’ll always stand by you guys. Brothers for life. 🇲🇽🇮🇪
As an irishman this genuinely fills my heart. From Dublin City to San Diego! Best part is reading the comments and realising that historical bonds still run deep in both countries! ❤ Viva Mexico agus Erin go bragh 🇮🇪🇲🇽
Here another event worth of a song:
Dating back to the Haitian Revolution, the Polish influence started in the town of Cazale. In 1802, Napoleon added a Polish legion of around 5,200 to the forces sent to Saint-Domingue to fight off the slave rebellion. However, the Poles were told that there was a revolt of prisoners in Saint-Domingue. Upon arrival and the first fights, the Polish platoon soon discovered that what was actually taking place in the colony was a rebellion of slaves fighting off their French masters for their freedom.[1]
During this time, there was a familiar situation going on back in their homeland as these Polish soldiers were fighting for their liberty from the occupying forces of Russia, Prussia and Austria that began in 1772. Many Poles believed that if they fought for France, Bonaparte would reward them by restoring Polish independence, which had been ended with the Third Partition of Poland in 1795.[4] As hopeful as the Haitians, many Poles were seeking union amongst themselves to win back their freedom and independence by organizing an uprising.[1]
As a result, many Polish soldiers admired their opponents, to eventually turn on the French army and join the Haitian slaves. Władysław Franciszek Jabłonowski, who was half-black, was one of the Polish generals at that time. Polish soldiers participated in the Haitian revolution of 1804, contributing to the establishment of the world's first free black republic and the first independent Caribbean state.[1]
After Haiti gained its independence, the Poles acquired Haitian citizenship for their loyalty and support in overthrowing the French colonialists, and were called "black" by the Haitian constitution.[5]
this song made me cry really it moves me that even knowing that it was a war they couldn't win they decided to fight for what they believed thanks Ireland for having such brave sons, St Patrice Battalion for your sacrifice, in my country you always be heroes we are very proud of you and very grateful, i always tell the youngest how a group of mostly Irish and Germans fought an died with us that day. we love you RIP 12 /09/1848

Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragán, commonly known as Saúl Álvarez, or by his nickname "Canelo" Álvarez, is a Mexican professional boxer who had an ancestor who was a member of the st.patricks! Google image if not familiar with his looks and he looks very irish if there is such a thing! It's believed he got into boxing after being bullied at school for his red hair and pale skin! #Fightingirish

Thank you brave Irish sons. You saw injustice and you acted.
"Among the Oppressed Solidarity is born", the Irish saw a People that was subjected to an Imperialist War, and joined the Losers, the greatest act of selflessness possible
Se beautiful song. So beautiful story. Now I understand that interesting bond and respect between Mexicans and Irish. I remember Connor Mcgregor making references of “fighting like a Mexican”. David Rovic I listen this song every year close to saint patricks day.
We Mexicans remember the Heroic Battalion of San Patricio, martyrs in the unjust war against the United States, and who gave their lives for our country. Every inch of Mexican soil is also Irish soil. They will never be forgotten. Thanks. Long live Mexico! Long live Ireland! ¡Viva México! ¡Viva Irlanda!

This song brings me tears because i believe that we won't see heroes with values that brings honor to Irish and Mexican people. "A soldier in every son of god" mexican anthem.

Martyrdom is a bitter consolation prize but it is better a martyr for a good cause than conquering hero for a monstrous one.
My mother is part Irish...it is believed her ancestors are from the San Patricios. Thank you for this song. It brings me great joy to hear about my history.
Always do what is right, for there is far greater honor in loyalty to morality than then there is in honoring oaths of loyalty.
Always thankful, those men might have been among the very best mexicans we ever had, even if they were not born here.

Beautiful description of the place, I need to visit!
I had the pleasure of hearing you live in Hanlons Dublin Friday 3 of November without question the best gig I've been to! Such a passionate song of freedom fighters may they Rest in Peace.

I wipe a tiny tear. It's touching, I'm so thankful for your song.
My opinion on America has taken a hit after finding out about this war. It was a pleasure and an honour to find out that my countrymen deserted those imperalist, expansionist scum in favour of Mexico. Éirinn go Brách.
