5-Minute Modification To Reduce Mower Deck Clogging

  • If you have a commercial mower and side discharge, removing this baffle will improve cut quality and performance. Best of all, it should take less than 5 minutes!
    Thanks to another video I saw on UA-cam, I learned an awesome tip that has made my BOB-CAT QuickCat 36" process grass clippings (especially tall and/or wet grass) much easier. This means I can go a little faster when cutting in difficult situations as well as disperse the grass farther, more evenly, and help reduce clogging on the underside of the deck.
    After having the BOB-CAT QuickCat 48" demo for a few weeks, and after a particularly tall, wet, nasty yard that made me wish the baffle was off, I decided to do the same thing to the demo mower.

    Exactly. Let that grass flow out of that deck! Thanks to Randy for the original idea. Mine is still removed.

    I've tried this a few times, always put it back on. It helps reduce pulling clippings and air back into the deck. It's an anti vortex baffle. I notice better discharge with it in place on older Advantage decks, and Duranax decks.
    However, removing it from that Bobcat opens up the discharge area. It doesn't affect the discharge opening on the Duramax or Advantage decks. I may try it on my 36 Bobcat...

    I went through all of the comments, and I'm baffled by the baffle remarks. To my knowledge I've never had a removable baffle on any mower I've owned. I'm an individual user (Not commercial). Most of my mowers were in the 21inch cut range, until I purchased a two blade 33inch cut. I'm diligent about maintenance, and am very familiar with the underside of every mower I've ever owned, and none of them had baffles. With the 33inch mower I have had to bungee the discharge chute open, and also try to plan to mow when theres a 10mph breeze to help scatter the trimmings. I spray my deck at the end of the season with a mower deck protectant, and I do not have any buildup, or clumps whether I'm mowing damp or dry grass. This past year was a fairly average year, and I did have to mow a few times when the grass was pretty wet, but I only hosed the deck off once, and that was only because I had to pull a blade after catching a stone and nicking it up. I figured I might as well clean it while I had it tilted up, even though it didn't really need it

      @@richardspropertymaintenanc5807 just so you don't mis understand me. I usually run mulch kits with baffles. The mulch kit requires you to remove the turbo baffle so, when I removed the kit the turbo baffle was already gone. I removed the kit because the southern turf we mow was just to much for the close baffle kit. So, we have been side discharging with the same blades but, no block off plate and no baffles. Yes, it's been cutting great. I just released a video on my channel comparing a Scag and ExMark cutting abilities.

    This actually reminds me of the TroyBilt TB 100 that I use at work. The inside of the deck is a complete circle with no flow obstruction aside from the chute blocker..so, even when I am mowing wet grass, I can mulch with minimal clumping.

    Airflow in the deck is key, putting more material into it than it can handle and still move the air required to shoot the clippings out, is like putting a golf ball into a vacuum cleaner hose.
    Slow down to a crawl in order to allow the fins on the blades time to move enough air to spread out the clippings.
    Pro tip 101!

  • @spencer8766
    @spencer8766 4 роки тому +6

    This little baffle actually helps the discharge action and reduces the amount of grass that can recirculate back into the deck. It also helps with the airflow of the deck and allows for a better vaccumn to stand the grass up at the back of the deck. There are a few companies that sell different profile baffles for different purposes. You may want to check those out.

    I have a Husqvarna GT52XLS with a 52" fab deck that I'm about ready to trade in because of a buildup and clogging issue that I've had with it from day one. The grass buildup is actually on the opposite side of the discharge. It's (from sitting in the seat) on the left side of the mower. It collects and builds up and clogs primarily on that side of the deck more than other spots. It's my first mower with a fab deck and I have to scrape the deck out every time I use it.
    All my other mowers with a stamped deck never had that issue.
    I've tried a couple of different types of blades. The factory blades and some mulching blades. But just cannot seem to get this buildup issue resolved. Had this mower about 5 years now and to avoid using this mower, I keep limping along my old troybilt XP horse because I hate having to scrape the deck on the Husq every time I use it.
    For those of y'all that have also dealt with this issue, what did you do to fix this issue?

      I am not sure! Randy said the baffle is better for bagging, I don't know if it just acts like a metering device and keeps the discharge chute from getting so much through it is blocks completely or what. Might have to experiment!

    • @pementerprises7706
      @pementerprises7706 2 роки тому

      Take it out when bagging for a larger proportion of clipping toward the front of the discharge and smaller clipping size exiting the deck as both will help when filling a bagger. Leave it in when normally side discharging…

    I don't want to start an argument but since I have not seen anyone say it yet I will. That is a guard that is suppose to work in conjunction with the discharge chute to reduce your chance of throwing objects like rocks. It is a common misconception because a lot of mower manuals having you installing something similar and they are required if you plan to bag because it obviously helps guide the debris into the bag/vacuum.
    Specifically, when you hit or suck up a rock (or other object) the way that it gets launched with the potential to do the most damage is when the rock gets above the mower blades. Which also frequently happens because of the vacuum and it bouncing around. Then the last blade before the discharge is the one that will throw it into someones car or through their window. If you look your discharge blade barley clears this guard. So it greatly reduces the chance that you will launch a dangerous object. I know 100% that I have picked up rocks on customers properties and it has stopped them from being launched. I know this because I hear them hit it (you guys may have too without thinking about it) and mine is actually pretty bent up lol. So it has probably saved me more than once.
    Having that said, it will obviously reduce your deck clogging up. Just as it has been mentioned in this video it is where grass clippings always begin to build up and that buildup just starts spreading to the rest of the deck. I removed my discharge chute a long time ago to replace it with a blocker I could open and close it like many people around here already have. I get so sick of scraping my deck out, especially this time of year when the grass is thick. We also live next to the Shenandoah River so we have a lot of loose rocks all over properties around here. Just people should be aware of the risk.

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.
