Mr Devasagayam, I would like to differ with you, you are not correct. Mr Umashankar is an Indian citizen before his capacity as an IAS officer. Hence he is fully entitled to all protection of the provisions of Article 19 & 25 that enables you and me and Mr Umashankar to preach, practice and propogate one's faith. MR UMASHANKAR DID NOT PREACH IN A PUBLIC MEETING. HE PREACHES IN CHURCHES AND SO HE IS FULLY ENTITLED ALL HIS RIGHTS.

Mr Devasagayam... Since you said that you are a DEVOTED CHRISTIAN, I would reference few verses from Bible for you to read and understand it better. James 5:9, James 4:11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another.
1) First you need to understand that JESUS is not a Religion. Jesus teachings are purely based on "Love your neighbors as yourself." Wouldn't the world be a better place if everyone follows this? And its everyone's job to follow and propagate this.
2) In Mark 16:15 - Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. This is the command Jesus gave it to all the followers. You are not doing that, but you are opposing the one who is doing that which is not acceptable at all.
3) Everyone has personal time, choices, preferences & rights, even for the president of USA or Indian PM. If you think that Gov officials should not have any personal then why you had family & kids? You should have stayed inside your office 24x7.
4) Matthew 25:40 says, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. You gave this interview against the servant of God but Bible says that you gave this interview against God of Heaven and earth. You and I are nothing before the Creator. Few instances of the earlier destruction's for you to refer and repent. Luke 17:32, ACT 5:5 & ACT 5:10.
You should publicly regret for this interview or else you are accumulating coal of fire in your head and the word of God will Judge you. We cannot be a Christian if we go to church or know about Bible. DEVOTED CHRISTIAN doesn't mean a TRUE JESUS FOLLOWER. by this attempts of forcible preaching by such people like Umasankar, you guys are creating irritation on christianity and its followers. +Christopher Jesudason Giving a book as an ancient piece of indigenous literature is NOT conversion effort nor Modi is misusing his position to put pressure on Obama. Obama is in more powerful position and hence no abuse of power here.
On the other hand, IAS officer using his position of power to preach one religion over other to common people who are NOT in position of power and are under his power is abuse of his position as a govt officer. Hence IAS officer is wrong andmust be removed. No govt official should be allowed to preach or propagate any religion. If he does, he should be thrown out of position.
1) Jesus said "Love your neighbors as yourself", but I have a clear sense of morality, so I don't require Jesus. I already love my neighbours. You need crutches if you limp. I'm perfectly healthy. My actions are guided by my ethical framework, because I believe in myself and my sense of ethics and I respect most others' beliefs. It is when others' sense of ethics disrupts the societal construct, I would fight. And your's does.
2) Depending on the depth of your faith, and the distortion of ethics it brings, it might be acceptable or not, to you. But to the majority of the world, professing faith to a group of unsuspecting students who were gathered to listen to a speech on "FORMULA FOR SUCCESS IN LIFE AND CAREER" by an esteemed Government IAS officer is unethical. Had it been said beforehand that he is going to preach, people would not have been offended so much.
3) I actually differ from Devasagayam in this point. I AGREE with you. But he could have used it to preach his religion to people who are willing, but not disguising his preaching into some speech with a innocuous looking title, to which anyone would go. He could do whatever he wants in his free time, but without hurting others. He should have the same respect for others' beliefs what he wants others to have for his.
4) I don't believe in Jesus, so I couldn't care less. But if I say Vishnu would send you to hell if you profess Christianity, how would your reaction be. I have the same reaction to whatever you said in your point 4.

UMA Shankar IAS is a Man of Almighty God. God will lift him up to a highest position in the Indian Government to the level of a Union Cabinet Minister. You are giving a flimsy reason. Who will monitor the situation whether they were forced or came willingly? A church may use the power of the govt officer and arm twist people to attend church services. Schools under the control of churches do force its pupils to attend church services. Similarly as a govt officer he or those affiliated to him may use force for his religious activities. His words are not enough for others.

Modi giving Obama Gita is NOT preaching effort. It is a gift given to Obama, a foreign dignitary, merely as a piece of ancient Indigenous literature. Besides Modi did NOT try t convert Obama.
Umashankar (ironically a Hindu name) on the other hand is actively preaching as an IAS officer. His position of power can be misused for spreading one religion over other, which is unbecoming for a government officer. Just because he preaches in a church it does NOT become an exception. Churches are centers where conversion efforts goes on and who is to say that non-christians will NOT be invited there. As a government officer, he will in position of power to influence potential converts. Any non-christian in such situation will be under pressure and will lead to lack of trust in a government which allows preaching one religion over others. Hence propagation by IAS officers must be banned, whether in office hours or not. If this man is allowed to preach his religion using his position of power, then one should allow ever other govt officer to preach and propagate his religion. This will lead to chaos in functioning of govt and this IAS officer must be punished for this. Let him resign and do this preaching. Christians who wants this man to be in position of power and do this activity clearly want no secularism.

Any Government Post is 24X7. They are in the Duty all the times. Is it ok to sleep during the duty hours? Is it ok to do private work during the duty hours?
You need to understand the concept of 24X7. They are to attend duty WHEN there is a need without counting the time (8 hours of work per day). This does not restrict to do personal duty and responsibilities. Government works are started with Poojas, During Autha Pooja special poojas are done in all the GOVT. departments. Government officials are going to patha yatra and attending temple worships! Does this not come under the 24X7? Government Job is not Slavery!
Going to church and Preaching violates the law! Wonderful. Allow your conscience to speak Mr. Devasagayam. You may have aversion towards independent churches. This is not the way to show and moreover this is not the time to Show.
