As an acoustic purist, I normally can't stand electronic music (despite the necessity in large groups and concert halls like this) but I do feel Al Di Meola's use of the synth is fairly tasteful, as far as these things go.
I think the synth thing is because this material he is playing is years old so he needs to give it a new lease of life or variety or whatever you want to call it. Awider audience? or something like that.
totally agree. I saw him in NYC a few years ago and he would NOT turn that damn thing off. I wanted to jump on stage and rip it off his guitar, pure lighter fluid on it and then burn it like Hendrix.

Respect your opinion but I think he uses the midi Roland system in a nice way.
