    The sun never set on the British Empire. But what if it never rose? What if the British didn’t conquer the land they did, particularly in North America. What would we see from this? Here is one scenario.

    The scenario itself is massive and spans all over the globe. Of course that would require 30-40 minutes to do so. So this is kind of an unofficial "Part 1", if people enjoy it, I'll flesh out the scenario more in later videos.

      There would not have been the worldwide industrial revolution because Newcomen only invented the steam engine to pump dry the coal mines that had been ordered by the English King to reduce charcoal usage because the wood was more needed to build Royal Navy ships used for empire building. So everybody in the world would still be living with 15th century technology and lifestyle, and slavery would be universal as this was only banned by the British Empire.

    English isn't the 3rd most spoken, it's the 3rd most spoken when only considering native speakers. When you consider non-native speakers English is actually the most spoken language.
    The two languages above it, "Chinese" and Spanish, don't have all that much non-native support. (Chinese in quotes because the stats sites combine all the different Chinese languages, but that's a complicated matter better left up to language experts like Xidnaf)

Sure its not big like Africa or Greenland but its not so small that you can walk from one coast to another in a day or two. It would be like walking from Washington state to New Mexico or like walking from Denmark to Venice which would include you walking through the length of Germany, into Austria, then Switzerland and then into Italy. Not a short distance. The greatest distance anyone can travel is 874 miles from JohnO'Groats to Lands End. Britain also has 17,819km of coast (11,072.2133 miles)

    At the beginning of the video I was excited since you said you were also considering the Dutch. Yet, you never mention them again. I think you underestimate the potential of the Dutch Provinces, since they too were in constant naval conflict with the English. It took the combined forces of French, English, and the strongest German states to knock them off the podium.
    This isn't just a Dutch person rambling. I love your scenarios to death, but I think you missed a potentially diverse one here.

      They probably would have spread Protestantism as well to their various colonies, and may have taken a greater role in South Asia, Australia and the Eastern seaboard of America. However, sharing a land border with France may have been disadvantageous, as it would have made them vulnerable to invasion. Britain always had the advantage of being separated from the French by the Channel, which allowed them use their navy to make invasion far riskier than it would have been otherwise.

      The Dutch thrived because they managed to abuse the rivalry between Great Britain and France, with a Dutch king on the British throne being the highlight. After that was no longer possible, the inevitable happened with GB kicking the Netherland's ass on the high seas. Sure, the Dutch managed to survive a combined attack from GB and France, but there was no way they could have sustained a lasting war. Without GB as counter weight, the Dutch would either be a French or Spanish province. Also keep in mind the Dutch got help from GB in order to become independent.

      There's a novel about that actually. It's called "Back in the USSA". Also I think there was a very real possibility before the Russian Revolution where the USA could have turned communist. Huge number of the American population in the pre-war period were hard left wing supporters, and that only really changed in the 40s and 50s onwards when the McCarthyist witchhunts started rounding them up if they didn't keep their heads down.

      Don't forget China! Much of the British Empire's success and ambition was caused by (ironically) an insatiable lust for tea. The French weren't as interested in the beverage as us, so they wouldn't have done as much as us or had the economic power we did. The entire shape of the world would have been different, and the worst terrorist attack (Boston) would never have happened, because there'd be no tea to destroy.
      China would never have had an opiate problem, the Caste system might never have happened, and Texas wouldn't exist.
      Also, within France, the revolution might never have succeeded. With legions of soldiers from across the globe, as well as a more powerful economy (even though it wouldn't have been a British Empire economy, it still would have been a stronger one because more people to tax) the French Royals would've had the power to defeat the revolutionaries and the entire shape of the world would have been different.
      This video focuses too much on America, I agree. The implication is that France would just replace Britain everywhere but America, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Cultural differences meant differences in ambition and so the Earth and its history would be completely different. Maybe WW1 wouldn't have happened. Maybe the Allies would've lost. The problem is that British vs French history is so delicate and prone to major butterfly effect, making this a difficult hypothetical timeline. But skipping over that fact seems ignorant and to be honest very America-obsessed, as America is probably one of the least affected nations (and it still would be completely different).

    The British Empire is arguably the most influential empire/culture in human history, the true legacy of which cannot be measured in graphs.
    I will clarify my position as a subjective historian: Influential civilisations in history could be Persian Empires, Roman Empire/Byzantine, Chinese Han Dynasty, Mongol Empire and Spanish Empire all of those Civilisations had huge affects on their vast regional spheres of influence over prolonged periods of time.
    The British Empire/Commonwealth, the first global superpower, later becoming the only Hyperpower in world history - beginning early 16th century with North America and the Caribbean. Reaching its zenith between 1815 & 1922 “Imperial century” & started to collapse in the aftermath of WW2, relinquishing control of Hong Kong in 1997 being viewed as the end of empire.
    • Almost 1/3 of the countries in existence today were formed or founded by the British.
    • Important cities founded or built by the British across the world include New York, Boston, Sydney, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Vancouver, Cape Town, Dublin, Melbourne, Calcutta, New Delhi and London to list a few.
    • Maritime laws, governing all ships at sea regardless of nationality were laid out by the British 200 years ago.
    • Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) also known as Coordinated Universal Time, is still the world’s time standard, meaning all clocks are still set by British time.
    • British legal system (trial by jury) is used by around 25% of the world.
    • Over half the world’s nations use the British democratic system (parliamentary democracy)
    • Sports invented and codified in Britain include Football (most popular sport), Cricket (worlds 2nd most popular), Rugby, Golf, Badminton, Rounders/baseball, Snooker, Tennis etc.
    The Japanese department of Trade and Industry (MITI) launched a massive project to list every item currently used by humans. When the project finished they discovered that 54% of all things used by mankind today across the entire world, were invented or designed by the British, the rest of the world combined made up the other 46% (Japan's share - 5%)
    I will close with the contributions of Edward Jenner the pioneer of smallpox vaccine, the world's first vaccine. His work is said to have "saved more lives than the work of any other human” and Alexander Fleming’s for his discovery of the world's first antibiotic Penicillin.
    *I didn’t even highlight the contributions to Music, Art, Literature or science . Let alone the Industrial revolution, English language or often forgotten Abolition of Slavery - finally ending 3000+ years of human cruelty at its worst.

      Why the unnecessary quotation marks around 'discovered'? If you didn't know something was there, and then you learn about it's existence, you discover it. When I was in London, I discovered a great pub near the Thames. Does that mean that nobody else had ever been there or visited it? No, of course not. The fact that other people (e.g. aboriginal people) may have known about it before the Europeans did doesn't mean that they didn't discover it, since it was unknown to them. If the Aborigines had sailed to Europe, we could say they had discovered Europe (without 'quotation marks'), because it would have been true.

      +That Guy kaiserreich: legacy of the weltkrieg is an alternate history mod for the games Hearts of Iron II, IV and Darkest Hour. It is about Germany winning WWI. basically, France and Britain have fallen to communism, Russia is a weak semi-democratic republic, the US is on the brink of civil war, China is a mess, and Germany is the hegemon of the world. It is a really interesting scenario and incredibly well made.

      Pian You're forgetting that the concept of "Great Britain" that we are used to know wouldn't exist because there would be no isle, so the criteria to define the borders of its territory would be so subjective as the ones we used with France, Germany, Spain, etc. What we know as France, Germany and Scandinavia could be very different or doesn't exist, because it's impossible to know the people that would live in the lands that we call Great Britain since before the Roman Empire

    • @danieljames6138
      @danieljames6138 7 років тому +2

      Brandon Karstark But that's my point, Britain has created its own culture group because it was separated from the rest of the continent. If it wasn't separated then it would be just an extension of where it connected with the main land. The inhabitants course would be drastically altered as there is no see barrier to separate it from the other countries. The British culture group would never have been made of its unique blend of invaders as there would be one overriding group that whose culture would dominate Britain. Wherever the land connection was the Isles would be of their culture.

    • @instaurareomniainchristo5634
      @instaurareomniainchristo5634 7 років тому +2

      Pian Exactly, I only dont think it would be the French and German that would invade Great Britain, because in this scenario these countries wouldn't exist, but probably the Confederation of the Equator would, and would dominate that entire fucking region.

      IskenThink also the fact that a main reason why the Netherlands lost much of their power was because of the rise of power of the United Kingdom. if they would have never been, the only reason for this decay would have been the French. The fact that there would be one major power instead of two would have great impact on the spread of power as their power would not have become so mere.

    • @slice0909
      @slice0909 7 років тому +2

      IskenThink Do you really think tiny netherlands can stand a french invasion by land? The low countries would not be lucky enough to be surrounded by sea, as special little UK was, in a conflict in the scale of the 7yw or the Napoleonic wars. The only reason britain was never razed to the ground was because they could safeguard themselves from huge militaries like Spain, France and Prussia/Germany with their navy. No way a flatland like the Netherlands could compete with the french in the global scenario as england did, they would be defeated as soon as they posed a threat to France's dominance.

    • @beardetmonkey
      @beardetmonkey 7 років тому +4

      slice0909 in the golden age the dutch republic with its vast wealth managed to defeat an alliance of France, England and some German rulers. Granted the war with France took long like 30 years i think, but after the alliance was defeated it was basically a stalemate between France and the republic. If England was out of the mix i highly doubt France could steam roll the dutch.

    • @OfficialJoosty
      @OfficialJoosty 7 років тому +5

      beardetmonkey Yeah exactly not by any means would France steamroll the Dutch but it would definitely win in an attrition war.
      However now that I think of it, why did Spain lose the Eighties Year war when NL was by no means powerful. Mostly because Spain was near bankruptcy because of wars with the Ottomans (I am pretty sure). So maybe in a fictional scenario France (as hegemony) would also be tired of many wars with regional powers. Either way I think this is Alternate History one of its most sloppy episodes clearly overlooking Portugal and the Netherlands or even Scandinavian nations as a potentional regional power.

    Who gives a shit about fur when you can have access to the most expensive stuff (at that time) for free? Spices, gold, diamonds, cotton, maritime trade routes to name a few.

      Zeke Yeager 1. for that to happen it would have to change its entire economy, fast, which wouldve been very vulnerable. so its downfall was inevitable. 2. idk. 3. the allies would be in a worse place strategically for world war 2 and the modern conflicts in the middle east would be different (but still probably happen unless the empires lose the entire middle east before ww2) . 4. the royal navy would be alot more confident and morale would be very high seeings as 2 cruisers alone sunk a collosal battleship. 5. depending on wether the now victorious monarchy opts for fascism then Fascist russia could potentially be in the axis in WW2. Russia in the axis could potentially be a lot less powerfull than the USSR in our timeline depending if they are willing to industrialise because the USSR only industrialised to deal with the German threat but in this alternate timeline russia doesnt industrialise so plays a much smaller role in WW2. WW2 would still result in an allied victory because even if DDAY is a failiure there were british landings about to happen in scandanavia and Britain wouldve still beat Germany to the Atomic bomb. (and to any american fanboys British scientists spearheaded research into the atomic bomb, the only reason it was branded an “american” invention was because research on the device was given over as a scientific deal in the lend lease act)

    Cody, I really enjoy your stuff, and you are really good about most flags and their use, but I do believe you are displaying the Union Jack upside down (on the little British guy at least) to quote our friend Wikipedia, “While the flag appears symmetric, the white lines above and below the diagonal red are different widths. On the side closer to the flagpole (or on the left when depicted on paper), the white lines above the diagonals are wider; on the side farther from the flagpole (or on the right when depicted on paper), the converse is true. Thus, no change will be apparent when rotating the flag 180 degrees, but if mirrored the flag will be upside-down.” As an amateur vexillologist, I had to say something... sorry... Otherwise, awesome job on keeping is informed on the multiverse!

    Your explanation for why France would be the dominant power in stead of Spain kind of assume that both of them go down roughly the same paths and make roughly the same decisions. For example, without Britain, the Spanish Armada doesn't bankrupt spain, and Napoleon doesn't start the wars that would lead to the collapse of the empire.
    This is kind of the problem with your videos, i feel. You try to make these sweeping, massive predictions of what the world would be like, but you don't go anywhere near enough in-depth with actually understanding or explaining why things happened as they did. It's just as possible that, without Britain, we would see a Spanish or Scandinvian or Austrian dominated Europe. Like, you mention New Amsterdam, but without Britain being the power it was, chances are the Dutch probably wouldn't have won their liberation war.
    I do still like your videos, so I hope you take this as the constructive criticism it's meant as. I'm not trying to be a dick, this has just been bothering me.

      Totally Not A Cylon that's what I was thinking too. With Britain out of the picture the whole sequence of historic events would be altered.

      You cant really blame him, he is fundamentally altering a HUGE part of history and guessing at the outcome. In this case he is removing the largest empire in history from ever existing to begin with. This obviously has huge consequences. Also on Napoleon, if the British Empire never existed then the French Revolution likely never would have happened and also the Spanish colonies in South America would have been infinitely more stable. If the French Revolution does not happen, Napoleon never rises to power. EVERYTHING CHANGES. But anyway the point - can you really blame him for not covering much of the fallout when the fallout is so huge?

      Spain had terrible administrative planning, it would have failed if it kept that system of management, which it would have since Britain had nothing to do with the Spanish Empires administrative policy. Spain could have been much more successful and would have lasted decades or even centuries longer if it just copied a French or English system of management. Spain fell because of many reasons, too many to just list, though you can do your own research so I urge you to do so. Austria would have been very similar, as countries such as Prussia, and Russia would still rise, maybe in this history other German states would also rise into power. The Scandinavians would most likely have a very similar amount of power to what they had in real life, as British intervention wasn't too big in Scandinavia compared to the rest of the world. The Dutch may have won if France intervened, which the chances would be very likely considering the only 2 big rivals the French would have would be Spain and Austria, France would want to divert some of their power to get rid of important influence in Holland.

      the Luftwaffe was in state to bomb the UK with al that US and UK airpower. and an German invasion is out of the equation as well. Germany lacked the naval power to fight the combined US and UK naval forces in the area. it would end in a Soviet dominated Europe.

    You should do " what if the Greeks completed there Magali Idea, the reconquest of Greece and western Anatolia in mostly the 19th and early 20th centuries " what would this do to the world today? Would we see a restoration of The Byzantine empire and would we see the Imperial city of Constantinople returned to this new Greek empire and Christianity. I think this topic has a lot potential. Also this would be my favorite of your videos yet. Sorry for the Paragraph.

      The prophecy of Constantine Rising again was entirely set. It seemed coincidental that a Greek King by name of Constantine would retake the city. I wish it had happened, but at the same time, the byzantines wouldn't be as legendary if they rebuilt. Pretty tragic that the prophecy never happened yet

      Not at all. I would love to see that video as well. If you had written yours down in the comments and I saw it I would have liked it as I did this one. Out of the two I might even prefer yours because Reallifelore just came out with a video if the Islamic Empire reunited today which has more similarities to your idea than the Greek one. Why did you assume I was racist?

      Miguel Maestas Because when I see a Greek (or someone) in those videos, they say us those. And we say them the same. I hate it. If it's bad or something for you, sorry. I'd like a Byzantine one too.

    You forgot to mention that slavery would still be common place & accepted today. The British never put a stop to the Atlantic slave trade meaning Africa's Economy (which relied on the trade) wasn't decimated meaning that Africa wouldn't be so easily colonised & would probably be a world power to rival Europe today.

    Wait, the Netherlands didn't have a king untill 1805(which was a relative of napoleon, our first real king ruled from 1815-1839). And we were the dominant power in the 17th Century
