I didn't know this was from the creator of Strider after he left Capcom on very very bad terms. Kouichi Yotsui deserves to take on bigger titles as he is an ambitious game designer.
So instead of holding their karate tournament at the local community college, they hold it, inside an active volcano, or all these other surreal locations. Must save on renting the space.
+apocalypserik Actually, that's the referee saying "Waza-ari", which is a half-point in Karate matches. He curiously never says "Ippon", which is a full point.
Gridseeker I may have heard that as well. The thing is that if it was "atari", it'd be spoken very quickly as a word, whereas I heard the referee say "Waza-ari" with an "ss" sounding syllable and a vowel extended just long enough. It didn't sound like the sound hardware was so bad that a "tt" syllable would've been garbled by excessive bitcrushing or poor programming.
I always felt the controls in this game were weird as hell, not to mention very difficult to master. As far as the graphics go, they are a pleasure to look at, although the science-fiction/fantasy backgrounds feel out of place in contrast to the remote Asian locales in my humble opinion. Hey, does anyone know if this and Osman/Cannon Dancer are the only games Mitchell Corporation ever made or not?
+Bahiyud-Deen Shaheed Yeah, the animations are pretty impressive and the exaggerated 'smear' or motion blur effect makes them stand out even more... perhaps they've been rotoscoped?
The backgrounds are awesome, but sadly the characters are all the same except with different colors. Also I was REALLY hoping that you faced that ref in the end. That would have been neat. :) still good job.
Just got a old custom arcade and it had this game on it, very impressed by the graphics and the mechanics of it. Super interesting and well thought out “fighter”.
Sensei SCHLAUCHI does it again! also, if you notice well, you can tell the background artists behind this game were the same that worked in Mitchell Corp.'s magnum opus Osman CannonDancer! don't know if Koiji "Isuke" Yosoi had part in this too... I could dig in to find out if you'd like...
+triplestar100 Koichi "Isuke" Yotsui was the designer for The Karate Tournament; "The Fourth Sally" just happened to be one of Isuke's other pseudonyms.
+triplestar100: Funny you should mention the backgrounds, because I thought the futuristic city backgrounds felt out of the place in this game in contrast to the beautiful, traditional, Asian locales. Hell, for all I know, The Karate Tournament and Osman/Cannon Dancer might take place in the same universe.
+Jorge Mateus That would make sense. He had a similar hairstyle to the player character, and the ridiculous kicks are reminiscent of his incredible footwork.
Jorge Mateus He's a LEGEND the whole time he was alive and known in Japan. The man's a Swiss southpaw with silky-smooth leg work that not one person can hope to match even today. Leukemia's a huge bitch in that regard.

Those spin kicks are fucking hysterical.

oh you don't know, that's just how mitchell corp is
This game "feels" like a DOS game from that time. Especially the music.
for example, world karate championship! except the animation is much smoother
More real than SF, Tekken, MK and all those other games .
Spiritual successor to Karate Champ
They seem like nice guys. They say sorry after hitting each other.
It's the lion referee who says that :)
+apocalypserik I thought it sounded like "naughty".
+apocalypserik
Actually, that's the referee saying "Waza-ari", which is a half-point in Karate matches. He curiously never says "Ippon", which is a full point.
+Joshua Madoc I thought the referee said "atari" which means literally "touched" or in this case when the player hits his opponent´s body.
Gridseeker

played this game at the arcade center 1993. finished all 3 level. a really nice graphic back the years
...
Why are you beating the power rangers?
Kudo fighters

They have an entire wikipedia article full of games
@@FIXTREME: I'll have to look it up. Thanks for the info!
Are they saying sorry every time they get hit?
Actually I think they are saying something in japanese
+chibineowing
"Waza-ari", as in a half-point in Karate matches.
where can I play this game for free ?
Then the background at 8:06 happened.. wtf?
Most generic name for a fighting game ever.
SORRY!!
Looks like thst game called Karateka
nice!!!
I find character animations pretty cool!
+Hurley Kane They actually look pretty fluid and smooth
+Bahiyud-Deen Shaheed Yeah, the animations are pretty impressive and the exaggerated 'smear' or motion blur effect makes them stand out even more... perhaps they've been rotoscoped?
+Hurley Kane true that. not as stiff as mortal kombat, but the gameplay has more flow
when did this come out? why am i now hearing about this? i searched karate champ and this came out
This is the first time I heard of this game, but nonetheless as a Kyokushin practitioner, I find this game looking fun to play!
They could probably put this game on the nintendo switch e-shop.
This is a really decent karate game! If you like The Way of the Exploding Fist and IK+ you’ll really like this. That crane kick takes me back 😉
Wow they really went all out on the animations for this.
Even with all that insane variety of opponents, they still managed to surprise me with a final boss!
Yes, they dressed him in green. Green! It blew my mind! Where do they get those awesome ideas?
The backgrounds are awesome, but sadly the characters are all the same except with different colors. Also I was REALLY hoping that you faced that ref in the end. That would have been neat. :) still good job.
+YukoValis Sword: Same here. I would have loved to have seen if the kabuki warrior referee would have used that samurai sword in combat.
They used even more animation "smears" than the later Capcom fighters like Darkstalkers!
This game is addicting as hell when played with two people. BOOYAKAH!!!
Love how it reads as 'Beated' instead of 'Beaten' on the results screen, lol.
+samurizzy: The Engrish is strong in this game.
Just got a old custom arcade and it had this game on it, very impressed by the graphics and the mechanics of it. Super interesting and well thought out “fighter”.
This game should have been called Eric Roberts vs. The Karate Spacemen
The Kudo Spaceman
yhe random michael bay explosion to seem edgy that come out of no where.
It quite looks the opponents are always the same character only changing by colour...🤔
questo gioco non l'ho giocato all'epoca.... Chi sà a che anno risale esattamente.. Bhaa
GRANPA!!!!!
This game is proof that flying jump kicks allows you to teleport to the nearest person who wants to challenge you to karate XD
Pourquoi l'arbitre est un clown dans ce jeu?
BEATED!
Nice Karate Champ reboot!
lolie pop
Great video. Awesome game. Subscribed.
Sensei SCHLAUCHI does it again!

+triplestar100 Some famous paintings were used in the background.
+triplestar100 Koichi "Isuke" Yotsui was the designer for The Karate Tournament; "The Fourth Sally" just happened to be one of Isuke's other pseudonyms.
***** thanx for the info; much appreciated... and Happy Holidays!
The second stage background is Daybreak, by Maxfield Parrish.
+triplestar100: Funny you should mention the backgrounds, because I thought the futuristic city backgrounds felt out of the place in this game in contrast to the beautiful, traditional, Asian locales. Hell, for all I know, The Karate Tournament and Osman/Cannon Dancer might take place in the same universe.
kusoge
Looks like pit fighter , and it sounds like he saying “ Barcardi , Fuckup Bacardi !
Larusso Crane Kick
Never heard of this game till now lol.
+Ron Mower I have never heard of your channel until now :P :D This game is easy, I used to beat everybody at it in the arcade.
Skip Rogers
I never heard of you until Magus mentioned you lol.
4:38 bro did the crane
1994
geez, this guy is so polite! hes never gonna get past white belt like this!
Is the character the player plays as based on Chuck Norris? :O
+Highretrogamelord Probably Andy Hug
+Jorge Mateus
That would make sense. He had a similar hairstyle to the player character, and the ridiculous kicks are reminiscent of his incredible footwork.
And he was very popular by the time in Japan.
Jorge Mateus
He's a LEGEND the whole time he was alive and known in Japan. The man's a Swiss southpaw with silky-smooth leg work that not one person can hope to match even today. Leukemia's a huge bitch in that regard.
Jorge Mateus Hm, you could be right about that.
This game actually seems pretty cool.
Japan language?
Yes
It's a karate fighter against a kudo fighter
This game is _NOT_ a weird, guys!!
Eu nunca ouvi falar sobre esse game
That's some strange looking karate
B E A T E D

What a unique and creative name...
Wax ON? ... *Wax OFF*...
they keep saying "atari" "atari" when hit
game looks alot of fun
Love the music

This is: Mortal Kombat in 2D
+sainttrunks1982 You do know that Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3 were 2D right?
TroutButter
yeah your right, i should have said Comic 2D (like Streetfighter & KOF)
This is terrible. Karate Champ did this SO much better in 1984.
is kudo not karate
