Now I cannot get enough of more knowledge about God and the faith, and I have finally found something that will forever be a well of love and knowledge like I never knew I had been searching for. I got to know you thanks to Dr. Jordan Peterson. I am a Christian in Korea. Korea has serious problems with feminist politics. We see, hear, and communicate these issues frequently in the world, but I think Korea is also a country with very serious problems worldwide. In addition, the contradiction of the judicial system, the problem that men are not protected even if they become unfair criminals, false reports in education and the media, and false interpretation of statistics are serious political incitement. And because the politically-biased middle-age generation (to protect democratic politics) is so advocate for this issue, it has become a bigger mainstream, and many churches are prioritizing their teachings over the Bible. Many young men and women (especially men) are struggling. This is a huge barrier to entering the church. So please add more Korean subtitles to your videos in the future. It will help us a lot. thank you.

It would seem that Abraham knew (or had faith) that his son Isaac would not actually die, evident when he said to his servants “we will worship and come back to you” and he answered Isaac that “God himself will provide the sheep for Holocaust.”
If Abraham is my 'Father in faith' I always pictured an old saintly man setting out the journey (I happened to be a character too simple) with a head so full of the 'ritual' that lay ahead and a heavy heart so wrenched with pain. Even now I think that Abraham, in both the instances was not answering but 'putting together words that would sound normal in face of the queries. *Having faith in GOD cancels ANYTHING that GOD MIGHT DO or WON'T DO but fills one's attitude with 'GOD KNOWS BEST and I AM WILLING TO GIVE ALL'* (this is just me.) Listening to Bishop and Brandon has been great comfort, just to give some room for thinking that it wasn't that bad after all.
My understanding of Christ sacrifice is the correction on God's part of the covenant-- Basically, saying 'I screed up! Not you" I take responsibility for the fall, the entry of sin, the wound, the accident whatever you want to call the incident where there was a 'virus' that entered perfection. This trope about humans disobeying does harm at a soul level. Putting it on us. We respond certainly to the call. But we cannot take the fall for the FALL. That's a burden we were never meant to bear.
We in our urban environment don't appreciate the number of stars. Go to the wilderness, high on a mountain, or in a desert away from lights, and you will see a true panorama of stars, not dimmed by our own lights... That's what Abraham would have seen...

I am a fervent believer in God , in Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. However, I have a question about Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moraya. Could Abraham have taken Isaac to Mount Moraya for a burnt offering if God didn't bestow so many favors onto Abraham first? In other words, if our Lord God's first "meeting request" of Abraham was: sacrifice your son Isaac to me in a burnt offering, would Abraham have followed our Lord God's request?
Abraham and Isaac, seems a foreshadowing of worse to come for a parent. As a human parent, and a Christian, I can go right up to the chopping block, but then I stop , and I would start asking a lot of questions and have alternative suggestions… the wrestling with God or his angels…describes me. I understand the why part, the faith part…. There is a beautiful song, Mary, did you know…? That’s what I would like to know.

I hope Bishop Barron doesn't miss doing an episode on the father of the Arabs Ishmael in this series. Even Josephus referred to the Arabs as Ishmaelites. I’m beginning to feel proud of my Catholic heritage once more.
I was also a lapsed Catholic. I went to confession after eighteen years and it was the best thing I was ever called to do. The first thing that the priest said after I told him how long it had been was to tell me “welcome home.” There’s always a home for you in the body of Christ.

The explanation given regarding Abraham sacrificing Isaac is thought provoking and beautiful. My take on the story never included the possibility that a sacrifice would occur. I read it as God drawing the line in the sand. I assumed, (yes, I know what’s said about assuming) that human sacrifice wasn’t necessarily an uncommon occurrence among the various tribes who worshipped a number of deities in that part of the world. Again, I assumed that Abraham‘s tribe, prior to the covenant, practiced a pagan religion not unlike that of other tribes. I seem to remember that each tribe worshiped different gods, and it wasn’t particularly uncommon to see human sacrifice being practiced. The Abraham/Isaac story seemed to show God telling his people that He didn’t want or require human sacrifice. And again, I assumed the God of Abraham wanted to demonstrate just how different he was, so different that he revealed to Abraham that no god existed but Him. Human sacrifice was now a thing of the past, and was not required to love and trust him. I suppose I couldn’t conceive that the lesson God wanted to deliver, could have ended in human sacrifice as a way to appease him. I considered the sacrifice that Jesus made, as God sacrificing himself, not as an appeasement to an angry god who demands blood and fear as entertainment, but as a demonstration of his love for humanity. Even today I find it difficult to understand the deeper meaning associated with sacrifice. Perhaps, in the ancient world the image and meaning associated with sacrifice, whether human or animal, held a significance in antiquity that is hard to understand today. If it’s relevant enough, I like to hear you discuss the behind the scenes significance of sacrifice in the ancient world. And how or why the crucifixion seemed so relevant to people 2000 years ago. If God had delayed the incarnation 2000 years, It’s hard to imagine anyone would find the image of God being nailed to a cross a compelling reason to take notice. Timing is everything I suppose.

Israelis believe Abraham gave birth to their nation as well as Samaritans who still exist(about 1000) today mostly in Nabulus. I also recommend reading up on a real life good Samaritan Abood Cohen who does a lot of good work to build bridges between peoples. Of course Arabs believe they are descended from Ishmael and even the Baha'is a religion from Persia believe their prophet is connected through Abraham's forgotten third wife Keturah.

@@russellmiles2861 I didn’t understand, but I think I do now. Respectfully, I don’t think morality as it is usually thought of, is possible without God. I’m not a Bible scholar so I can’t comment on your question with anything but a superficial explanation that probably isn’t what you are looking for. Generally speaking, all people from all societies share a surprisingly similar relationship to morality. IE: lying, murder, being fair, etc. Cultures do differ widely, but the core values remain the same. The scripture tells us that his law, his morality and his expectations are written in our hearts. Your comment about seeing within the scriptures a pattern indicating that God blesses those who follow their own ideas about what is good or evil is hard to make. If we are talking about the God of Abraham, there isn’t alternative sets of values or moralities to choose from. We do have free will and we can exercise that powerful gift for good or ill. But what I don’t see in your example is the following: A coherent narrative throughout scripture indicating that God blesses those who: stand up to him, disregard his council and do whatever they think is the right thing to do. Moments in scripture, like the story of Abraham and Isaac, do illustrate that God honors man’s agency. We have a choice. However, the hope, I think is to recognize and honor the greatest possible good- God. The stories seem to show God trying to help his creation, the beings he created in his own image. Which includes all the attributes of God: free will, creativity, intelligence etc. And then learn how to live and appreciate that incredibly important and unimaginably wonderful, powerful and sacred gift. When people choose their own morality and see themselves as not a reflection of his image, but in essence see themselves as the highest good. The whole of world history shows us the results of that move. Men acting like they are God- the obvious results of taking that attitude has given us horrific examples of human suffering. Believers in God, at least the Judeo Christian concept of God, believe that they are reflections or patterns of what He is. The stories we see in scripture when man and God are in the thick of what we think of as troubling examples that bring to bear something as hard to understand as human sacrifice. I think these lessons show us how important it is that we, not God, need to understand what it can mean for humanity, or a single human being to be like him. For example, the mafia has its own sense of morality and guards it with death penalties for those who step out of line. They do operate within a moral framework, but at the bottom, it’s not based upon the highest good, God. It’s based upon the lowest instincts of man, greed, power, etc. So I don’t think that God’s message to us, is to disregard what it means to be good. I wish I could have answered your question at the depth you asked it, but I did all I could do with it. God bless you my friend!

I always appreciate these videos. I do think there’s more going on than simply Abraham’s faith being an example of what is required for personal commitment. Abraham was chosen to start the events that would undo the tragedy of the garden, and begin the whole process of salvation. Would he pass the test? Or would someone else need to be found who would listen and therefore become the father of our faith?
If Faith is trust then what is trust ? What specifically constitute the Faith? Abraham left his Fathers house which was a tribe , did not stay to climb its ladder.
This is a great meditation overall, and I appreciate everything that you do. However, as an old testament scholar, I must disagree that God is asking Abraham to murder his son. God is the author of life, and to him all life belongs. What he is asking Abraham, is to give Isaac back to him. God, as author of life, cannot commit murder. Murder is the unauthorized and deliberate killing of an innocent human being. God is the only one who can authorize the taking of life. This understanding makes sense of a lot of other passages in the Old Testament as well.

The scripture says, “God is not a man that He should lie. Has He ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through?” God has never failed in the past, and He’s not going to start with you. Stay in faith and stay open. It may not happen your way or on your timetable, but God is true to His word. When you’re constantly saying, “God, You promised,” that’s what allows Him to bring promises to pass.
Oh Worshippers of Christ! We’d like your most wise to answer our question. If our God was murdered by some people’s actions, then what sort of God is this? And we wonder. Was he pleased by what they did to him? If so then blessed are they, for they must have achieved his pleasure. But if he wasn’t pleased with them, then this must mean they overpowered him. And how strange is it. That a grave could be enclosed on a god. And even stranger is the womb that enclosed him (before.) Thus, he ate, drank, and after he answered the call which comes naturally. So is this really a god? High Exalted is Allah above the lies of the Christians. Each of whom will be asked about their fabrications. Oh Cross worshippers, for what reason is someone exalted (for accepting this) and blameworthy for rejecting it? And is it not logical that we should break and burn (what humiliated Christ) and the one that made it? Since (you claim) that God was forcefully crucified upon it, with his hands nailed to it. For truly what a cursed cross to carry? Which one should discard instead of kissing when glanced upon. For (you claim) the Creator was abused upon it. Yet you appear to worship it, so are you one of His enemies? For it was the grave that held your (so-called) god in it. Oh worshippers of Christ, Wake up. For this is what the matter is all about. by: Ibn Al-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah. An Islamic Scholar who died in 1350 CE.
I would also suggest. Since Abraham told the other companions that both he and Isaac would return, it may also be an example of Abrahams faith, but even more , his radical trust of God.

You said that God doesn't need anything from us and can therefore just love us. Does this mean that when we freely give our friendship to God, we change him. We confirm to him that indeed we are good. We make him smile, we move him...
On why Abraham would even consider obeying God’s command to do the deed to Isaac: Abraham’s time was different. I believe pagan religions in ancient Mesopotamia practiced human sacrifice. It was not unknown to Abraham. Perhaps Abraham believed God was truly asking it of him and as God, He was well within His right to demand full obedience. But we get insight into Abraham’s feelings when Isaac asked, “We have the wood but where is the victim (to be sacrificed)” to which Abraham responds “God Himself will provide the victim.” I believe that to the very end Abraham expected God to come through for him, to save him from this great pain, and indeed God comes through for him. The ram that was sacrificed instead of Isaac prefigured Jesus, the victim that God provided. Additionally, God already for-knew that Abraham would obey Him so why even put him through the test? I think it is for Abraham’s sake, that he may know himself to be capable of complete and utter obedience to God but also complete trust in the mercy of God.
Oh no, you are misleading here. Abraham was never 'barren'! Only Sarah was barren. Abraham did, in fact, have other sons by other women. Afraid of saying it like it is?

The explanation of the division of Abram's sacrifices, from my book in progress: (Gen 15:1) ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward’. Surely Abram was in great consternation over the results of the battle and feared any future retribution from the northern kingdoms, or possibly even conflict with his now enriched neighbors. Being consoled by the first part of the vision, Abram, lamentably, did not fully comprehend its latter part. Abram was being offered a portion within the eternal rest and bosom of God. The Almighty himself had become his reward and safeguard, but having humility and the things of the world in mind, he questioned the reason for any further reward when he responded, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” So we see the devaluation of the highest promise, reduced to comparison to the gifts of a perishable nature: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir...Look up to the sky and count the stars-if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be.” This time Abram believed God, and this was credited to him as righteousness. Stars in the heavens are much better than dust in the wind. By their light are many lead through dark paths and their years will be many. Yet his offspring have to dwell somewhere, and so he speaks again to complete the promise, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it.” Grace is obviously lost at this point when doubt answers back, “Sovereign Lord, how can I know that I will gain possession of it?” At this point we have the revelation of the future division of the promise. It will not be enjoyed fully, but suffer rupture. What is the heifer (Numbers 19) except the loss of an object just short of its potential, that leaves nothing behind, and the ensuing loss becomes the purifying salve for uncleanness, kept as a reminder. As a leader, Abram must bring the goat (Lev 4:22). For carelessly swearing, the dove and young pigeon (Lev 5:7), because at this point he cannot afford the Lamb. For sinning unintentionally regarding the The Lord’s holy things, the ram (Lev 5:15). Hell is open and the scavengers of the sky make their best effort to defile what is left vulnerable and in the open. Despite his best efforts he’s overcome by exhaustion at twilight and falls into a thick and dreadful sleep, wherefrom God speaks to him directly for the first time, “Know thou beforehand that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land not their own, and they shall bring them under bondage, and afflict them four hundred years. But I will judge the nation which they shall serve, and after this they shall come out with great substance. And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace, and be buried in a good old age. But in the fourth generation they shall return hither: for as yet the iniquities of the Ammorites are not at the full until this present time.” Here you see clearly the reason for each animal and why they were divided.
I grew up fetching water from the Well, where all people in the community converge to get water. Well is a meeting point where older people, when I was a teenager come to look for girls. Water is life and the most important after other things, people must come to get water and you will see all the fine ladies. Am not surprised that people of the ancient world found wives in the well

I got to know you thanks to Dr. Jordan Peterson. I am a Christian in Korea. Korea has serious problems with feminist politics. We see, hear, and communicate these issues frequently in the world, but I think Korea is also a country with very serious problems worldwide. In addition, the contradiction of the judicial system, the problem that men are not protected even if they become unfair criminals, false reports in education and the media, and false interpretation of statistics are serious political incitement. And because the politically-biased middle-age generation (to protect democratic politics) is so advocate for this issue, it has become a bigger mainstream, and many churches are prioritizing their teachings over the Bible. Many young men and women (especially men) are struggling. This is a huge barrier to entering the church. So please add more Korean subtitles to your videos in the future. It will help us a lot. thank you.

Faith, in the primordial sense, means trust
It would seem that Abraham knew (or had faith) that his son Isaac would not actually die, evident when he said to his servants “we will worship and come back to you” and he answered Isaac that “God himself will provide the sheep for Holocaust.”
If Abraham is my 'Father in faith' I always pictured an old saintly man setting out the journey (I happened to be a character too simple) with a head so full of the 'ritual' that lay ahead and a heavy heart so wrenched with pain. Even now I think that Abraham, in both the instances was not answering but 'putting together words that would sound normal in face of the queries. *Having faith in GOD cancels ANYTHING that GOD MIGHT DO or WON'T DO but fills one's attitude with 'GOD KNOWS BEST and I AM WILLING TO GIVE ALL'* (this is just me.)
Listening to Bishop and Brandon has been great comfort, just to give some room for thinking that it wasn't that bad after all.

My understanding of Christ sacrifice is the correction on God's part of the covenant-- Basically, saying 'I screed up! Not you" I take responsibility for the fall, the entry of sin, the wound, the accident whatever you want to call the incident where there was a 'virus' that entered perfection. This trope about humans disobeying does harm at a soul level. Putting it on us. We respond certainly to the call. But we cannot take the fall for the FALL. That's a burden we were never meant to bear.
We in our urban environment don't appreciate the number of stars. Go to the wilderness, high on a mountain, or in a desert away from lights, and you will see a true panorama of stars, not dimmed by our own lights... That's what Abraham would have seen...

I am a fervent believer in God , in Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. However, I have a question about Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moraya.
Could Abraham have taken Isaac to Mount Moraya for a burnt offering if God didn't bestow so many favors onto Abraham first?
In other words, if our Lord God's first "meeting request" of Abraham was: sacrifice your son Isaac to me in a burnt offering, would Abraham have followed our Lord God's request?

Abraham and Isaac, seems a foreshadowing of worse to come for a parent. As a human parent, and a Christian, I can go right up to the chopping block, but then I stop , and I would start asking a lot of questions and have alternative suggestions… the wrestling with God or his angels…describes me. The explanation given regarding Abraham sacrificing Isaac is thought provoking and beautiful.
My take on the story never included the possibility that a sacrifice would occur. I read it as God drawing the line in the sand. I assumed, (yes, I know what’s said about assuming) that human sacrifice wasn’t necessarily an uncommon occurrence among the various tribes who worshipped a number of deities in that part of the world.
Again, I assumed that Abraham‘s tribe, prior to the covenant, practiced a pagan religion not unlike that of other tribes. I seem to remember that each tribe worshiped different gods, and it wasn’t particularly uncommon to see human sacrifice being practiced.
The Abraham/Isaac story seemed to show God telling his people that He didn’t want or require human sacrifice.
And again, I assumed the God of Abraham wanted to demonstrate just how different he was, so different that he revealed to Abraham that no god existed but Him. Human sacrifice was now a thing of the past, and was not required to love and trust him.
I suppose I couldn’t conceive that the lesson God wanted to deliver, could have ended in human sacrifice as a way to appease him.
I considered the sacrifice that Jesus made, as God sacrificing himself, not as an appeasement to an angry god who demands blood and fear as entertainment, but as a demonstration of his love for humanity. Even today I find it difficult to understand the deeper meaning associated with sacrifice.
Perhaps, in the ancient world the image and meaning associated with sacrifice, whether human or animal, held a significance in antiquity that is hard to understand today.
If it’s relevant enough, I like to hear you discuss the behind the scenes significance of sacrifice in the ancient world. And how or why the crucifixion seemed so relevant to people 2000 years ago.
If God had delayed the incarnation 2000 years, It’s hard to imagine anyone would find the image of God being nailed to a cross a compelling reason to take notice. Timing is everything I suppose.

Syriac Christians like Maronites, Chaldeans and Assyrians believe Abraham was originally one of them before he left for Canaan. In fact today there's a Christian community today recognized by the knssest called Arameans. I highly recommend reading up on Israeli-Aramean-Maronite-Aramaic activist Shadi Khollul of the philos project. Israelis believe Abraham gave birth to their nation as well as Samaritans who still exist(about 1000) today mostly in Nabulus. I also recommend reading up on a real life good Samaritan Abood Cohen who does a lot of good work to build bridges between peoples. Of course Arabs believe they are descended from Ishmael and even the Baha'is a religion from Persia believe their prophet is connected through Abraham's forgotten third wife Keturah.

I didn’t understand, but I think I do now. Respectfully, I don’t think morality as it is usually thought of, is possible without God. I’m not a Bible scholar so I can’t comment on your question with anything but a superficial explanation that probably isn’t what you are looking for.
Generally speaking, all people from all societies share a surprisingly similar relationship to morality. IE: lying, murder, being fair, etc. Cultures do differ widely, but the core values remain the same. The scripture tells us that his law, his morality and his expectations are written in our hearts.
Your comment about seeing within the scriptures a pattern indicating that God blesses those who follow their own ideas about what is good or evil is hard to make. If we are talking about the God of Abraham, there isn’t alternative sets of values or moralities to choose from. We do have free will and we can exercise that powerful gift for good or ill. But what I don’t see in your example is the following: A coherent narrative throughout scripture indicating that God blesses those who: stand up to him, disregard his council and do whatever they think is the right thing to do.
Moments in scripture, like the story of Abraham and Isaac, do illustrate that God honors man’s agency. We have a choice. However, the hope, I think is to recognize and honor the greatest possible good- God.
The stories seem to show God trying to help his creation, the beings he created in his own image. Which includes all the attributes of God: free will, creativity, intelligence etc. And then learn how to live and appreciate that incredibly important and unimaginably wonderful, powerful and sacred gift.
When people choose their own morality and see themselves as not a reflection of his image, but in essence see themselves as the highest good. The whole of world history shows us the results of that move. Men acting like they are God- the obvious results of taking that attitude has given us horrific examples of human suffering.
Believers in God, at least the Judeo Christian concept of God, believe that they are reflections or patterns of what He is. The stories we see in scripture when man and God are in the thick of what we think of as troubling examples that bring to bear something as hard to understand as human sacrifice. I think these lessons show us how important it is that we, not God, need to understand what it can mean for humanity, or a single human being to be like him.
For example, the mafia has its own sense of morality and guards it with death penalties for those who step out of line. They do operate within a moral framework, but at the bottom, it’s not based upon the highest good, God. It’s based upon the lowest instincts of man, greed, power, etc. So I don’t think that God’s message to us, is to disregard what it means to be good.
I wish I could have answered your question at the depth you asked it, but I did all I could do with it.

I always appreciate these videos. I do think there’s more going on than simply Abraham’s faith being an example of what is required for personal commitment. Abraham was chosen to start the events that would undo the tragedy of the garden, and begin the whole process of salvation. Would he pass the test? Or would someone else need to be found who would listen and therefore become the father of our faith?

This is a great meditation overall, and I appreciate everything that you do. However, as an old testament scholar, I must disagree that God is asking Abraham to murder his son. God is the author of life, and to him all life belongs. What he is asking Abraham, is to give Isaac back to him. God, as author of life, cannot commit murder. Murder is the unauthorized and deliberate killing of an innocent human being. God is the only one who can authorize the taking of life. This understanding makes sense of a lot of other passages in the Old Testament as well.

For truly what a cursed cross to carry? Which one should discard instead of kissing when glanced upon. For (you claim) the Creator was abused upon it. Yet you appear to worship it, so are you one of His enemies? For it was the grave that held your (so-called) god in it. Oh worshippers of Christ, Wake up. You said that God doesn't need anything from us and can therefore just love us. Does this mean that when we freely give our friendship to God, we change him. We confirm to him that indeed we are good. We make him smile, we move him...
On why Abraham would even consider obeying God’s command to do the deed to Isaac: Abraham’s time was different. I believe pagan religions in ancient Mesopotamia practiced human sacrifice. It was not unknown to Abraham. Perhaps Abraham believed God was truly asking it of him and as God, He was well within His right to demand full obedience. But we get insight into Abraham’s feelings when Isaac asked, “We have the wood but where is the victim (to be sacrificed)” to which Abraham responds “God Himself will provide the victim.” I believe that to the very end Abraham expected God to come through for him, to save him from this great pain, and indeed God comes through for him. The ram that was sacrificed instead of Isaac prefigured Jesus, the victim that God provided.
Additionally, God already for-knew that Abraham would obey Him so why even put him through the test? I think it is for Abraham’s sake, that he may know himself to be capable of complete and utter obedience to God but also complete trust in the mercy of God.

The Almighty himself had become his reward and safeguard, but having humility and the things of the world in mind, he questioned the reason for any further reward when he responded, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” So we see the devaluation of the highest promise, reduced to comparison to the gifts of a perishable nature: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir...Look up to the sky and count the stars-if indeed you can count them. I grew up fetching water from the Well, where all people in the community converge to get water. Well is a meeting point where older people, when I was a teenager come to look for girls. Water is life and the most important after other things, people must come to get water and you will see all the fine ladies. Am not surprised that people of the ancient world found wives in the well
