- Today we're speedrunning Super Smash Bros Brawl's amazing story mode, Subspace Emissary. It's definitely one of the most memorable games from my childhold, and a great speedrun too!

Smash brawl subspace emissary was my favorite adventure mode to play with my friend! The scenes are so well made! I wish smash ultimate world of light had more cutscenes like brawl

Fun fact: the mushrooms are NOT rng. The poison shrooms are a slightly darker shade. Having played for 5+ years with items, it becomes very noticeable.

I think they mean RNG as in its random which one of the two spawn in each level. Sometimes its a big shroom, sometime its a poison shroom. The shrooms themselves look different, but game doesn't spawn the same one at the same spot every time.

And it’s impossible to see it, but the bad mushroom has the mean eye brows.
I love Brawl from the bottom of my heart. It was the first Wii game I've ever played, and it was a blast when I was a kid. Subspace Emissary was great, playing with my brother, defeating Tabuu, unlocking characters and all. I'm really glad you are speedrunning one of my nostalgia games! Glad it was also one of your childhood games!
my proudest moment in brawl was defeating tabuu on intense on my first try while also finishing him with a trophy stand
It was my second game on the Wii ever. My first was Skyward Sword
I played it once and it pawned a love for a series that ultimately convinced me to give mainline video games a chance, because before that I only wanted to play LEGO games. Course after fricking Sora(I hate that little over glorified anime protagonist) joined I sort of left the franchise and haven’t played nearly as much as I used to. Hopefully the next game isn’t filled up with anime characters and have some people from more western games rather than almost entirely games from Japan. No hate towards them whatsoever, but the amount of anime looking characters is getting out of hand!

So to answer your question of how the Ruined Zoo level connects to Earthbound, here's what it is.
This level is likely secretly one big reference to the Podunk Zoo found in Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings (which wasn't localized yet during Brawl lol). As for that specific weird ghost enemy, my guess is that it's likely a nod to the final boss of Mother 1, Giegue. The body shape is very similar and the idea of them attacking in a way that doesn't really make sense fits in with him. They also could be references to the Starman enemies.
Subspace cuts DEEP for references, there's a lot more here than people realize
also, "darker hair lucas" is his (dead) brother, and the statue is the King Statue, notable for having stupid high stats, but vulnerability to OHKO attacks

A lot of the levels are vague references to specific games/locations. The Ruined Zoo shares a lot of similarities visually with the Podunk Zoo (and even has a distant mountain in the background that might be a reference to Mt. Itoi).
It also just makes sense to reference Mother 1. It didn't get a fighter so it's only fair it got the Subspace level. Further, Japan actually really loved Mother 1. It's widely beloved and considered on par with Earthbound (and higher than Mother 3). Its protagonist (Ninten) was one of the most demanded Mother characters to join besides Lucas in the Japanese Brawl poll. We likely would have gotten him if Brawl had released before 3.
Tossing in a level based on the first dungeon of that game just makes sense and there's too many similarities for it to be a coincidence.
Also Pokémon Trainer is probably a stand in for Ninten in this level.

That seemed like a weird stipulation - when has Mario ever been able to glide? Until I remembered:
- Super Mario World (when using a Cape Feather)
- Super Mario 64 (when wearing a Wing Cap)
- Super Mario Odyssey (after capturing Glydon)
And those were just off the top of my head.
don't remember the game but wasn't there a power up that looks like a leaf that turns mario into a flying racoon?
@@purplestar322 Yep, the Super Leaf is actually in several games. It was introduced in SMB3 and was also in 3D Land, 3D World, and NSMB2. It's also in the SMB3 style in all versions of Super Mario Maker.
there's also the Acorn in New Super Mario/Luigi U. That allows you to glide as well

These two missing the lore of mother 3 while also having a great example of Lucas and Claus' dynamic is incredible

As someone with an older brother, this entire video was wonderfully relatable and brought back a lot of fun memories of playing games together and CONSTANTLY switching between arguing and laughing hysterically. Great run!
Honestly, I absolutely LOVE the brothers dynamic. Reminds me of playing with my sister, who I can no longer game with 😔

During the part where Lucas is being chased King Porky's statue, the player 2 color for Lucas is his older brother, Claus. So, the younger brother is playing the younger brother and the older brother is playing the older brother.
Brawl’s Story Mode is one of the best stories ever. It’s memorable, difficult at times, long, and it brings together so many great characters

You REALLY should rewatch all the cutscenes. Everything makes more sense despite the almost total lack of dialogue (even then, the one intelligible line is Snake simultaneously referencing a Metal Gear Solid quote and breaking the fourth wall since there was no one else in the room he could have been talking to).
But there are still some things they don't say in-game, like how Tabuu's motivation for dragging the world into Subspace is because he can observe the normal world but cannot leave Subspace. Other things they explain online are how Ganondorf and Bowser take commands from Master Hand (who Tabuu used puppet strings on to control, something they and Wario are unaware of), Dedede accidentally stopping Meta Knight from preventing the theft of the Halberd (which they wanted to include in the game but couldn't due to time constraints), how Dedede knows about Tabuu and his Off Waves (and made badges to revive trophies because otherwise the only way to reverse being turned into a trophy is if another fighter touches the base, which wouldn't be possible if Tabuu used the Off Waves), and more I'm probably forgetting.
I remember playing free for all's against my friends. My favorite moment is when we were both last stock my friend collected all the dragon parts and aimed it at me. But I spot dodged just before he attacked. During the pause he let screamed out "yeah, eat it!". When he saw my character was fine his face sank and I won the game. Then he started hitting me irl.

Brawl has the best intro music of any of the smash bros games. In just sounds so perfect for hyping you up for an epic fight.

When I was growing up, my copy of this game had a scratch preventing me from going past a certain point in the subspace emissary, or spending too long in certain menus. We could sometimes get to the point where Ness and Lucas teamed up, but no further before it crashed. My sister did eventually figure out a place that could fix the disk, so we have now completed the campaign, but it was a bit frustrating for a very long time. Also, I have to agree with your sister: though I may never have played any Fire Emblem games, Ike was the best.

As someone who only got to play Smash when everyone else was bored of playing and thus an avid consumer of single-player mode, I was absolutely awed by Subspace. Kind of a shame I never finished, lol
The thing i love about one of the 3ds smash single player games is that there are enemies from quite a few series, including a few pokemon. The only one i can recall is Chandelure, but still it's awesome.
Olimar is a hard working, well-spoken man who works as a pilot for a failing space delivery company under a greedy, corner cutting boss to provide for his family. Thoughts of returning home to his wife and their young son and daughter keep him going when his job keeps him away for long periods of time as it often does.
Ash definitely still has Aura, it's just that it's only mentioned when the writers intend to make use of it.
The "Ridley's too big" argument was never about their ability to adjust his size like they did for Olimar or Kirby because of course they could and eventually did but rather it stemmed from an interview where Sakurai said that Ridley's intimidating monstrous stature was too crucial to representing him accurately for him to be a fighter. They brought up his unrestricted, tireless flight as well. They essentially tried picturing 54:38 but Ridley and Samus were roughly the same height and he couldn't freely fly and decided that it was too contrary to what made him who he is.
Kong is a clan name not just Donkey's family name so you're right that the Kongs aren't all related but Diddy is in fact Donkey III's (this Donkey's) nephew not just his buddy.

I personally enjoy running the shorter categories more, but this category has also some sick wrong warps that i have found on accident and are now integral parts of the run.

Fun fact! The Chickadee's standard call is just two beats. The "Chick-a-dee-dee-dee..." that they get their name from is their warning call, with the number of "dee"s often indicating the specific danger that they are warning about. And you're not alone in thinking it's a fun call to imitate. I, too, used to run around shouting "CHICK-A-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE" ad infinitum until my parents and older sisters yelled at me to stop.

Subspace Emissary is by far the best story mode i've ever played in my life! Without it, I probably wouldnt have sunk 11k hours into Brawl. 4k of those being the Subspace, another 4k being me bringing it to all the parties and hangouts with friends, and the last 3k being doing that same thing, but with mods when I got older like Brawl+, Brawl-, and Super Smash Bros Infinite (which is by far the best mod, nothing will change that)
This vid was so nostalgic- definitely got brought to some good memories playing this with my brother too!

when I played brawl as a kid, I never knew about tripping. I never tripped. I beat story mode, and classic mode without tripping. I don't know how, but I did.
you probly didnt realise like me, but now that iam older and experienced in playing games i played it again and ya you realise it now so much more :)
I love this campaign, there was a time where not everyone had multiplayer games and people still played local games like this.

I feel that people like Subspace Emissary in hindsight more than they did when Brawl came out.
World of Light was a disappointment by comparison.
Right? I hated world of light, only the map and the ending were good. The TLOZ puzzle was a pain, there was no way to win this one bowser stage without cheesing him with a strat of those card buff things, the final bosses were literal balls who just summoned clones of the characters for the bulk of their fights.
Then you have Subspace Emissary. A masterpiece of a mode with intricately made cutscenes and stages, fun engaging bosses and puzzles, a literal mashup maze that is so well put together, one of the most memorable final bosses ever and a simultaneously endearing and simple storyline with open ended theories, it was just amazing. There's also the coins for the coin shooter mode, medals I remember spending hours scrolling through and reading descriptions of, the sticker mode to put together stickers on pages and before online got shut down you could send them to people. And to top it all off it had such a fantastic semirealistic art style that somehow fit on a Wii and remained iconic to this day. I still play Brawl from time to time, it's just unforgettable and so much fun. And the slower pace and weighted attacks in brawl were my casual noob self's cup of tea. Proud Zelda main! Still hate how she got changed to the Phantom Hourglass version in ultimate.
God WoL is so underwhelming. What if 500 ai battles but it's difficult because of the 5 random instant kill conditions we put on every stage.

I have a good memory of brawl because I remember getting it for my 5 birthday and my entire family played it all day
I have a ton of fond memories of subspace, this was a nostalgic video to watch
I miss the Subspace Emissary so much. the second ever 2 player game i played with my brother when we were both little was the Subspace Emissary (the first being LittleBigPlanet2) because I wasn't good enough yet at smash bros to be a challenge, but i was just good enough to keep up with him in the story mode. (and as the younger sibling I am forever player 2)

When I was younger Ike was definetly a fave in this game, I had also never touched a fe game before. Because of it, my mom went to hell and back to find me a copy of fire emblem radiant dawn, and to this day it’s my favourite game of all time.

Brawl in general is such a nostalgic trip for me, I played it with my younger brother as well though I let him play as first player, so I was the one who never worried about dying LOL
Not surprised Easy was a Bulbasaur starter. That how you beat the first two gyms fastest, Bulba takes down the rock and water gyms soon as it learns its first plant type move.
