    Lumbar spine surgical animation depicts a posterior lateral two level fusion at L4, L5 & S1 to decompress nerve roots. Incision is made posteriorly, from L4 to S1 vertebral spines. Laminectomies are performed along with removal of the spines at L4-5 & L5-S1. Nerve root is mobilized to allow access into the spinal canal. Discectomy is performed at L4-5 & L5-S1 in order to decompress the spine. Spacers (Cages) and bone graft are then inserted in between the vertebras at L4-5 & L5- S1, in order to maintain disc height. Six pedicle screws are place bilaterally at L4, L5 & S1. Two rods are inserted bilaterally at L4-S1 to complete the fusion.

    I had this same exact procedure done. Best deduction I did about it. No leg pain the moment I woke up from surgery. I had no pain and even opted out from taking the prescribed pain killers. Recovery is uncomfortable; it took 3 months to make a full recovery, but totally worth it, as I never have any kind of nerve or back pain. I wasted a lot of time and money seeing chiros, physical therapist, and getting epidural shots. If you have a herniated disc, it needs tube fixed surgically. It's 2017, this is a fairly simple procedure nowadays for surgeons. Don't be scared, living with chronic pain and medicated is no way to live.

    had L4 L5 fusion 4 weeks ago , x walking a mile the first week , not as bad as 90 % say on here , keep moving and it keeps soreness down , hardest part is watching someoneelse do your normal daily chores for you and there's only so many shows on tv.

    I had S-1, L-5, L-4, & L-3 fused. It is a very deliberated decision to have such a traumatic and invasive surgery done on ones body, however, the relief of constant pain is very much apparent. The pain you deal with while recovering is the muscle & other tissue rejoining & healing after a major invasive procedure. An equitable trade off.

    • @celebtrvl
      @celebtrvl 9 років тому +14

      I agree with you, but initially the pain was absolutely horrific. After the physical therapy and just trying to get my flexibility back so I could bend again took awhile, but it was definitely worth it compared to the pain I was dealing with every day for a very long time. Everything has been good as new for years now.

    • @stevemildge

      For myself there was pain, but a different pain. Probably the pain of having the back muscles cut, then they heal & mend kind of pain.
      Have to gear up for my 4th operation, as I did not heed the doctors advice and kept working.

    Please don't do heavy exercises without any trained coach in the gym .I had this surgery done in this Feb 2015. It was not an easy decision but being a cardiovascular technologist it's make me on a positive way to go ahead for a laminectony at L1 S5 segment I am 30 and now doing okay though it's just recently done but I believe it's gonna be okay in future. So please don't delay it if you are having irregular pains in your legs or leg back or may be neck.

    I had this procedure done in 2009 but the doctor did not put in the interbody fusion cages. UCLA Health the hospital that performed the operation, did not tell me the cages were not used. I found out a couple of years later when I went to a different spine surgeon for advice. UCLA will not tell me why the cages were not used but, as a result, my spine did not fuse and I was left in worse shape than before. I'm now recovering from a second surgery that I believe corrected the mishaps of the first doctor (Duncan McBride). I am hoping for a strong recovery this time and definitely feel like I got a much better result from Cedars Sinai.
    I think that one of the things that makes this surgery so dangerous is that it is not easy to research your doctor and get any meaningful reviews of their work. Some reviews of doctors that I read online complained about how long they had to wait when visiting the doctor which is hardly as important as the outcome. Some doctors were rated very highly but the procedures were very simple, not complex and invasive operations such as this. The reviews that I found most useful were those that discussed the complexity of the operation (the procedure, the history of back pain, whether it was a first or corrective surgery, etc.) more than the doctor's demeanor or promptness.
    Once you have identified a doctor you may want to perform the surgery, try to talk to other doctors that are familiar with his/her work. Especially any doctors that you already know and trust. That is what gave me the most confidence in choosing my second doctor, whom I went with even though he was not in my insurance network.

That is when you will benefit from it. Otherwise you'll regret it. Too many people go under the knife thinking its no big deal. After all, surgeons make it sound like its a walk in the park. Try ALL other options first, even if its just an inversion table to put space back in the vertebrae. It only takes the weight of a penny on a nerve root to make your legs and back feel like crap. Fusion is a last resort and once its done, you're pretty much out of options. And having it done also wears on the joint above and below the fusion which can lead to having more fusions. I myself had two microdiscectomy's on L3-4 4-5 and a laminectomy on L3-4. Its all good for a couple weeks til the scar tissue moves in and pushes on the nerves, then you feel like crap again til the scar tissue matures. Then it lessens up again. I wish I never had it done but I didnt have much of a choice. Was stuck on the floor too many times and could walk. When you blow some disks out, it can be a painful mf'er! Dealt with it for 5 yrs. Think I'd rather have a snapping turtle stuck on my balls!🥴

      I would have to disagree. Maybe in some cases, but in my case for instance I have stenosis real bad and the nerve canals are basically completely closing and squeezing nerves. So the only way to relieve this is to have it cleaned out and fused for stability. Inversion table absolutely destroys my back. I'm in so much pain when I get back up I can barely stand it.
