@@KarolynsKakes so happy to hear you’ll be posting more! I’m super appreciative of your instructional videos, but have you ever thought of posting vlogs? Like day in the life of a home baker. Also a great video idea I think might be a reflection video. As in, practices and techniques that you did previously and what you’ve changed or updated to help your business be more efficient. 🙂
I always put a non-skid mat under the cakeboard in the cardboard box and another non-skid under the cardboard box in my suv in the back where it is flat. This helps keep the cake and cardboard box from moving or skidding! It works wonders every time. I live in the Deep south very near to the Gulf of Mexico. During the summer it is extreme hot and humid, I start my SUV and put it full blast cold AC for about 15 mins then pit the cake inside. If I have to make a long trip which I have in the past, i get a bigger cardboard box for the cake and use cut off styrofoam cups to put dry ice in the corners tape it up with duct tape. It worked! I have delivered it to the beaches. We drive carefully but a lot times we almost come to an accident due to other people’s careless driving! That’s always on my mind!!! I prefer to deliver the cakes myself than letting my customers. I learned from experience. My husband keep telling me if the customer wants to pick it up and I have already had a word about handling the cake while transporting it is out of my hands. Well the first time a let a customer pick it up. The customer didn’t follow my advice and the cake was destroyed. Send me a photo of it. I was so upset and spend so much time it was a beautiful cake. I immediately make another one to replace it. After that happened, I tell all my customers I am delivering no matter what!
Yes! I do the same with the non slip mat, it really works well! And that stinks about the customer mishandling the cake. I understand why you want to make sure it gets there in 1 piece!
Wow, that is amazing! You are only one person. Learn to let go. If they mess up their cake, it is on them. Take a picture and put it in a portfolio for others to admire but don't remake it for free. Your time, materials, and labor cost a lot too. Know your worth and hold people accountable.
All great tips which I have used. I may add one more and that is to lock your car. You think you may be not long going into the venue before setting up etc then get back and the cake is gone or some animals get into the car.
Thanks so much, Karolyn, for your awesome videos!! You are so talented and have the best personality! You’ve inspired me to start back up my home baking business again after many years. Thanks for all the helpful tips!
This video really highlights another reason custom cakes are $$. The customer passes all of the planning and stress of delivery off to the caker. From their view **poof** the cake appears. Behind the scenes there may have been hours of thought, let alone the actual physical delivery time.
Thank you soo much for all your videos!!! Your videos have helped me so much with trying to start my home baking business!! Also, your personality is awesome!! 🙂
I learned to make sure the cake is not sitting in the car where the sun will be shining on it. I make sure it is under cover if the sun is out and bright, even on cold days. This was a hard lesson. I was delivering a birthday cake an hour and half away in November. So it was not a hot month/day. But the sun was shining through the window on it. The frosting softened and the cake was sliding. 😩 Thankfully, I was able to fix it enough. And they were fine with it. But I have never done that again. Love ❤️ your videos!!!
OMG that's happened to me! And it sucked because the one main road I had to drive on, that's where the sun was hitting it. So I had no clue that would happen. It's the worst!
Soooo (lol I do that as well) I live in a rurrrrral area (heee heee) and I agree with all of this. My delivery radius is a little bigger. 5 miles does even get me to the main road. All the info about venues, refrigerators at the venues, parking…. Yes 👏🏻! Unrelated, lol I would love to learn about some of your money saving tips. In a video you made a mermaid tail but you used a leaf cutter for the fins. I think one time you mentioned saving cake boards that were just used to hold a smaller tier.. you use these to make cake drums??? Am I remembering correctly? I guess I feel like I could more bang for my buck by getting tools and equipment that could be used for multiple purposes. Idk if that made sense… maybe I need a coffee lol Great video and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
Also add potholes; speed humps;; trucks and cars who drive very close to back of your car;; at venue children not being supervised running and playing near cake ;; staff moving cake after you have left the premises; given instructions to people about cleanliness of car only to find when they arrive haven’t listened and car is unclean;Janice australia
I agree with all your tips. I have had a few customers tell me that their tiered buttercream wedding cake started to slide and move throughout the event. When I delivered, the room was warm. It was summer and the air was on, but not cold enough. Is there anything I can do when stacking that would help with them sliding? The 5 tiers cakes I make are for Middle Eastern clients, in New York. There wedding last for a long time before they cut.
Oh no! I would say that you need more supports in there. If it's 5 tiers, I would stack the bottom 3 tiers (with straws in there for support like in my videos) and dowel the bottom 3 a little to the left of center. Then put on the 4th tier and dowel all 4 tiers a little to the right of center. Then put the top tier on and dowel all 5 tiers through the center. With 3 dowels, it really should stay in place!
I would love a video showing how you prepare your cakes for long delivery. I have to travel from Vancouver, WA to Seaside, OR (about 2 hours) with a memorial birthday cake for my Aunt. I decided to do a 3-tier cake but never considered the travel time. I am thinking about just filling it and then frosting and decorating once I get there. I am afraid if I don't it will be ruined.
Here ya go! ua-cam.com/video/WmVrh7ZNqRw/v-deo.html I never deliver 2 hours away just because a lot can happen in that amount of time. It may be best to assemble it once you arrive so the drive there is less stressful!
I love your videos and you are so talented! As far as delivery, do you let people come to your home to pick up cakes? I'd like to start my own business but not crazy about the idea of people coming to my home. What's your experience?
Thank you! I tell people to text me when they arrive and I bring the cake out to them. I don't let people in my house. Not even to go to the bathroom, there is a convenience store 1 mile away that I send people to. Back in the day, I used to let people in. And on more than one occasion, they overstayed their welcome and wouldn't freakin leave! LOL
Thanks for your quick reply! Customers checking out my bathroom and overstaying their welcome would definitely be too weird for me. LOL! Thanks for sharing your videos and your experience!
Planning on making cupcakes for a party, and wanted to find out if your doctored cake mix,, and buttercream frosting will stay fresh if making them on Friday night for a Sunday evening event without putting them in the refrigerator? I'm making so many I don't have room in the fridge.
They will be fine, I've done that many times! What I'd recommend is to bake them and wrap them in food safe plastic wrap until you're ready to decorate them. Once decorated, you can put them in a cake box and they should be fine sitting at room temp
If I didn't have a car, I would require the customers to pick their cakes up, I wouldn't offer delivery. You could use Uber / Lyft or ask a friend to take you, but that will cost you money and would be a waste!
If you enjoy my tutorials, I'd be so grateful if you could Buy Me A Coffee!
