You might be interested to know that last year The Wicker Man celebrated it's 50th anniversary. There were quite a few cinemas in the UK showing this movie again, there were even a couple of special events where the actress who played Willow (Britt Ekland) was also there being interviewed and talking to fans.

Same with the Nordics lol. Every midsummer we used to go to see näcken; a water spirit but basically a naked man playing the violin in a lake. 😄I'm glad we still have them! It's important to remember our traditions, sans the blood sacrifices.

This is even scarier when you watch it for a second time in the knowledge that they all know what's planned and how they're all manipulating him.

Awesome movie! Great reaction as always, sir! So many modern films, including Midsommar, take stuff from The Wicker Man, but the original will never lose its power. That ending!!!!

There are a couple of facts about this movie some of you may or may not already know.
    1) The movie was inspired by a book called "Ritual" by David Pinner
    2) Because sir Christopher Lee (god rest his soul) was getting bored of being typecast as playing Dracula in the Hammer movies, he played the role of Lord Summerisle for free and then went on to say that this was the greatest part in a movie he ever got. However he has stated that there are parts from the movie which is missing.

I have seen the script . Part of it was verbose . It doesn’t add much . The 102 version where Sgt. Howie is first on the mainland and then flies to Summerisle is good and the one I own . The only part where Rowan’s mother and Sgt Howie debate and it is cut short is what should have been !

Edward Woodward was the first Equalizer in the 1980s. He was ex CIA (in the series).

Propitiation of a vengeful god through blood sacrifice is as old as humanity and a constant in the overwhelming majority of historical religions (what else is the crucifixion about). In pre christian celtic northern Europe this sort of thing was the norm. Julius Caesar mentions it during his conquest of what is now France. In Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles (but not in the film which I don't know if you've seen) one of the vampires from antiquity talks about such a festival that he witnessed.
Yeah this film is very well known. Most people know the plot before they see it these days which reduces the impact. Unsettling and extremely disturbing rather than a classic horror. A little surprised that you didn't recognise a maypole but then growing up in 21st century Florida will be a very difference experience to growing up in provincial England in the 1970s.
I'd love it if you went back to doing more old films on your channel rather than modern TV btw.

I wish more reactors watched anything that wasn't the dull superhero genre stuff, of which some is good, but most feel like they were completely the product of market testing. Watered-down bleh. It's unpopular, but it's just my opinion.

If nobody's mentioned it so far, this was released as a 'double bill' in the 70s along with 'Don't Look Now!' as both studios believed neither film was good enough to be a 'stand alone' movie. 🤔🙄😅 Since then however, they're both regarded as unique, horror/mystery masterpieces! (Also I don't think I've ever seen a first time reaction to Don't Look Now! so I'd love to see yours 😉🤗)
Ooh, also the remake, I was so pumped for it and it ended up a legendary turkey 😭🤣

    • @letsrock1729
      @letsrock1729 8 місяців тому

Wow, I didn't know that! I love both films and have them on DVD. And yes, a reaction to 'Don't Look Now' would be awesome.
Another classic in the 70s horror genre is 'The Stepford Wives' (the remake of this was terrible too)....I'd love a reaction to this as well.

What a great reaction! 😂This is one of my favourite movies ever. That reveal of the Wicker Man is one of the most harrowing shots in any movie.
And yes, the religious practices are based on real pagan stuff. In Europe we still have quite a lot of pagan traditions left in places like Scotland, Ireland, and the Nordics, so in some ways the movie hits close to home.
And I highly recommend the remake. It's the funniest bad movie ever made to date. 🤣

So the religion depicted in the movie is definitely based on... not a "real" religion, per se but certain scholars' interpretation of real religions. Pre-christian Celtic paganism. Druids and such. One of the major sources, I understand, is The Golden Bough, which isn't based in history so much as vibes. It's a modern scholar's attempt to describe an ancient religion we actually know very little about. Celts did not have a written language and worshipped in sacred groves, which don't stand the test of time. we know the names of some gods, some rituals maybe, we know the druids existed, but honestly very little else. The wicker man itself came from the writing of Caesar, describing human sacrifice carried out by Gallic Celts (in modern day France) but it's impossible to know whether he was describing an actually practiced ritual or creating anti Gaul propaganda, since he was at war with them. Basically we don't know for sure how ancient Celts actually worshipped, but the pagans in this movie are meant to be practicing a neo-pagan sort of religion, taking what we "know" of how the Celts worshipped and then doing their own thing, live laugh loving, burning people alive, etc. There's a reason the filmmaker chose a strict Catholic as the protag, the farthest thing from a pagan possible. Anyway, great movie, great reaction, thank you :)

The Golden Bough is a comprehensive anthropological study of pagan and aboriginal religions and their connections to the religions of civilized societies. Basically, the conclusion is that all religious belief originates from certain types of magical thinking which are innate to the human mind and essentially the same in all cultures. One of the deepest books ever written.

One of the ones i wanted to recommend to you Mike. Waiting for this. Kill List and Middsommar obviously took influence.
