I checked out loads of videos promising to explain how to do this. I discovered most of them are only interested in showing off how toned their bodies are at 5am when they wake up, then go through their morning routine until they need Alexa about 7 minutes in. By his time I gave up. And then I found your video: clear information from the start, simply described, and super helpful. Thank you! (I have to add that the menu for Add Device, etc. on my app is on the bottom right under "More", but everything else is the same.)
Many thanks again for these Chard. I have a sister out of state and your tutorials are so much more help to her then me trying to explain over the phone how to set these up!
I know im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost the password. I would love any help you can offer me.
Chad The Tech Guy: THANK YOU for the reply. I didn't think anyone does that. I will admit that am disappointed that I could not figure out something that is so simple. :) I appreciate you.
@@ChardTheTechGuy What I've been trying to do is use Alexa to turn on the TV and change the input to HDMI 2. No problem turning on the TV but I don't know how to get it to automatically change the input to HDMI 2.
@@ChardTheTechGuy Sure. It's a 3rd gen Echo Dot and the latest version of the Alexa app. The TV is a Vizio with Smart Cast and Alexa is connected to the TV. I'm using the command Turn on TV. I'd like to keep it all in a routine without using a hub but I'm not sure that can be done. Alexa has no trouble running the TV, changing the volume, input and so on.
Okay I see, I control my TV with a external device Broadlink RM Mini3 (Control Your TV With Alexa - ua-cam.com/video/y3gKbVUGhbc/v-deo.html ) because my TV don't have Alexa capabilities. The Broadlink RM Mini3 gives me a lot of Alexa skill-set like changing the volume, turn on & off and even routines. I found this for you How to Use Amazon Alexa Devices with your SmartCast TV support.vizio.com/s/article/Alexa-SmartCast-Display?language=en_US Does your TV showed up as a Device in the Alexa App? Another thing I want to mention some of my devices have limit routine options, not sure if that's a shortcoming of Amazon or the third part company like Vizio for instance.
Chad really liked your presentation techniques. I’m older and a bit tech challenged. But I’ve bred stumbling over how to automate turn on guard every night at a specific time and off in the morning at a certain time every day. I don’t want to have to remember to do it as often I don’t remember. Then later I may wish to override the guard routines by taking a trip for a week or so and having it on till I come home and turn it off. Any ideas for this fix?
How do you schedule a routine to turn off?? For example. I have a routine set for a skill that plays music to turn on at a certain time but can't find how to schedule it to turn off. 🤔
When you choose the Music & Media after you Select provider, below that is Duration set a timer for how long you want the music to play. But you are probably looking for specific time feature, sorry that's not currently available.
Chard The Tech Guy I see what you mean if selecting music or media but the duration option is not available when choosing a skill. I think I may just need to create a separate routine to turn off my Echo Show.....if that's even possible....but may not be. Anyway, thanks for your response!
how does this work for setting up a schedule to turn an amazon plug off. I have a light that comes on at sunset (according to the amamzon app) I want it to turn off at 1130pm how do I set it up
M Milyo You'll probably have to create a separate routine for that light to turn off if doing it through the Alexa app. Just create it the same way you did to get the light to power on but toggle to the power off option for the device.
Is there a step I may have missed setting up a motion sensor routine announcement? I have tried everything and I cannot get Alexa to announce if a motion was triggered. Your explanation on these routines are the best that I have viewed so far. Thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed your video, but I can't seem to figure out how to do the very basic: TURN On my smartplug & then turn it off at another time. No other action required....what am I missing?????? thanks for any help!
Hello thank you very much - try this other video I did "Alexa Routine: How To Make A Timer Routine" ua-cam.com/video/nW1PvdUqqhc/v-deo.html It might solve your problem
Hi Chard! If you don’t mind me asking, where are you from? You sound a lot like the Gullah/Geechee people from South Carolina. Or would you happen to have family from the Caribbean? (Bahamas,Barbados)?
Hey Martin I don't mind. I was born in Jamaica, lived there for 15 & even though I been in the USA for 34 yrs I still can't shake the accent. Thanks for asking & I hope you stay tune for more.
Thank you so much for the very informative video. I have a question please . Is it possible to program a smart plug to turn off a device after 1 minute from turning it on ? What I want to do is to turn on the tankless water heater pump ( using Alexa voice command) and then have the plug to turn it off after a minute but without command from me . Thanks in advance
You are very welcome, glad to help. Here is the example of the routine you are looking for, change it to your needs, see below Name: Heat Pump When you say Alexa, turn on heat pump Add 3 Actions Choose your heat pump smart plug - select it to be ON Choose Wait - select 1 minute Choose your heat pump smart plug - select it to be OFF Save and done. I will be doing a video on this routine, it could be used for other use cases. Thanks
I have a door sensor that when the door opens, an Alexa routine says "The door is open". QUESTION: I want Alexa to continue to say "The door is open" until I physically close the door. How do I do that?
I hope I give you the right answer, not understanding the first part of the question. The name is for you to know what the Routine is use for. Example Bedtime might set alarm and turn off the living room lights and TV. I have a few videos on this topic ua-cam.com/video/4hJUedg0ep8/v-deo.html. Check them out and ask me anything.
Why did you skip the part about controlling devices with voice? The only option i see for that in routines is device setting, and the only options in there are stop audio, pause and do not disturb.
So I got this echo dot for my birthday this year and I downloaded the Samuel E. Jackson voice. But everytime I say "goodnight", he keeps saying to set up a routine. I know how to do this with an Alexa; but I don't know how to do this with him specifically. Can you help me out please?
I think the routines only work with Alexa because she is built in, while Samuel is an added voice. I did some research online and I see where you can't se reminders and such, which are the core things that Alexa can do.
Hey Colin, I don't have the Ring System so I can't tell if it's in the routine options. If you follow the steps in this video, it basically has the steps to create any routines if those options are available.
Look at this man being inspirational
Thank you, I do have a show call Inspirational Vitamin on Sunday mornings
I just got my first Echo Dot and this was very helpful. Thanks!

Yes the side bar view was excellent ❤

Hello Albert, welcome to the world of Alexa. I will do some more multi-step routines videos, I've done plenty of those for my personal use.
