Out on tour together now. Catch them live while you can - Oysterbands long farewell tour and June is 76 but still sings like an angel. I saw them at RNCM on Saturday and it was joyous.
June Tabor and Maddy Prior sang together as, The Silly Sisters, in the 70's. Another coincidence, I worked with Maddy on trying to re-establish Brampton folk festival in north Cumbria, (I think in 2011) .
Will investigate asap Phil. We meet on similar lines again…I just spent the weekend jumping into my Folk (rock?!!) collection, which isn’t huge by any means. Loving Fairport, Steeleye, Pentangle in particular!! Have my eyes in some great 2 and 3 cd collections including June Tabor and the Oysterband. So now on your recommendation of this album I will dive in. Like you, I’m a 70’s Rock Kid . But recently have discovered(?) I like English Folk Music with that rocking element to them. Also, military bands … but that’s for another discussion maybe?!! 😅😂 It’s all music , we get older,… just enjoy it I say. Cheers. 👍🏻🤘🏻👌🏻🙌🏻❤😎
Glad you enjoyed this so much. The obvious place to go next is their previous collaboration, "Freedom & Rain" from 1990. Oysterband started out as the Oyster Ceilidh Band, an off shoot of the folk group Fiddler's Dram best known for their novelty hit "Day Trip to Bangor".
Hi Phil - great to see you've found the The Oyster Band and June Tabor - its never to late !! We need to do a folk, folk / blues video Phil. Artists like - in no particular order. Nick Drake, John Martyn, Davy Graham, Martin Simpson, Wizz Jones, The Fairports, Al Stewart, Martin Carthy, Mississippi John Hurt etc etc etc AND not forgetting the amazing guitarists John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Stefan Grossman and many more. It was Stefan that turned me onto the acoustic guitar, in particular his tutorial tapes which I bought from the US in the mid 60's. One set was of John Fahey - and that changed everything for me. His playing was spellbinding, and I couldnt get enough of him. Ended up with about 27 LP's of solo acoustic guitar, which I have since sold, but replaced where I can with CD's. So Phil - lets forget the electric guitar just for a moment, and do an acoustic video. Now that would be really something. Cheers Doug
Lucky enough to get one I think it’s limited to 600. Great album Phil. I saw Oysterband at Wickham festival a few yrs ago. But really started looking for their records when I bought June Tabor’s Anthology CD for a quid in a charity shop. There are two track from her with the Oysterband in there. Freedom & Rain is the other one. Both amazing records. They are on the final tour and also 8 gigs with June Tabor. We are going to see them in Leicester on Tuesday! Some aren’t sold out have a look Phil x
I bought the cd when it was released plus the 7" single Love Will Tear Us Apart. I think it's a good album. If I have a weak moment over the next couple of days I might go for the record 👍
Hi Phil, great to see you've discovered this album and these truly great artists. I've been listening to them for many years. I have all the albums of Oysterband and June Tabor. I'd recommend "Holy Bandits" and "Ride" by the Oysterband. "A Cut Above", "Angel Tiger" and "Against The Streams" by June. Take care.
Hey Phil, just caught up with this, thankyou! On first listen these were the songs that leaped out for me, lmk what you reckon... Bonny Bunch of Roses Love Will Tear Us Apart Judas If My Love Loves Me The Leaves of Life Seven Curses
You need to get the first June Tabor & The Oyster Band LP, 'Freedom and Rain' (1990).

Fabulous record as is their first. I was lucky enough to get one of only 500 of the Stamford / topic original release
