Devonport born and bred and started work in the Dockyard as an Engine fitter + turner 1962, the best apprenticeships skill's taught and are world class, loved it. Once a Janner, always a Janner. I had a terrific time growing up in Morice Town, up the Devonport park to kick a ball and mess around, just great.
Born and bred in Gibraltar I can relate to all this .Up to the late 80s Gibraltar was busy with visits from RN ship passing RFA and RMAS. Sadly visits have slowly declined to an occasional visit. Our resident RMAS Fleet was disbanded ,we had RMAS Dexterous Cyclone,Agile Capable Sealyham Airedale Edith all gone.We had frequent visits by RMAS Newton Auricula, Torrent ,Kinterbury Throsk and may others. Because the surface fleet is so small and thinly spread out ,we don't get complete fleet exercises as we knew it then. The annual Spring train exercises could easily have 20 ships in harbour at any one time. Great times. Salute to all those that have served from Gibraltar
I was born in Devonport in the early 60s i remember those scenes were part and parcel of my childhood paddling my canoe past those same ships and tugs which made the Tamar an amazing place to grow up near now sadly all but gone but anyway what a brilliant momento of days gone by.
I loved Plymouth in the 1960s, it was a wonderful place to live.
