It’s about time. Now it raises another question. How will that apply to those who Harley Davidson have already declined their warranty. This could potentially cause more law suits and will cost them more in the long wrong. Which could potentially bankrupt them. It’s a win for the consumer but could be very bad for the company. Time will tell.
This was kinda hit and miss not ALL dealerships voided warrenties because of the Magnusson-Moss act. If all HD stores did this then it would be a much bigger issue. So some owners will take a hit (for Example Big Boys Motors owns 3 dealerships in a given area ultimately those stores will have to take that hit covering denied claims the huge money drain may not get up to Harley itself as far as losing tons of money.) I think if Harley just did somehting as simple as prorate Warrenty coverage based on what you forfeited and most reasonable customers would be happy with that because of Brand Loyalty.
We recently had a customer bring his bike in that had the Harley ESP. He bought the bike certified used. Long story short he needed new motor work from the crank to the head. Open the bike up it’s all non Harley stock. It wasn’t a 103 it was a S&S 106 with heads and all. Harley sent an inspector down and voided the warranty because it wasn’t Harley parts in there even though the customer bought the bike like that thru Harley. So glad they did passed this.
I’m extremely glad to receive this information. I’m a relatively recent purchaser of a 2021 Harley Davidson Tri Glide Ultra. After less than two months of ownership I returned to my H. D. dealership to add a component that I thought I had to purchase from them, which was expensive. I was trying to obey the terms of the warranty, but the cost of the entire transaction was a complete surprise to me. After that matter, I started researching prices of aftermarket items for the vehicle and compared the H. D. prices with the threat of voiding my warranty with H. D. in mind, and discovered the difference was remarkable. Now this information is a relief and changes the aspect of future customization of my motorcycle. Again, I’m still new to ownership of this fantastic machine but after retiring from the retail industry and 21 years in the Air Force, I’m familiar with the business end of financial procedures and the manipulative process involved. Enough said, thank you for the valuable information. Stay safe in your travels.
I wonder if this applies to the tires for life as well. HD told me I voided it bc I didn't get my 5K service with them. I just couldn't justify paying over $500 for an oil change and other maintenance that could be done by yourself if you have the service manual.
@@MrTheDays1 what I had wasn't the extra warranty on tires. It's called Tires for Life and it came with the purchase of my bike last year. When I needed a new rear tire, I found out there's was a small print that states that you must get all maintenence done at the specified mileage. I did the 5k service myself so HD told me my tires for life is void.
I voided my warranty as soon as I took bike home.Harley shops are a rip off and make less power never understood why anybody would put screaming eagle junk on their bike!
This is great news that being said my local HD dealership has never given me issues with warranty repairs. I’ve used PowerVision and aftermarket 2-1 exhaust on my last 3 bikes and they always work on my bike with no complaints my 21 FXLRS had motor issues and needed new heads they replaced them after I already used a PowerVision and 2-1 Sawicki exhaust I installed myself and they covered all costs. I’ve heard crazy stories though best advice I can give is to create relationships at the dealership you deal with. Ride safe everyone!
I’ve been purposely only using H-D parts and tuners. I’m really looking forward to researching the potential to use some 3rd party parts and services. Well done!
That’s your fault, all they do is download a program from SE at the dealer. Them clowns can’t tune shit. Call fuel moto. SE parts and big bore” kits are a joke
@@Marvelkid87 you still cant😮 use a non compliant tuner. It has to be carb approved or your warranty is still voided. Carb compliant is basically stage 1 like Harley’s screaming eagle tuner. So you can’t do cams, cat less exhaust, ect.
I think the thing to remember is that Harley would still have the ability to void your warranty if they can show that the parts/tune…. etc were responsible for the failure. It won’t stop them from being able to void warranties it’ll just make them give specific reasons and evidence as to why, beyond it being “non authorized parts or service centre”.
This is absolutely correct and I believe they will be denying a lot Warranty work for those with the aftermarket cams and tuners. It's unfortunate, but that's exactly what will happen, this has me thinking twice about messing around with my new bike.
This is awesome. I have 2021 RKS. Last week at 5k miles, I had a 3rd party shop install s&s cam chest, woods 22xe cam and v&h x pipe with a dyno tune. Oh yeah, bike was only 7 mnths old. I had a remaining 17 mnths on my warranty. This is perfect.
If you change the original design (tuner, cams) Harley probably won’t have to warranty it. But changing pipes only or using another brand of brake pads or battery doesn’t meet the standard of changing the design. I think the biggest impact is you won’t need to pay Harley $500 for an oil change.
What do you mean by this bro ? I’m about to hit my 5k service and it was ridiculous on how much I got charged for my 1k service 650$ , I told the tech can I just changed my own oil and he said it can void the warranty if anything messes up . You think it’s safe to say I’m able to do the oil change by myself ( I have experience from my old bike) ?
@@madnessj98 yes. If you do it yourself or have an independent mechanic do the service it should not void the warranty. But I’m going to wait and see how this plays out for a few months before testing it.
This goes hand in hand with their lifetime warranty. I thought they would get hung up on that. They only give you the lifetime powertrain warranty if you do all maintenance at the dealership
I’m a tech at a Harley dealership, been doing it for 10ys. I wonder who covers the aftermarket parts in case of engine failure. I highly doubt the MoCo will be paying for them. They might cover the book labor time (this is usually way less than what it actually takes to do a specific job) and cost of the stock components and make the customer pay the difference in parts and labor, which is still a win. There’s a lot of variables that come into play. Add to that, that different dealerships charge different labor rates and different labor times for the jobs. It goes on and on and on. Maybe this will give me the push to open my own shop. Who knows?
i would still agree with a repair being denied if an engine were improperly tuned rich/lean with an aftermarket tuner, but if it's not a heat related problem it should be fixed just like any stock bike.
I recently had a screaming eagle tuner installed. I was going to do stage one myself as I am a mechanic. Not motorcycle but heavy equipment all my life. I want the fp5 with the pipes and intake. They told me that they would have to do install with screaming eagle tuner or it would void warranty. So I paid the outrageous price and had them do it. Wish this was out two months ago. Thanks for the info tho. Great clip. Ride often ride safe brother.
When I bought my 2018 Breakout New I had the dealer put a stage 4 117 kit in it with a Power Vision. I was told if something went wrong bring it back to them and it would get fixed. Around 2000 to 3000 miles the engine did not sound right. Took it in and they said it was normal and I needed to run the bike harder. At 5000 the engine let go. The dealer denied my warranty on the engine because of the tuner. I hope with this change it will allow those of us who were denied to get refunded.
This is GREAT NEWS!!!! I’ve been wanting to add a high flow air cleaner and open pipes to my 2021 Heritage Classic 107, but because of the “warranty”, I can’t do that. I’ll also need a tuner, like V&H FuelPak FO4, Dynojet, or maybe even a Thunder Max (definitely not a Screaming Eagle). If this is correct, I don’t have to wait two years to do it!
Good stuff. Had a huge debate with a service rep who said my warranty would be voided if I put slip-ons on ‘22 Softail because the mufflers were catted. I argued that the cats were in the headers. I was right. He was wrong. I put em on anyway. I called the factory to get in writing what I already knew and showed it to him. He had nothing to say.
Yes, last season a dealer service department tech told me (to my face) that I shouldn't use Redline motor oil as it is designed for racing engines only. We had a healthy debate while I called up some technical data on my phone to show him. Those are the morons that need to be held accountable for their arrogance and stupidity.
I'm absolutely relieved this is coming out. I'm going to wait for the notice from Harley. Just so there is no Grey area. Been waiting to go stage 1 on my 2021 FXLRS because of warranty. This is huge!
This has been the legal standard for the rest of the auto / motorsports industry. Still doesn't stop dealers from refusing to install parts you don't buy through them. My dealer will not mount and balance tires you buy through them on wheels you buy from outside HD. It's a way to get around this law. They'll most likely say they can't service non HD parts.
this sounds like it will have huge positive ramifications both in and outside of the motorcycle community. thinking about general right to repair movement, phone repairs, farm equipment etc.
I put on an aftermarket muffler, when I had an issue with the bike I had to put the stock one back on so the can’t say the warranty was voided. This is great news now riders can get parts that are affordable.
i was thinking about getting a new bike next year. Was going to do throw a stage 2 into at the dealer before I even picked up the bike, just so i do not void the warranty. This really changes things.
Ive made a lotnof decisions for up ugrades and mods with the warranty threat in mind, easily into the thousands of dollars. But i have to admit that its also saved me thousands at the same time. I just put a stage IV kit on my bike instead of going with a hammer kit to preserve my warranty. Ive been using the pro street tuner, to preserve my warranty, all SE performance parts.... to preserve my warranty. I love my bike, it performs like a monster, but it definitely cost more than it should and isnt as powerful as it should be. Dynojet powervision callin my name!
Hell yeah this is great I have a 2016 with extended warranty from Harley-Davidson which I have been running all stock where I have a brand new pv tuner I want to install and have been afraid to because of the void your warranty. Don’t want to be on a trip and have a problem. It happened to my buddy in sturgis and the dealer he bought the bike put the tuner on it.
I took my 2020 RGS to the dealer to flash the computer for my WHIM. I had my Power Vision tuner on the bike and they voided my powertrain warranty. Luckily I haven't had any issues but it's saved me money because I've stopped using Harley parts and service since
I am a Harley technician that used to work at a dealership. When we plugged our diagnostic computer to a bike, if it has tuned with an “aftermarket tuner“ the system would automatically flag the Vin of that bike, and void the customers warranty. I remember vividly the first time this happened, and none of us knew about it until it was too late, talk about a pissed customer!
I Bought a 2018 Softail SLim 2 years ago and bought the extended warranty. I brought it in for service a few weeks after my purchase and was told that someone used a tuner on the bike before i owned it and my bike was black listed. it took me 6 months to get the extended warranty back and I was told that nothing was covered on my bike at all..absolutely nuts
Dealerships are too lazy to look things up and give you a real answer so instead they just blow smoke up your azz. Hopefully this will encourage some accountability
Appreciate this. I just received my power vision last month. I decided to say screw the warranty as I drove my bike off the showroom floor last 2 months ago😆😆😆. Now I feel better about it. Plus my bike has a California VIN. So no tunes for my stage 2…… but I have the power vision from Fuel Moto😆😆…..let’s go!!!!!🤘🏾
This is fantastic, I just tuned my 2016 Dyna this spring with an aftermarket pipe( I waited ),I have extended warranty but we don’t have EPA laws in my province, and I prefer an independent shop I trust for other stuff so I’m pretty stoked…As long as they do my engine tuning on the dyno with my powervision(because that’s what they use) than I’ll be solid!
So in other words, HD will go broke and a Chinese company will buy them out within 3 years..... I'm glad I'm not a manufacturer in the US, how do you control the quality of products of other companies??? Unfair and ridiculous. Every manufacturer should have the right to protect their product. None has to upgrade their machine, its your choice and like everything in life, making choices contains risks. I think this is wrong
Fantastic news some dealers are very quick to tell you your warrenty is voided others not so much!! I will say 80% of folks doing a stage one will now go with a VH fuelpack od a dynojet tuner!! Please if you get any more info on this pass it along !! Thanks so much for this info I am going to search this subject!!
I used to work for Harley Davidson, for two years. I bought a 2016 streetbob, used in 2017, with 1700 miles on it. I blew it up 4 days into owning it. Had my shop tear into it and found that it was a flood bike. They bought the bike from auction with a clear title and it “cleared” the techs bill of health. Long story short, the bike was flooded in a garage and claimed on the home owners insurance, so that’s why it get totaled under the motorcycle insurance. So Harley bites the bullet and rebuilds my bike to the tune of $7k that they had to eat. At this point, I purchased the 2 year esp and start doing my normal mods I’d always do….exhaust, intake, tuner, etc…. Fast forward 2 year to the end of my esp. I pull the bike in the shop and have the techs diagnose any problem they could find to get a fresh rebuild. Mind you, I was a member of a 1% club at the time, and during those two years I but 62k hard earned miles on that motor. So the tech comes back to me and says, yes, we’re going to rebuild the motor under warranty due to its flywheel being tight. Now the warranty comers the rebuild with stock parts. Any upgrades I’d have to pay the difference. I opted to upgrade the full cam chest, upgrade the heads, throttle body, better tuner, and a 110 big bore kit. Netting a $1700 out of pocket difference in upgraded parts with my employee discount. Awesome!!!! Here’s where it got scary for me. One of my upgrades before this was an FP3 tuner…techs have to call in corporate big wigs in to inspect the motorcycle to approve or deny the warranty claim. I was told that my tuner was going to void it, changing my out of pocket cost of $1700 to over $7000. I was shitting myself. I couldn’t afford to drop 7k on the bike and it was already disassembled and parts ordered. So fast forward a few weeks of going back and forth with corporate and worrying about the dollar amount… The tech that was doing the work was able to trick the big wigs into not seeing that I had married my tuner to my bike and there work was approved. If I weren’t an employee and friends with the master tech, I would have been screwed. I can’t tell you how often I saw customers get denied warranty work due to stupid little mods or having their bikes serviced at third party locations. It was really sad. I was glad to get away with one and I’m now happy to see that people won’t be getting screwed by Harley anymore.!!!!
This is HUGE!!!!!! I was just about to put in a SE tuner and a new heavy breather, now definitely wait for the final judgement and paperwork. dynojet or FP4 here I come. No more limits
Well thank you for taking the time to inform us of this milestone so now when I buy the new Low Rider S I can get a part from any company that is great. Keep doing you MK peace ✌🏼
They told me to buy their screaming eagle tuner for an intake upgrade. It caused the bike to run lean and burned the valves. When I asked them how to fix it they recommended using an aftermarket tuner. Which is what they advised against to begin with. I wasted five hundred dollars on a tune and tuner that ruined my bike.
That’s really great news ! Now all of us will pay more for the new bikes, parts and service to compensate for those who mess with bad installs of 3 rd party parts. If anyone is thinking this is new expense is coming out of HD pocket…. Guess again. In the case of Westinghouse, I would be surprised that many people mess with tuning generators but Harleys ? I don’t think there is one bike on the road thats all stock & original.
I just want to start off by saying that I in no way, shape or form work for or have any affiliation with Harley but with that said I don't think that's fare to Harley. I mean warranties aren't a given, there a courtesy to there customers to back the product they make in the event that a factory part fails. If you stick some joeblow cam in your bike and it grenades the engine then that's your fault, not Harley's and your warranty should be void. Personally I hope Harley answers back with just not simply offering a warranty at all, then if there part or yours breaks it will be on you either way and then will see who gets the last cry. That or simply don't buy a new bike. People buy new though for the piece of mind knowing that what they bought is covered for a short time, but I don't know where people started getting the notion that Harley or any other thing with a warranty should be responsible for other manufacturer's parts.
Lets get something straight....you STILL cannot use anything that is "FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY" which includes any aftermarket tuner, most exhausts, ALL cams, etc...(THEY ABSOLUTLEY VOID MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY) This is applying ONLY to them try to force HD only parts and labor. This means things like not using HD oil or having your oil changed there...routine maintenance via other shops etc...if you can PROVE you used an EPA APPROVED ON ROAD USE TUNER...then yeah, they cant void your warranty....however the ONLY ON ROAD USE TUNER IS HD's! When you use aftermarket parts, you have to use parts that FULFILL the OEM SPECIFICATION parts quality and use. This applies to things like using a third party part that fullfills ALL OEM Spec's......ie they cant tell you that you have to use a HD Battery, HD Oil, HD Spark Plugs....any third party part that maintains all OEM specs can be used and they cant whack your warranty....anything OUTSIDE OEM SPEC"S (ie performance parts that have no baffle, that bypass EPA specification, etc...) will ABSOLUTELY VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Moss-Magnusen does NOT give you protections for that.
Lots of hd dealers will keep your warranty intact as long as u dont use an aftermarket tuner. U can still get aftermarket pipes, etc. but your tuner just has to be the HD tuner and youre good
@@willyafg Correct...but thats up to the individual dealership (that's not Corporate Harley saying they will warranty it via policy). What I am talking about is what they will be "Legally required" to warranty. If you blow your motor and its due to you running a lean condition while running a 2 into 1 exhaust, and you are at a different dealership...they are NOT going to be required to warranty your motor....they "may" do it, but they wont be forced to.
I agree with RedRider0151. This is an misinterpretation of the ruling and will not cover what most are continuing to hope and comment on (eg aftermarket tuners, cams, full exhaust) to mean. If this were true, the entire automotive motive manufacturer businesses would be held to the same standard and thus go under.
Hopefully the FTC will follow and help out the John Deere owners with their tractors. Agrigultural equipment is crucial for our economy and if a farmer has to pay higher prices to have JD work on their tractors, that added cost is going to trickle down to the consumer!
Which is why I don’t understand why this was needed to begin with. They were always prevented from voiding your warranty without proving that the aftermarket part caused the issue.
The Magnusen-Moss act does NOT APPLY to off-road use parts. In order for the act to be valid, the parts you use have to MATCH OEM SPECS....you cant simply slap a 575 cam in it that is completely different specs than stock and say you have a warranty brudda....
@@redrider0151 EXACTLY. Tuners that violate the prior EPA ruling can't force Harley to warranty parts that are illegal (for on road use) and out of spec. IF that was the case then the EPA could once again sue HD and if they comply with the EPA then the FTC would sue HD. That is totally unfair and illegal.
Yes, I bought a 2021 Fatboy. They told me I couldn't install the pipes and tuner because it would void my warranty. I bought some screaming Eagles pipes, they were better than stock. It pissed me off, Having a Fatboy and riding around sounding like a Honda Shadow.
This Should be a good Fight !! because it was the EPA that FORCED Harley into the Warranty Terms, I'm a Former Harley Warranty Manager, and you can NOT force Harley to warranty other peoples products and the damage to EPA parts
We can only hope that these HD warranty changes will extend outside the USA. In Australia, the motor vehicle lobby is very strong and powerful, eg. in the USA you can do your own oil changes and keep your warranty, in Australia, to keep warranty the oil change has to be done by a qualified mechanic. One thing that needs to be sorted which to me seems unfair in the USA court decision, for example, if you install a super high lift cam and you cook your motor because the stock oil pump/cam plate wasn't designed to circulate enough oil to cool/lubricate the top end of the motor, why should HD be responsible? Likewise, if you use an aftermarket tuner and the motor now produces more power than the motor and other components were designed for, why should HD be responsible for cooking your motor/transmission as a result of these mods? Surely the court decision must have some limitations in this regard. I think the court decision is reasonable in relation to aftermarket tuners that keep power and torque within motor engineering specs because HD inappropriately and unfairly used warranty breaches to protect itself against EPA breaches - which is wrong because it is an uncompetitive practice and warranty is unrelated to EPA.
@@davidvanbrunt4233 Periodical services, including oil changes, do not have to be completed by the dealer, anyone having a mechanic certificate can do it. However, the periodical servicing must be in line with the owner service handbook (you know, can't skip of the list of things that are to completed, otherwise, a motor vehicle manufacturer can worm out of their warranty obligations. What we do have, however, is a consumer guarantee law requirement (things are suppose to last for a reasonable time, even if the warranty is for a shorter time). The reasonable time for a motor vehicle by the Regulator typically considers 9-10 years for a car , so if say, just after 2 years, the motor blows up (and all services were completed in line with the handbook by a qualified mechanic), you can lodge a complaint with the Regulator and request that the motor be repaired under the consumer guarantee (ie. at no cost to you). Of course, vehicle manufacturers will try to say the claim is outside the warranty period but you must stand firm and push the regulatory requirement. I had the front fork tubes on my LR replaced for free outside the 2 year warranty period after I threatened to take HD Australia to the Fair Trading Commissioner because the tubes are suppose to last longer than 2 years, instead of corroding. My LR is garaged inside when not in use and I don't live near the ocean.
Its cool if you have an aftermarket tuner. The best tuner in the game is an ECU though! From what I have heard if you had an issue while having the TMAX ECU you could just swap in your old ECU and it would be good. The damage that an aftermarket tuner could do is incredibly negligible so I'm glad this is happening. Every new Harley I have boughten I just ride completely stock for 2k miles. if anything doesn't happen within the first 2k you're good. from what I have heard this doesn't take effect potentially until late July so be careful with your new whips until this is confirmed!
WOW! Got a brand new Low Rider ST last weekend. Worried about using after market engine guard, as the HD one is on a 15 week backlog, after being told my warrantee would be voided. Thank you for this.
@@jeremiahwalker2303 I'm clear, but this is my first...at my age...EVER new bike. the sales manager said "complete coverage unless you put anything non-Harley on the bike. Figured it wasn't that bad...but still.
I mean if you're going to slap the biggest cam you can on a stock engine or even the biggest cam possible on say a screaming eagle kit and it wastes the engine or another component then I completely agree that you knowingly voided your warranty.
I just bought a 2023 low rider st. They told me i had to use their screaming eagle tuner to keep my warranty, and i couldnt use any exhaust that wasnt California approved
Good for us consumers!!! I would never buy a Harley from a dealer. I've heard that it's quite the experience. Not interested, interested in saving. Most dealers do not tear down motors, they send the heavy work to quality and professional shops.
Not on my Harley, but my Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road had its warranty voided, in writing, for “obvious off road use.” No joke. It says off road on the side.
Tuners will most likely be still off the table because the EPA sued and spanked Harley for installing tuners that were not street legal EPA compliant. Now if the FTC comes in and says "No, you have to warranty those parts that make the bike illegal and will get you fined by the EPA". That puts Harley between a rock and a hard place and isn't likely legal or fair regardless what the FTC says and they will fight it in court.
So...Harley (atleast my 2 local dealerships) has been telling us it was the feds enforcing this warranty void garbage..Now we find out Harleys been making it up?
I’ve took two of my sportsters to Oakland ca Harley both times they returned em with slow oil leaks I peep there hustle make em spend more then they have too get a better job if y’all want money 💯
As soon as my warranty was up I went straight aftermarket (cam, tuner, header pipe). Harley is going to be put in a difficult situation because the EPA regulates on Harley performance, hence why they only warranty SE products in which they make a killing on. In my opinion HD should warranty anything if they perform the work whether aftermarket or not.
HD tappet cuffs are a known weak link for the M8 engine, so installing S&S actually improved the longevity of the motor. Why not instead of voiding the warranty they acknowledge that sumping and bearing failure is due to them.
I voided my Lowrider ST warranty before I even took delivery. Power Vision,S&S 550 cam and S&S Superstreet exhaust. This is welcomed news. Oh, I work at a HD dealership. 🙄
Welp.... I will be voiding my warranty in December (April 2023) with a new tuner... My new tune is NOT going to be EPA compliant.... I don't want Uncle Sam on my business.... this is a double edged sword, I don't care if I don't have to go back to the dealer for service..... That's why we got Eddie... 🤣🤣🤣
Wow better now than never , I did a stage 2 upgrade on my 17 roadking was, told to be on safe side to use there cams as far as warranty concerns which gave the bike a boost but I wanted to use a aaftermarket cams called redshift but here ya go they've been always been on the fence on that subject because there are alot of aftermarket parts that are junk and some people buy alot of cheaper under quality parts not knowing the problems that can occur I cant say I blame harley it could get costly for them think about it but on the other hand they can recommend good products to customers they all do custom builds and they know who's got good products
Actually, you can change the tuner on your Road Glide now if you wish- your factory warranty will be good (6:34 in your video). OEM motorcycle components outside of your powertrain are still covered under your 2 year limited/unlimited mile factory warranty. Harley-Davidson will deny powertrain warranty claims on motorcycles tuned using a tuning product not covered by a California Air and Resources Board Executive Order or not otherwise authorized by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. However, having an aftermarket tuner may get your bike's VIN flagged/blocked. What does that mean? It just means there is a flag on your VIN number that requires all warranty claims against your vehicle to be manually reviewed. Harley‐Davidson has always said (and other manufacturers have as well) that they aren't responsible to pay for repairs of aftermarket parts, or for repairs for the damages and defects caused by those aftermarket parts. That only seems fair to me. Take for instance my car: 2013 Ford Fusion -before Ford added the little LED strip of lights in the headlamps that look really cool. The new, OEM headlamps from Ford that had the LED lights in the headlamps were really expensive, and they weren't "plug and play". So I looked into getting a couple of LED light strips to install on my car -looked simple enough. But, when I asked the independent service shop to install them, they straight up told me that 1) There's always the potential for the lights to be installed wrong and they could end up blowing the whole electrical system; 2) They would not be responsible for any damages done to my car as a result of that installation. And that wasn't the dealer (although my Ford dealership did say the same thing)!! I do not think that any company should be held responsible if you added and/or installed another part that then caused the company's product to fail...
"Under a proposed consent agreement with the agency, the companies will be prohibited from telling customers that their warranties will be voided if they use third-party services or parts, or that they should only use branded parts or authorized service providers. The proposed consent agreement will be opened to public comment for 30 days, after which the FTC will decide whether to make it final." so its not even final?
G'day Marvelkid87 THANKYOU for getting this very important msg out to the Harley Davidson community. Keep these videos coming BUT mostly Keep Living the FUCKING Dream ❗ Safe travels 🙏❣️ 💪🇦🇺💪
Harley is contractually obligated to enforce epa regulation, they were sued by the EPA and as part of the settlement Harley Davidson is required to void your power train warranty for replacing any part that impacts or allows you to change your emissions, like ecu, intake, exhaust, etc. So how will that ruling impact a contractual obligation to the goverment?
I am on my 7th harley, and have never had a warranty, since I only buy used so I could do what I wanted. Now I might get me a new H-D, but it will have to be after the war.
Yeah I took my 2020 street glide in for repair one time and harley kind of brushed me off because when I changed oil I did not use their oil filter pissed me off. Truth is I will never use their oil filter warranty or no warranty my bike my choice.
Great video & thanks for posting. Our local Harley has multiple thick books of 3rd parts they can install to not void a warranty. I recently myself added new slip ons to my 2018 HD softail with an extended warranty. I started to wonder if it would get voided. Also I bought Viking Bag saddle bags for 2021 1200 never installing them. But I was wondering if a 3rd party shop install them with a light re-locator kit if that will void my extended warranty..?
Research the the EPA/HD settlement from 2017. One of the injunctive requirements is: the MoCo will conduct tests on tuner-equipped motorcycles and provide the results to EPA to guarantee that their motorcycles remain in compliance with EPA certification requirements for emissions. I believe the MoCo used this language as a hammer by voiding warranties of bikes that had been modified outside EPA guidelines. How else could they guarantee that their motorcycles remain in compliance with EPA. Anyhow, I hope you are correct, I’ve gotten pretty good at tuning my older scooters withe the V&H tuner. I just picked up a used 2021 Fat Boy that already had a ESP. I look forward to more information on thins topic before I break the EPA rules. They are just one more example of non elected officials running the country.
Maybe bad for the suits. Not the company. The brand is immortal. If some group of suits run it bankrupt someone else will just buy it and run it.

After less than two months of ownership
I returned to my H. D. dealership to add a component that I thought I had to purchase from them, which was expensive.
I just couldn't justify paying over $500 for an oil change and other maintenance that could be done by yourself if you have the service manual.
this was never true even before..you can do your own service theres a spot to log it in your owners manual in the back. you just sign and date etc
It’s only for a flat or damaged rims
@@MrTheDays1 what I had wasn't the extra warranty on tires. It's called Tires for Life and it came with the purchase of my bike last year. When I needed a new rear tire, I found out there's was a small print that states that you must get all maintenence done at the specified mileage. I did the 5k service myself so HD told me my tires for life is void.
@@GrandmasterHobbyist yep marked my 5k on the owners manual.
It's called EXTORTION !!!
I voided my warranty as soon as I took bike home.Harley shops are a rip off and make less power never understood why anybody would put screaming eagle junk on their bike!
Looking forward to what Matt Laidlaw has to say in an upcoming video.
My Harley dealership always took care of me. Waiting for the video now that explains what the warranty actually covers
I’ve been purposely only using H-D parts and tuners. I’m really looking forward to researching the potential to use some 3rd party parts and services. Well done!
Yea I personally use SE parts as well just to be on the safe side and reliability.
I "voided" the warranty before leaving the dealership, but they still honored the warranty work they had to do when the rear head was leaking oil.
Was that recently ?
@@Marvelkid87 No, only had 125 miles on it.
Another informative video, great work. Keep grinding. Your giving info that’s needed to your followers. Many blessings
Always man 👊🏽 I’m here for the community
Thanks for the update. Had to go with the Screaming Eagle Tuner and installed at Las Vegas Harley Davidson to keep the warranty good on my FXLRS...
What a scam.
If you can't beat the flat rate book you must be paralized.
Does Harley have any honest shops left?
Great news maybe Harley will adjust there labor cost, because people will go to the lower shoos to get work done!
Harley has been screwing its customers for a looooong time. They are even lucky to still be in business…..again.
@@VN9001 Exactly. I as the customer shouldn’t know more about my bike than you do as a dealer/service rep!
Harley wanted to charge me $360 to mount tires. I had them done at a Honda shop for $80.
This also opens the door for private shops to do warrantied work. If HD won’t do it, take it local. They’re gonna play ball or they ain’t gettin paid!
this sounds like it will have huge positive ramifications both in and outside of the motorcycle community. thinking about general right to repair movement, phone repairs, farm equipment etc.
I put on an aftermarket muffler, when I had an issue with the bike I had to put the stock one back on so the can’t say the warranty was voided. This is great news now riders can get parts that are affordable.
Playing field leveled! About to go get my Torque and HP numbers up now. Thanks for the info brother
I can’t even get my local HD dealer to cover the foggy gauges that came on the damn bike…
i was thinking about getting a new bike next year. Was going to do throw a stage 2 into at the dealer before I even picked up the bike, just so i do not void the warranty. This really changes things.
me too, 2023 lowrider ST has my name on it if this is true!
Luckily I haven't had any issues but it's saved me money because I've stopped using Harley parts and service since
My engine just blew on my sportster s after installing two bros exhaust this brings me some relief for sure.
Third party did much better work than the approved Harley tech. at the dealership that we are forced to patronize at enormous prices.
I wouldn’t get too exited yet till all the details come out. No final decision will be made for at least 30 days.
That’s why it’s critical for consumers to submit complaints against dealerships for potential fraud to the ftc website
If they have competitive pricing it should not be a problem. If they want to overcharge like they do now they deserve what they get.
So fast forward a few weeks of going back and forth with corporate and worrying about the dollar amount…
The tech that was doing the work was able to trick the big wigs into not seeing that I had married my tuner to my bike and there work was approved.
Bro i saw your eyes open wide just of thinking of adding mad parts to the road glide😂
That's awesome I've held off doing a Stage 1 for that exact reason, I don't want to void my warranty.
Damn that’s big news. I went with the Screamin eagle tuner for this exact reason. Time for something way better. Thanks for this.
They have been violating the law for decades on this. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act
Most people have never heard of the Magnuson - Moss Warranty Act.
I thought it sounded to good to be true. Still good but not as good as I hoped
They have to abide by the Magnussen-Moss warranty act
👍🏽
Woo-hoo I just added some slip-ons to my my ST so this is great to hear now I can go Loco this winter with parts..
Not voided but was told AM exhaust would void my warranty. They haven't done so yet but I haven't need warranty work.
Not even an oil change....ouch that's BS.
@@nevillegreg1 wow....cheers mate !!!
I don't think a engine gard would void your warranty anyway it has nothing to do with really anything about the way the bike performs
That puts Harley between a rock and a hard place and isn't likely legal or fair regardless what the FTC says and they will fight it in court.
so before this law, if you put Avon grips or anything else on your bike the warranty would be no good. is there a certain motor oil you have to use.
So...Harley (atleast my 2 local dealerships) has been telling us it was the feds enforcing this warranty void garbage..Now we find out Harleys been making it up?
Thank you for this info.
I’ve took two of my sportsters to Oakland ca Harley both times they returned em with slow oil leaks I peep there hustle make em spend more then they have too get a better job if y’all want money 💯
ABOUT TIME ,LOTS OF OTHER SHOP GOT BETTER MECHANIC THAT THE DEALERS
😂😂😂😅
So does this mean we can do our own oil changes? and dodge the $500 oil change? And still keep our warranty
Yes
Just got a low rider ST October 2022 an the Harley dealer still told me if I used any tuner besides theirs it would void the warranty.
I was told by several HD dealers that if I did my own service on my bike that it would void the warranty
thats always been a lie.
Man i wonder whats going to happen to those warranties who were voided before this? Is is retroactive?
Wow better now than never , I did a stage 2 upgrade on my 17 roadking was, told to be on safe side to use there cams as far as warranty concerns which gave the bike a boost but I wanted to use a aaftermarket cams called redshift but here ya go they've been always been on the fence on that subject because there are alot of aftermarket parts that are junk and some people buy alot of cheaper under quality parts not knowing the problems that can occur I cant say I blame harley it could get costly for them think about it but on the other hand they can recommend good products to customers they all do custom builds and they know who's got good products
Was told just a week ago I've been red flagged and my warranty is voided due to a Dynojet tuner.
The dealer tried voiding my warranty a few weeks ago, because I used amsoil for my first oil change instead of their Harley brand oil
It just means there is a flag on your VIN number that requires all warranty claims
against your vehicle to be manually reviewed.
The 2 yr warranty really gives most of us only one year due to winter.
Most 🧐 what about the whole west side of the country?? Some of us still ride in 30 degree weather
"if your a warranty killer" none of this matters!!.
great share though!!

Thanks Kid, love your content. Always informative and always entertaining.
Magnuson Moss Act , if warranty is written, then manufacturer needs to follow by federal law
I am on my 7th harley, and have never had a warranty, since I only buy used so I could do what I wanted. Now I might get me a new H-D, but it will have to be after the war.
Your boy is ready to go shopping😎
Great video bro👊
Yeah I took my 2020 street glide in for repair one time and harley kind of brushed me off because when I changed oil I did not use their oil filter pissed me off. Truth is I will never use their oil filter warranty or no warranty my bike my choice.
Heck Yeah! Just think... crap flows downhill so all motorcycle manufacturer will have to follow!
It’s another lawsuit in motion called “Anti Trust” I was jus told at the dealer
Great news. A large number of aftermarket parts are just superior to the H.D. parts. This is good for all of us.
