  • I solve 4 increasingly complex equations that have parentheses. Use the distributive property to remove the parentheses, then solve as before.

    You include x as well. 9x(5-3x) becomes 45x-27x^2.
    (That last term is 27 x squared, because x times x, is x squared, we write x^2.)

    what I like to do if the question gives you answers to choose from (4x+4=13x+4 A:4 B:6 C:3 D:12) I just take the answers an plug them in for x. keep doing that untill you find the correct answer.

    • @MrB4math

      That is not what I would recommend, but there are instances when it would work. With this example you would have a problem, as the correct answer is not listed.

    I'm not sure if you'll see this, but when you're distributing the numbers, if instead of a normal number, you have 9x(5-3x), in that case, would you do the same as before, or would you include x in both answers. So that it would be 45x-27x or just 45-27x?

      +Kevin Morales
      This gives lots of people trouble, so you are not alone. The rules that you mentioned are for multiplication (and division), so I suggest using the word "times" instead of the word "and." So you would have positive times positive = positive, etc. When you get to addition and subtraction, the sign of the answer depends on which number is bigger. If the bigger number is positive, the answer is positive. Like -5 + 12= 7. But if the bigger number is negative, the answer is negative, like -18 + 5 = -13. Again, this gives lots of people trouble. I have a more thorough explanation, and practice worksheets, at my website MrB4math.com. (It's free with no advertisements.) (You will have to type or copy and paste to get there, UA-cam won't let me put a hyperlink.)

      Kevin Morales all i know is...the bigger number gets to call the shot. But, how do you know when to put a subtraction sign or positive sign is the question? Wait.....oh! Yeah thats based of the last big number as well. (Something like that) i think fractions are integers...or i dont remember. I dont remember what you would call the numbers...like 9x. Would 9x be considered an integer or just an algebraic expression? Idk...that is why i cant explain more clearer. How to know??

    Can you please tell me the answer to 6%2(1+2)... That percentage symbol should actually be a divided by symbol but I don't have one on my phone.. So it's 6divided by 2(1+3)... The 2 answers I come up with are 1 and 9... I'm mostly wondering if the parentheses remain as2(3) after the addition has been completed inside of them, so that the 2 has a direct affect on the parentheses leaving me with an answer of 1... Or do the parentheses go away after the addition has been completed inside of them, and then I just answer the question straight across leaving me with an answer of 9..Thanks.

    • @MrB4math

      16/19 can not be simplified, because there is no common factor. You may be thinking of writing it as a mixed number, 1 and 3/19, but that is not required here.

Please don't take offense to that that's the way I see it. I'm a mechanic and it's equal to me asking you what the firing order on a small block chevy engine is. You might have to look it up. I'm not disrespecting you in any way it's just I don't get this stuff. You explained it thorough enough, it's just going to take me some time lol.

      You are not required to proceed left to right. Once the parentheses are gone, you can choose to "get rid of" any one of those four terms. Usually we get rid of a term or coefficient by using the opposite operation.

    What will happen if both sides variable are x and y

    • @MrB4math
      @MrB4math  5 років тому

      Often x and y are used in equations that are "linear equations." Rather than one answer, like x=5 or x=3/7, they have an infinite number of answers. You may be asked to solve for for y, or simply to graph the solutions, for which you would use a line. You may find more help from my website, MrB4math.com, or two other ones (not mine) Purplemath.com, and Patrickjmt.com. Patrickjmt has tons of videos on youtube if that is your preference. I hope this helps.

      In this case there was nothing within the parentheses that you could combine, so by distributing what was in front of the parentheses, you can drop the parentheses. I hope this helps. Mr. B

    Hi, when you finish off the equation at 6:03 why isn't 37 divided by 22 to get 1.68 ? why is it left as a fraction? ...if you did say x=1.68 would it be wrong?

    • @MrB4math
      @MrB4math  5 років тому

      You can probably answer as x=1.68, provided rounding is acceptable. I left it as a fraction because my students were not allowed to use calculators, and they had to work hard enough as it was.

    • @MrB4math
      @MrB4math  5 років тому

      There are times when you can start in a different place, but the answers should always match, because with these equations there is only one correct answer. If you are having troubles with the "equations with parentheses," perhaps you should back up a bit and work on "equations involving more than one step." It's tough to be of more help without seeing what you are doing, perhaps show your work to a tutor or teacher.

    I have a question please on the 7-(4x+5)? Why did you add 1 before the bracket to solve that equation. Please can you explain it further, thanks,

    • @MrB4math
      @MrB4math  6 років тому

      You need to distribute the term in front of the parentheses in order to get rid of the parentheses. If you had 7-3(4x+5), you would distribute a "-3" to each term in the parentheses. Since, in the case you refer to, there is no visible number between the "-" and the parentheses, it is fine to think of the term as a "-1" as you distribute it to each term in the parentheses. I hope this helps.

    You need to understand that the lowest number goes through the equels not the biggest number. If you use smaller number it is easier. And you always get a positive number and you end up with a nice number

    • @MrB4math
      @MrB4math  6 років тому

      It's kind of you to make a suggestion, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by "goes through the equels" [sic]. There is no operation in mathematics such as "goes through equals." The four answers in the video are correct, so if your answers match, your system seems to be working well enough, even if I don't know what you mean. Good luck.
