I restored this gloriously 90s chrome Univega to it's former glory

- This is (I believe) a 1996 Univega Via de Oro.
It was considered a 'hybrid' bike for its time. It's made from pulse welded aluminum and is pretty stinkin' light.
I purchased this bike for less than $100. I had to purchase a new rear wheel as the one on it was beyond repair. I am not a fan of grip shifters so when I converted to a 1x drivetrain I swapped the shifter out for a Shimano Deore trigger shifter.
The handlebar was badly bent on one end. I am fairly certain this bike did not get much use but was rather buried under something heavy in storage. I was able to trim the handlebars and salvage them. Unfortunately the super neat Cane Creek Bar ends could not be saved.
The original cables were in fantastic condition so I just reused them for the brakes. The brake levers would barely move until a little of wd-40 brought them back to like new function.
I've made a few significant changes to the bike since I finished filming. I got higher performance brake levers, wider bars, and a shorter stem, as well as swapping out the crankset with a larger chainring. The bike is technically too large for me (I'm 5'11) but I love the way it rides and it's super comfortable so I have put down quite a few miles on it so far.
Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy my video.

The music, the pacing: ASMR bike repair! 👍
In the 80's had a Miyata that I rode in Philadelphia and Texas. The extra-large frame was a little sluggish, so I had it chrome plated in Texas. That stiffened the frame up and it rode beautifully until it was stolen 1996 in Albuquerque, NM.
I just found this same exact bike at Salvation Army and I feel like I won something special. Thanks for resurrection of this bike !
You truly have my friend. The geometry is fantastic. I'm constantly on the lookout for these old Univegas, they are becoming increasingly harder to find!
Purple pedals were just right. Like the demonstration at the end. Nice touch.
Now that's one beautiful bike!!
I’ve got a Univega aluminium 702 I think exactly the same bike , bought it new only done 35 miles on it still in garage almost as new . Lovely light bike .
Awesome restoration and video 👍
Thank you for the kind words, Donald!
Excellent work! The music, camera work, and of course, the bike were very enjoyable. Liked, subbed, and notified :)
Dude please make more videos this is great content and needs more recognition. Keep it up, my friend :-)
Thank you for the kind words Ethan! I have two more bike build videos in the works, so stay tuned!
Nice job! Bike looks amazing. Thanks for sharing this well made video. Hope to get there. I collect, restore, buy and sell myself and right now own 3 Univegas. Super Strada, Competione and a Super Speciale which I totally restored. I will be entering the Super Speciale at the up coming Eroica California. There's a video about it on my channel.
That Super Speciale is beautiful man!! Well done!! 👏
@@DonylynKnives Thank you. I can't take credit for the paint but I cleaned, polished and reassembled everything else myself. The paint was done at the Bicycle Stand in Long Beach, CA. I had Cyclart do some earlier projects but they have since retired the business.
My friend has a univega mtb.
Hi, what seatpost size? I have same bike.
Great vid! I am planning to restore my Univega Alpina 5.3 from early 90s. I wish to repaint it, but have a hard time trying to contact Univega for a set of stickers. Do you know if they still operate?
I don't believe they do still operate. What most people do in this situation is just have the stickers made by someone with a vinyl cutter (Most sign shops should have them). You can have the stickers made in any size/color fairly inexpensively.
@@DonylynKnives that's a nice piece od advice, I might end up doing that. Thanks!
Definitely not chrome. Just sayin
