I'll try to translate the lyrics kapuseta gave. This in Helsinki slang, so I might not get everything right, 'coz I'm ot origibnally from Helsinki, but I've lived there for 20 yrs now. This slang is maybe the most difficult version of Finnish, because to begin with it was brn as a lingua franca (common language) for Finnish and Swedish kids, when they played together on the block, in the streets. It mixes stuff from Swedish and Finnish mostly, but there's some Russian, later English, and maybe German too. And some meanings have changed, some sound changes have been done i random, at least seemingly. Yet there are certain principles hw certain sounds change, that they sound more slang. The slang version in the song is from 50-80's, though the slang was 1st born in the 19th century when Helsinki grew fast, and especially the Finnish speaking population moved in the city in strong waves. In the beginning of the 19th century the place was still a town, and mstly Swedish speaking. Finland has Swedish speaking minority of about 5-7%, used be more than 10%, and they mostly live in some coastal areas. Helsinki became the capital in 1809, and after that more and more Finnish speakers moved there. Next post I'll put in the translation :)
1st the translation what it roughly means, then I'll have my own fun, and try to change the words so you'd get an impression how odd and difficult the slang sounds for people outside of Helsinki, who speak more closer to the standard Finnish, though many dialects can be very different then the standard. But Helsinki slang (Stadin slangi) is on a different level. It's 'distantly related' to Finnish :) The song: - I'm playin', or dyin'. I'm playin', an' not jus' thinkin'. If the luck is strikin', this business is kickin'. But he won' be playin', who's afearin'. I can move (travel?), away from The City* (*Helsinki). to Gambia or Venezuela. But can't get Sörkka*, out of me. Even when I'm dyin'. (*Sörkka =Sörnäinen, a Helsinki district - like Bronx in NY, or East End in London) I'm playin', or dyin'. I'm playin', an' not jus' thinkin'. If the luck is strikin', the systems are kickin'. But he won' be playin', who's afearin'. So long, I'm hanging aroung here, as the station clock, is in the tower. So long, I'm swingin' (groovin') here, as the tram number seven, rolls on its rails. I'm playin', or dyin'. I'm playin', an' not jus' thinkin'. If the luck is strikin', this business is kickin'. But he won' be playin', who's afearin'. xxx Now, here's how it roughly would sound in English(?), if we compare how 'The Slang' sounds to Finnish ears: - Ah'm sculin'*, or dellin' (even 'dealin' ', from 'dividing, deal, share' in Swedish). Ah'm playin', an' no' jus' reelin'. (*skulaa -> to 'scule', sculing = 'to play music, sports') Iv da chag's strikin', des business is peddin'. Bu' he won' be sculin', who's fearin'. Ah c'n skiggle, wegs from Da Ciddeh* (*Stadi = Helsinki). To Gambia or Venezuela. Bu' can' ge' Seurxs*, weg o' me. Even when Ah'm dellin'. (*Sörkka ('Seurxs') =Sörnäinen, a Helsinki district - like Bronx in NY, or East End in London) Ah'm sculin', or dellin'. Ah'm playin', an' no' jus' reelin'. Iv da chag's strikin', da chyddems'r peddin'. Bu' he won' be sculin', who's fearin'. So long, Ah'm hengin' aroun' here, az da staish clogger, is in da tow'r. So long, Ah'm swengin' (groovin') aroun' here, az da scure sev'ner, rolls on its rails. Ah'm sculin', or dellin'. Ah'm playin', an' no' jus' reelin'. Iv da chag's strikin', des business is peddin'. Bu' he won' be sculin', who's fearin'.
Commenting a year later, a nice translation!. The songs clock in the song means the clocktower located in the central railway station in Helsinki, very well known in Helsinki. The tram number seven is also very known amongst Helsinkians, it's route is a very central one.
