Lorella's channel link - ua-cam.com/channels/RZuBuDX1isSXjs3bE29umA.html Hi Friends, I hope you are all well. Things have been pretty busy around here with canning season kicking into full gear. I went down to my pantry the other day and felt a little concerned at how depleted my stores were getting. Thankfully the garden has produced well this year and I'm starting to fill it back up. I'll post a pantry tour towards the end of the fall. I wish you all wonderful day and I'll see you soon! xx
Little Mountain Ranch I'm excited to see another pantry video! Your original one is what led me to your channel, and inspired me to get more serious about buying in bulk, growing a bigger garden, and building a year+ food store for our large family. Love from PEI ❤
A running theme in your presentations is abundance. I’m being redundant saying that but i feel and see it each time I watch! We have six months longer growing season but take it for granted. The intensity of your short season up there is much greater. The beauty reflects the Creator and makes it even more special and important. Thanks Chelsey.
You are such a talented gardener. The fact that you can feed your large family from your garden is a beautiful thing. And your daughter Kate is such a beautiful young woman who is such a big help to you. I think people who are raised on farms are so much better in the long run. They grow up knowing the value of hard work, making due, being a team player etc. It's parents like you and your husband that are raising the future leader's, and I cant wait to see how things turn out. GOD bless you and the family. With love from Buffalo NY.
What a kind comment, thank you so much. Yes, Kate is amazing and is such a willing helper... that being said, I did pay her that day. 😉 She works for me during the summer until she can drive into town and work there. It works great for both of us.
I always enjoy seeing your garden. It is true that some people underestimate what can be grown in northern climates. I am in eastern Alberta in a zone 3a. My spaghetti squash did great this year. I picked one a few days ago that was almost 9lbs. Our summer has been very cold; my tomatoes are still slowly producing fruit and only a few have ripened so far. This morning Aug30 we got our first light frost. I find every year my garden gets bigger and more productive as my skills improve. Watching channels like yours has helped.
As someone with a developmentally disabled sister....your comments really hit home! Absolutely celebrate who they are and what makes them unique and special. I’m so incredibly proud of my sister.
Your garden looks so awesome, and what a great harvest. So happy to see all is well with y'all. I can't wait to see your pantry tour. Take care my friend, hope to see another video soon. I have missed seeing y'all.
The old farm ladies told me when I first came to the farm to hang my cabbages from the root on the ceiling which saves space for other things and also seems to keep them for a longer time . Because the leaves are not touching anything
❤️ you wouldn’t believe how many times one of us has said to the other, this would make great post back onto Instagram...but we haven’t actually pulled the trigger. We are actually butchering 5 pigs this weekend and just had 14 piglets born earlier this week (all easily, alive and well which was such a blessing!) that we would have loved to share! We really miss the community but aren’t great at not letting it be a time suck for us 🤦🏼♀️
Yes Chelsey I feed all of my spent leaves from my garden to the chicken, sheep and goats. Even the tough roots of the cabbage family I will shake all the soil off of, crush them with a large hammer and feed them to the sheep and goats as well. Not only is it very good for them but it gives them roughage as well. Also you can dehydrate all of those leaves from the cole crops, beets, carrots or any other greens and once they are dehydrated pulverize them in your food processor for storage. You can then use their yummy goodness in soups, stews, stir fries, etc. I have been watching Lorella's channel from before they moved to her parents land and lived in LA. God Bless Joe
Your Potatoes and Cabbages are amazing. I love your harvest. We have had two years of drought and heat here in our region. Great for the tomatoes but not for the root vegetables and cabbages ... Nice greetings
Once you're done harvesting and processing, it would be interesting to see a full tour of your fall pantry and cellar. You can check back on the 'stock' when spring comes, and so forth. Just think about it, maybe a ''stop motion'' of your pantry and cellar over a year, with a picture taken every day 😃
Had great success with peppermint for rodents. Just remember , mice run along edges of things. So really focus on wall edges , boxes , bins etc. Also a must for storage sheds, attics , basements, all kinds (especially rented)..refresh as needed. NAMESTE🙏
Love seeing you stock up your root cellar, our area is to wet. So I am canning like crazy, getting a little tired trying to keep up but happy seeing my pantry filling up. Everything looks so nice beautiful colors!!😄
Yay!! I finally found my headphones and I can watch!!!! I have MISSED watching your videos!! I’ll be watching Lorella’s video!! I love her - I haven’t been able to watch lately, been a little bit busy but I am looming forward to seeing her newest video!! Strawberry rhubarb jam?? Yuuuuummm and cowboy candy!!! 😋- I am so excited to get my peppers growing next year to make cowboy candy!! Your comfrey looks great!! It’s one of my favorites!!! It’s a bone set as well. It will regenerate cells twice as fast as natural. Oh the flowers are amazing!!
Nice looking potatoes! Yum, sauerkraut love that stuff. I don't get it often because the rest of my family can't stand it. You're going to have a full root cellar.
So you make salve with your comfrey? It's such a great plant. Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, a substance that helps new skin cells grow, along with other substances that reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy. Comfrey ointments have been used to heal bruises as well as pulled muscles and ligaments, fractures, sprains, strains, and osteoarthritis.
This year I've started NOT pulling the things that are bolting, assuming I don't need that spot for something else, because I can use the seeds for micro greens when I'm low on greens.
Your garden has given you so much food! Congratulations. It sure feels good when your hard work pays off, doesn’t it? I didn’t know about mint repelling mice. I’ll try it. Harvest your comfrey a few times each summer. Cut it down to the ground and either chop and drop it or add it to your compost. It grows back quickly and vigorously. That gives you multiple amounts of comfrey’s goodness for your garden. Add a bit of sulphur in the fall to prevent scab on your spuds. The sulphur needs time to break down to become available for next year. Sulphur changes the soil Ph to the acid side ( lower than 7 which is neutral)
Such a beautiful garden! If you like dill you should try some of that in your next batch of garlic sauerkraut. It's amazing! I also make a trait with green cabbage, beets and garlic. So good! Thanks for another great video!
Everything looks FANTASTIC my sweet friend!!! So beautiful! So, so happy for you and your wonderful family. Please give everyone big hugs 🤗 from me. Blessings always~ Lisa’s

I’m so glad you’re enjoying my videos.😊 I cut my beets like that for storage because if I don’t they sprout. Fortunately, they seem to dry out enough so they don’t bleed when I cook them. I do leave a longer too for fresh cooking though. ‘See’ you soon.
Try the sourcrout with garlic and Dill I also add cucumbers and zucchini and oh my tastes like Dill pickles yumyum I am picky with it but....this I love love :-)
The weather is really different this year, its been raining here a lot more than usual this year. I wouldn't mind it as much if I weren't building a house. lol :)
So so beautiful. Thank you! As far as the size of the beets, one thing might be being crowded too close to another beet. I've heard that can affect the end size. Another youtube-r takes all kinds of leaves from the garden and dries and crumbles them and uses them in soups, stews, etc. also medicinally. Also flowers and fruit to make vinegars. How do bees survive -30* ?
I dehydrate a ton too, for exactly those purposes. Works so well!! I think you're right about crowding - I didn't do a great job thinning anything this year. As long as the humidity stays low bees can survive even colder temps. We provide a wind break too.
Do you know with all the turnip greens and extra leaves off the cabbages and anything else that’s green if you wash them real well and dehydrate them you can then grind them and make your own green powder to put in your smoothies. You can use lettuce and spinach anything that’s green. I’ve been doing it and it works really well and you know what’s in it you know it’s organic instead of buying green powder from the store and paying mega prices for it .
Just found your channel and love your garden tour. You don't get bothered by the cabbage moth and cabbage maggot. Do you use fertilizer in your garden. Much blessings
Welcome to my channel! No, thankfully we don't have a huge issue with pests in our area. I fertilize my garden with our own cow/horse manure compost and deep mulch. We don't have an issue with slugs here so mulch works well in our area.
If you don’t let house pets in the root cellar you can be generous with powered hot pepper. You will not have a mouse or rat problem at all. My dad had storages with his collection of books. He had pallets on the floor and a lot of powered hot pepper all over the floor. Even though other people in the storage had a mouse problem they would not come in his at all.
Little Mountain Ranch Be careful as once my dad set the jar on top of the open garage door and forgot it was up there. When he closed it, the hot pepper came down in his face. He said lucky he had bottled water in the car to wash his eyes out with.
Your forest garden is dreamy! I noticed the stems/root stock on your cabbage are a lot shorter than last year's harvest. Is it a different variety? I've subscribed to Lorella's channel. Looking forward to seeing her next video.
@@LittleMountainRanch All digits crossed for you! Today's an exciting day in our household. I have the whole gang on board to try our hand at canning peaches AND making soap. Regardless of the outcome, I'm just thrilled that my hubby and kids are willing participants. We've never canned anything before and we've never made soap. Eeek!
I'm not realy sure but I have been told that the realy bumpy and contorted potatos should not be used as seed potatos because they are often that way because of viruses. They should be separated and eaten first and no part of them should be composted or put on garden soil. Not something I know for sure but I don't take the chance.
Because they are going into a root cellar. If I left them on the would sprout early. You do want to leave around an inch on when you boil them fresh so you don’t lose colour.
Silly, but I really miss your pigs :-) We plant mint to deter ants. Whenever I see ants taking over a section of my garden, I transplant a mint or chop up a bunch into the soil in that area
I’m sensitive to histamines so I can’t have sauerkraut or nearly any lactobacillus. So no yogurt or kombucha, citrus etc. 😭 I love those things. Hopefully soon my DAO gene will tolerate it!!! Beautiful harvest!
We are 3 b here I think 3 anyway so we get ya a bit.,...may 24 to usually end of September but this year it was earlier beginning of September.....:-) Thanks for the special needs kids we are language impaired in our family xoxo we understand....
True if I were to cook them right away, but I haven't found that to be the case for root cellar storage. They need to be cut low so they don't rot or sprout - they seem to form a scab of sorts during storage and don't bleed much at all.
We’ve been working on getting out of pigs for the last year, and just a few weeks ago our last one left the ranch. We have tons of reason why we made this choice, but the long and short of it is that we were spreading ourselves too thin and we were at the risk of burnout. I can do a video on this if you’d like?
@@LittleMountainRanch I totally understand burnout. I admire you for taking action on it. I'd be interested in a video on the subject. Even though I now live in a small apt in the city I find myself overdoing my interests. Thanks for your reply. Have a blessed harvest. ❤
I can't get enough of your garden haul videos. It's so satisfying to see the fruits of your labor.

One didn't really grow much and the other decided to start growing 2 weeks ago. I'll update you further in my next video.
I love finding zone 4/3 gardeners! I live in zone 4a and I have trouble finding advice for a shorter growing season.
Welcome!! Any questions you have please don’t hesitate to ask.
Our pole beans tougher there?
Your forest garden is dreamy! I noticed the stems/root stock on your cabbage are a lot shorter than last year's harvest. Is it a different variety? I've subscribed to Lorella's channel. Looking forward to seeing her next video.
Good eye! Yes, and I'm not as happy with these ones. Fingers crossed they store well, which was their selling feature.
Makes sense - and yes, I’m of the mind that if there’s a risk, especially with a large crop, it’s best not to take any chances.
Curious why you cut the top off the beets.Shouldn't you leave a bit on?
Because they are going into a root cellar. If I left them on the would sprout early. You do want to leave around an inch on when you boil them fresh so you don’t lose colour.
Silly, but I really miss your pigs :-)
We plant mint to deter ants. Whenever I see ants taking over a section of my garden, I transplant a mint or chop up a bunch into the soil in that area
I miss the fact I had pretty much 0 waste on my farm. Looking forward to spring when I have my growers again.
I’m sensitive to histamines so I can’t have sauerkraut or nearly any lactobacillus. So no yogurt or kombucha, citrus etc. 😭 I love those things. Hopefully soon my DAO gene will tolerate it!!!
Beautiful harvest!
I'm actually pretty sensitive to it too, especially in sourdough bread, weirdly enough, but my tolerance has been growing. I feel for ya.
Just found your channel 😄! Just wondering why you don't have pigs anymore? Love your harvest!
Welcome!!! It’s been asked a few times so I’ll put up a video this coming up week to answer the question for you.😊
Do you eat wild game? What kind of edible game is there where you live?
New sub 👍❤🇨🇦 Lorella sent me

In the description box and also in the pinned comment.😊
you're beets are going to bleed out all the color by cutting the greens off that short fyi
True if I were to cook them right away, but I haven't found that to be the case for root cellar storage. They need to be cut low so they don't rot or sprout - they seem to form a scab of sorts during storage and don't bleed much at all.
Cowboy Candy?
Candied Jalapeños - so good!
No more pigs!?! What happened? Wasn't that one of your $$$ raisers?
We’ve been working on getting out of pigs for the last year, and just a few weeks ago our last one left the ranch. We have tons of reason why we made this choice, but the long and short of it is that we were spreading ourselves too thin and we were at the risk of burnout. I can do a video on this if you’d like?
@@LittleMountainRanch I totally understand burnout. I admire you for taking action on it. I'd be interested in a video on the subject. Even though I now live in a small apt in the city I find myself overdoing my interests. Thanks for your reply. Have a blessed harvest. ❤
