      @@sushma8080 Discrete in the sense..... an integral multiple of 4.9 (here if you notice in the graph the current drops at 4.9 and then again at 4.9 x 2 = 9.8 so current can drop only at integral multiple of 4.9 that is 4.9, 9. 8, 14.4,19.2 etc and not like 1.2 X 4.9 or 2.3 X 4.9) an electron can stay in integral values of fixed energy levels( which is 4.9 in this case)

      Election attained the higher energy level so they are stable at that moment. When they were stable then atom stops to emit electron. So current fall down...

      Franck and Hertz noted in their first paper that the 4.9 eV characteristic energy of their experiment corresponded well to one of the wavelengths of light emitted by mercury atoms in gas discharges. They were using a quantum relationship between the energy of excitation and the corresponding wavelength of light, which they broadly attributed to Johannes Stark and to Arnold Sommerfeld; it predicts that 4.9 eV corresponds to light with a 254 nm wavelength.[2] The same relationship was also incorporated in Einstein's 1905 photon theory of the photoelectric effect.[12]

      All the peaks is corresponding to 1st excited state, not other higher state. Because the difference between two successive peaks is 4.9ev(i.e, 9.8-4.9=4.9,,, 14.7-9.8=4.9) which is the value of 1st excited state of Hg. The concept is that if at 4.9ev , one atom of Hg is excited in 1st excited state , then at 9.8ev , two atom of Hg is excited in 1st excited state (4.9+4.9=9.8) ( not one atom in 2nd Or higher energy state) and so on.
