Gomez was a great competitor, reaching as high as #4 in 1990 when he won the French Open knocking out a strong, young and favorite Andre Agassi!! But he lacked confidence in his game, which was very powerful, and true desire to win. Didn’t spend enough time training and, as time went on, it showed in his performance.
Oh, wow! I was just telling a friend of mine the other day that I was in DC for a work conference and we got there on the Sunday night that this final was supposed to be played. It was rained out and played on a Monday, so I skipped out on the meetings and took a bus to the venue, bought a ticket and watched this match in person
This ended a very unlucky drought of nearly 4 years...'85 through '87 w/no title wins. There were some injuries along the way that impeded him, but some losses that were hard to explain (Christo Van Rensburg? really???). Probably a crisis of confidence as well, w/some of those losses. Also he had problems finding a suitable replacement of his old steel racket I think. He had a bit odd favorites there, apparantly prince mono was what he really desired :))
