Could Lake Victoria's water hyacinth invasion have a silver lining?

  • For decades, water hyacinth has been wreaking havoc on Lake Victoria in Kenya, covering vast swathes of its surface. The plant blocks out light, dramatically reducing the amount of oxygen in the lake and killing off fish. It also makes access to the open lake increasingly difficult for fishermen. But locals are looking at new ways to use the plant and make a profit from it. Our France 2 colleagues Marc de Chalvron and Baptiste Rimbert report, with FRANCE 24's Wassim Cornet.

Hi, you can eat it, feed it to livestock like pigs, chickens, goats and also use it for fertilizer, it works great

It hasn't cut down on the number of fish, that's the people harvesting irresponsible and polluting the water ways.

Everybody giving them suggestions on how to use it, lol, what's lacking in Africa is motivation to fix their issues.
In Asia they tackled this problem. They feed it to livestock, make handbags with it, make it fertilizer.
The man in the video said they needed help. No they don't, all they have to do is get in the water, take it out, and start using it for many purposes.

No but it can become compost. Excellent compost. Some animals will eat it.

The hyacinth plant is filtering the water. Purifying it. And it is also replenishing ecosystems- creating more areas for fish and wildlife to flourish. All is all. It is a good thing. Just find a way to keep a path open. In time. You all can live together in peace.

@jan viljoen True but the problem can be managed. Make use of it as compost, fertilizer or animal feeds
