It impressed us because we hardly knew anything about your country. In retrospect I realized that he was also criticizing the Indian government for not establishing diplomatic ties with Israel.

This is really very informative. Over the years, the relationship between India and Israel has certainly improved, but India still has a warm connection with Palestine. It is certainly not an easy job, but it was never one. Very few countries share a warm relationship with both countries and you have rightfully described the balanced relationship. Today's India has a voice and it does not belong to an exclusive club.
