A Four Watt Amp with Plenty of Headroom! Silktone Micronaut - Secret Weapons Demo & Review

- I am a massive fan of low wattage amps. Across my seven amps here in the studio all but two of them are five watts or under. Single-ended, line level out capable amps can be a wonderfully flexible piece of home recording magic both in terms of being able to crank a low wattage amp without fear of reprisal from the house down the street but also as a stand alone direct recording solution. The Micronaut has that same appeal but brings some extra magic. Namely in the form of much better clean headroom than most similarly sized amps and a more nuanced and natural feeling direct output. So let's mic up the Micronaut with an AEA Ribbon Mic, run direct, and see what this little amp is capable of.

I'm pretty shocked by how much articulation this thing has, definitely dig the ambient sounds
Really enjoyed that intro tune! This thing sounds great 🤘
Oooh, I’ve been looking for a mini. This might be it. Silktone always killing it.
pretty neat little amp. great review!
Loved that lead tone
DRV-low wattage-ribbon mic. It just sits right.
The low to mid gain tones really shine in this!
Track is very reminiscent of the Alchemy Index, great playing and tone
Haha I was kind of thinking Anberlin as I was getting to the end of it but we absolutely take Thrice comparisons.
This got me to subscribe love your stuff dude
What a beautiful little amplifier Mark. I wonder if they will be available in Europe in the near future. Super intro BTW!
You'd have to check w Silktone about it. It's a great little amp though.
@@markjohnstonofficial I'll need to get in touch with your mate Charles!
Thanks for the video! thoughts between the Silktone Micronaut and Milkman's The Amp Pedal 50? In either case I will be using IRs/Ox Stomp downstream from the direct outs for recording. Thanks!
He taps too. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Only rarely and only poorly. but it's gotta make an appearance occasionally.
Hi Mark! On the DI portion where you using a built on cab sim on the Iridium or one you loaded? If the latter, which one? It sounded spectacular and very much like the amp in the room earlier I the video. Thanks!
Super vibey intro piece - loved it. The mixwave drums sound nice but maybe slightly less..."real?"/organic? compared to GGD you usually use. Not sure if that's down to the software or if your process for programming them differed slightly from your usual in some way.
Either way thats besides the point - this seems like a really cool little amp. Big fan of the clean/clean-ish tones and the touch responsiveness is impressive, not as big a fan of the high gain tones - which to me seemed to kinda fizz out and get the tiniest bit harsh on the top end. Love the format of these demos though man so we can hear it at different gain stages and pickup combos. Thanks for this one!
I’d agree with the less organic feel of the mix wave drums but I’ll chalk that up currently to that I was on kind of a time crunch so I pulled up one of the factory sounds and only mildly tweaked it. Didn’t do any of my usual post processing
@@markjohnstonofficial Definitely fair! Like the sizzle in the snare though. With GGD i find i like to dial in a really nice deep snare sound but hear a snare sound like this with more high end sizzle and decay and makes me wanna experiment!
Have you tried the Palmer Eins? Really affordable low-wattage offering
I have not but it’s on my list now
Try the matchless sc mini!
Trust me if they were still being made I would be chasing one down. I love what Ive heard from that amp.
@@markjohnstonofficial me too …
We as guitar players or at least some are fascinated with tiny amps that sound huge, lol. Am I right or no?
Sheeesh
🔬🤘👍🏿
Being honest here… I don’t hear anything that makes this stand out. Then I looked up the price… hard pass
right?? 1k USD for this shit lol
I have to agree. The concept seems super cool and I got really excited about it coz I'm looking for something like this but I've watched 3 demos and I don't hear anything special. These guys doing the demos aren't doing it any favors either. Bland.
Agreed. One thousand dollars for this hahaha!
Why 7? You must have no woman.
