    Car window edges work great if you're car-camping. Love me some SCHF9! I use my great granddad's 100 year old butcher's steel for that "shaving sharp" hone... finish it off w/ a strop edge, (yes, like a stone edge), and she's sweeet! Thanks for all your work. You save us all a lot of time and stitches!

    You were using the words honing and shaprening as if they were the same... honing just realigns your Edge while sharpening takes off steel

      You where using a hone or steel to sharpen a knife that's completely different from sharpening. If my knife was completely dull that would not sharpen it. Just like that wouldn't sharpen most super steels even if they are relatively sharp.

      If you’re going to copy and paste from a dictionary, you should at least take the time to reformat it so that it’s casually readable. On the other hand, if you’re going to copy and paste from a dictionary, you should probably stop right there. Especially if most of the relevant parts of the definition defeat the point you’re trying to prove. The fact is that in the world of knives, sharpening and honing are not the same thing. "Sharpening" is when you take something that is essentially not sharp and you make it sharp. "Honing" is when you take something that is essentially already sharp and you fine-tune that existing sharpness. You might not like being called out on your erroneous choice of words, but this is reality and if you ask twenty different successful blade makers about this, you’ll find out real quick that your ugly copy-and-paste only made you look worse.

      I worked as a butcher for a long time, there is a difference between a sharpening steel and a honing steel. A sharpening steel acts more like a metal file, whereas a honing steel is very smooth with microscopic lines running from the handle to the tip all the way around. The honing steel is definitely for realigning the edge. But the sharpening steel acts just like a sharpening stone. It actually cuts away the metal..

    If I'm not mistaken, the angle is from the flat of the blade, not the primary grind. So in order to use the actual angle you calculated, you would have to rest the flat of the blade on the wedge. Using the grind on the wedge would result in a different angle, although it is still consistent.

    Honestly been a chef for over 10 years, buy a good quality steel, in steel and you will keep your knifes sharp enough for any survival situation. Diamond and ceramic can be a bit harsh and often if you drop them they will crack or shatter. A traditional steel could also be used as a blunt weapon, great for hitting fish over the head.

  • @MickyMouseLimited
    @MickyMouseLimited 7 років тому +2

    Nice video but i would add sharpening knife in to a second knife. This usually works really fast as long as you have a 90 degrees spine on the knife that you use a sharpening tool. There is in general a big disadvantage of sharpening by hand . I am talking from my personal experience. After free hand sharpening a knife the angle on the edge could be lost and later when you resharpen with a machine you will need to do a lot more grinding to establish the edge again. I believe that haven a bigger angle on the field knife edge its probably the best solution because it will stay sharpe longer and the knife will be useful.
    Can you please make a video with your favorite sharpening tool for your knife . This will be good to see since your knife comes with D2 steel.
    Best Regards
    Alex

    I'm looking at 2 knives- bear grylls ultimate pro, shrade extreme survival knife schf9 and Ka-Bar BK2- I'm finding it hard to decide and mainly watching your videos. i like how the Ultimate Pro has many features including a KNIFE SHARPENER and thats why i have come to this video as the schf9 is maybe a better option for bushcraft and survival knife for a good price(and the schf9 and BK2 does not include a sharpener). what sharpener is best for sharpening the schf9 and in your honest opinion, for bushcraft, survival, and price what knife is better. also what knife has a sharper blade which keeps and edge. ( if there are any other knives you may prefer for the job please reply) thx

    Hey, I am looking for a small light weight field sharpener that I can just throw in a pocket and sharpen my knives easily without worry of wrecking the blade. • @survivalprepper373
    @survivalprepper373 7 років тому

    The cheapest way to sharpen a recurve blade goes like this:
    First I sharpen the edge with a fine Siliziumkarbid grit-paper wrapped around a finger thick round woodstick.
    Then I polish the edge to razorsharpness with with a metal polish paste on another sthick with a piece of leather on it.
    These easily homemade sharpen tools are working great, especially on Schrade SCHF 9!
    The same method with flat sticks works also great on normal flat knives too!

    The wedge method will give an incorrect angle, as you’re basing it off a flat side, when the actual edge angle is quite different. Use sharpie on edge and increase angle gently until you’re just taking off all of the ink. That is then the correct angle
