ZF recommands only, but is not obliging anyone to do this procdure. In the Maintenance Manual of Jeep Grand cherokee is written that the oil has NOT to be changed during the entire life of the car. After asking at the dealership in Hamburg, how many kilometers or years is that LIFE TIME OF THE CAR, nobody could answer to me. So do not trust any car manufacturer, just respect the rules and recommendations of the OEM of the equipment and you can save a lot of money. ZF recommends only to change the furst oil at 80-120.000 km, which is ca. 4,5 liter out of 8,8 in the complete system. After that it has to be refreshed every 50-60.000 km.No flushes or exchanges of the entire oil in the system are required. Once your car has a bypass valve, you need to perform the after the first fill the temp increasing to 75 degrees Celsius and than to wait to cool it down to 35-50, than you can perform the second part with the refill of the rest and moving the different gears. All this I did already alone on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016 WK2 and after 10.000 km I am going to perform it again.
Is the transmission filter in the oil tray? how do we get all the oil out of the transmission and cooling area beyond the cooling bypass? Thank you. Best explanation so far.
The only way to get all oil out is by flushing - but I have not found procedure for flushing from manufacturer (ZF) of this transmission. This video is based on manufacturer recommended procedure - so I would just follow what they recommend. If really worry about keeping transmission oil cleaner - I would just recommend to change it a it sooner than recommended. Great informative video. ZF procedure has a step to overfill the transmission with 0.5lt of fluid, driving the car until the transmission temp gets to 75 degrees to open up the valve for cooling. The procedure after that is what you have done with maintaining the revs at 2000rpm and shifting through gears etc... I haven’t seen that step carried out, is that not necessary?

I did already this on my Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2. ZF recommands after the 1 refresh to perfor this procdure every 50-60.000 km.
So after replacing the pan, you fill it till it starts spilling out, then run it through all the gears, and then once it hits the desired temperature, fill it again till it starts spilling out a second time? Is that correct?
Second fill once filled let it spill to it comes to a drizzle and them reboot. Always good to check again the next day . I took to a shop that “knew how to do it “ said they donenmany times . This is what the procedure from manufacturer ZF says. They want to make sure you have proper level of fluid. If temp is lower - you might end-up with more fluid in trans, if you temp is higher when you are adding fluid - you might end-up with below what is required

Hello I own a 08 BMW X5 premium sport 4.8i. I purchased with 96,536. It now has 102,000 miles. The transmission now bangs from a slow start 1 into 2. Had the dealer check the transmission for $ 163.63 and was reported no leaks, no codes, and fluid at proper level. They said the fluid had a very bad burnt smell, and I should just replace the transmission at $ 8, 958.44. Really lol. First of all thank you for the video, I said to them let’s do the basics first lol. If I need a transmission after the basic, it will be a used one.
Sometimes that could be normal, normally on a cold start it will be a rougher shifter from 1-2. Secondly. sometimes you will get a rough 1-2 shift if you are driving slow speeds, and let off the gas AS the car was about to upshift.
NewRoad Adventures, hello there. I’m going to wait till the weather is warm here in Boston. I’ll put the x5 up on its wheels and drain it, replace all sleeves, and rebuild the Valve body. I’ll do the basics first before I purchase a transmission. Auto zone has 3 year warranty on there ZF’s 🤔 lol.
Of course they will ask you for your money, for what are they working for_😂. A friend of mine did not change the fluid, as the manual says and at 175.000 km the frictions on the 4th, 5th and 6th gear were gone. Now the repair would cost him ca. 6.000 USD. Guess who is ging to pay that money....😮
What about the transmission fluid that goes thru the cooler? It is still in the pipes no? How to flush that fluid? Unless the fluid temperature exceed the bypass valve and flush when you add up fluid??? Just asking.
The procedure in this video is from trans manufacturer ZF, so I guess they don't expect all of it out. I just follow their procedure since they know the best. I know that there are couple litters of old fluid left, but if they don't recommend to flush it - so I won't worry about it.
@@NewRoad so old trany oil stuck in the coolant system contaminates new oil. Doesn't seem logical from ZF. Unless there is a way to force the bypass valve to open and force all the oil to get flushed.
@@erickcouvrette1385 I understand and agree with your point, but decided to follow ZF procedure. Mind you, BMW does not even recommend to change trans oil - they say it is lifetime... lol
Maybe if you empty all the fluid conventionally when you perform the fill procedure at the specified temperature range, it doesn't fill the cooler lines. Not sure. But something to think about...

I was nervous about running my car on jacks and refilling, but was able to get almost 5 quarts back in, which is roughly the amount that came out when I drained. My car has 80K on it and the fluid that came out was maybe a shade or two darker than the new fluid I put in. There were no error codes after service and car continues to un great. I am posting for other Giulia owners to hopefully find and use.
@@NewRoad thanks, I have been experiencing some weird progressive charging noise when I accelerate abruptly either from O or while in highway. I will give maintenance to the transmission to discard any lack of transmission fluid or filter being clogged.
One note... i believe you are supposed to remove and install the transmission pan bolts in the same specific pattern, not just going one by one around the pan. ZF mentions something about removing bolts in a cross pattern.
It is not as important as when installing new, and I don't think anybody would completely remove bolts just going around because pan would tilt and get oil all over. First pass is to loosen them and then remove in cross pattern - not necessarily exactly as my photo show when installing new.
@@NewRoad I thought the reason they wanted it to be removed in a similar manner to installation is just so the metal doesn’t get warped. I just remember seeing something specifically saying “remove in a cross pattern” on the ZF transmission repair guide.
I would highly recommend to change it - these are not expensive comparing to the work that you do. Check rockauto.com and FCP Euro sites for good price
Yes it does and some pans come with the ability to just change out the filter on the next oil change for the Tran. (Remember zf recommends to change it every 50kmi) a lot of aftermarket oil pans don’t have a good rubber seal on 3:36 so a harbor freight kit seal should have a better fit
The only way to safely empty those components is to remove the return pipe from the oil cooler at the trans union , and then pump into the trans refill hole with a sealed filling attachment . You pump ( between 8 and 9 litres ) into the trans until clean oil appears out of the cooler return . Of course the system will be totally full now , so a litre or so may then spill from the filler even though you now start the engine , with cooler re-attached and filler hole open once the engine starts up . The procedure in this video is good for about 4.6 litre . If you open the cooler return pipe after draining the pan , about another 1.5 litre can slowly drain an air will be sucked into the cooler pipe as the oil moves under gravity , but it's hit and miss on this one . I got 6 litre out with his latter method , which is quite enough to be honest . I had 100,000km of easy highway driving on a X5 and the oil was only tea coloured , but otherwise fine looking . System pulls a little better with more noticeable hold on hill decent in M3 and M4 gears . Auto geardown on idle up to intersections is a better hold . Didn't pull the old pan apart , but the flow rate would be better with the new filter , which does help with funtionality . Not much debris on the magnets . The boxes are well constructed and have few problems in normal use . You can of course do a double flush and drain off the new mix after a week of mixing around in the system and refill with another 4.6 or so if you don't want to remove cooler pipe union . You'll use 9 litres in all , but ditch 4.6/9th of your original new oil from the previous week . There are several approaches to what to do ...............
I followed ZF procedure for transmissions in description. If you want to completely flush, I guess you will have to repeat procedure after driving for a bit.
@@kd2833 yeah bought the official ZF kit with 7 liters of oil. My trans ended up taking 5,5 liters with car running and going through the gears with 10s within each gear. Trans is 8HP45 on a F30 335i

So I've done the 1st fill and the car's within the temp range, but I can only shift into reverse, 1st, and 2nd. I can't shift to 3rd - 8th gear. Any help would be awesome!
@@NewRoad I tried that initially, but I had it hooked up to ISTA+ and even though it displays the next gear, it doesn't actually shift into subsequent gears (it stayed in 2nd).
@NewRoad Adventures If I shift and hold to the rear, it displays M3, M4, etc. (in manual), but in ISTA it reflects that it's still in 2nd. ISTA also reflects the current gear accurately when I shift from park to 1st, 2nd, and reverse, but stays at 2nd when doing the shift and hold-to-the-rear combo. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with my car or if it's just the way it is... I emailed the dealership, so I'll post here what they reply with. Hopefully it's nothing.
Ok, I figured it out. Sorry for the confusion. If you are not using ISTA+ or ISTA-D, then follow ZF's procedure (same as yours, FCP Euro's, etc.). For a BMW and if you're using ISTA+/ISTA-D, then there's a procedure for it: Once connected, Vehicle Management > Service Functions > Power Train > Transmission Control Unit 8HPTU > Oil Balancing, and follow procedure. (I'm using ISTA+ v.4.22.2)
I believe Satan himself designed this transmission in the deepest point of the pits of hell, because there is no other explaination of why they made the whole process so annoyingly complicated for a rather simple job.
Make sure you turn off your traction control on your Dodge ram. All four wheels should be off the ground when running the transmission through its Gears and making sure you do not go over the specified transmission temperature

@@warR24 Agree, if you can do it yourself - it is not that expensive and you eliminate one possible cause.
@@NewRoad awesome man, thanks for your attention
One note... i believe you are supposed to remove and install the transmission pan bolts in the same specific pattern, not just going one by one around the pan.
@@CFG39 The metal is a lot stronger than the plastic pan.
Sorry for the question. What can happen if fill plug is not loosen before draining oil?
If you drain the fluid - but will not be able to undo fill plug... then you cannot drive to mechanical shop to help you out to unscrew the plug.
What if i didn't change the pan & filter .. I want to drain and refill only ?
I would highly recommend to change it - these are not expensive comparing to the work that you do. Check rockauto.com and FCP Euro sites for good price
You should flush 15 liters of fluid through the transmission performing the ZF instructions between each flushing.
Do you have a link to the ZF instructions?
This isn't a flushing.
Do you keep the brakes pressed or do you spin the wheels when doing the gear shifts?
Brake stays pressed.
Awesome video, loved the addition of visuals for torque specs, etc. Thank you.
Very welcome!
Are you saying that the replacement pan has an integral fluid filter build in?
Yes it does and some pans come with the ability to just change out the filter on the next oil change for the Tran. (Remember zf recommends to change it every 50kmi) a lot of aftermarket oil pans don’t have a good rubber seal on 3:36 so a harbor freight kit seal should have a better fit
It is very helpful guys thanks for your sharing
Glad it was helpful!
What about the oil from the torque converter and the oil from the cooling pipes? You didnt drain them.
I followed ZF procedure - they don't have it. I guess if you completely change - then you can drive a bit longer than ZF recommend.
What about the fluid in the cooler?
I followed ZF procedure for transmissions in description. If you want to completely flush, I guess you will have to repeat procedure after driving for a bit.
Or pull one of the lines and connect a tube and crank the engine a bit to pump out the old fluid?
@@tonydesanto3238 I wouldn't stick with manufacturer procedure :-). I would rather change it more frequently, perhaps every 75,000-80,000 thousand
Awesome video
Thank you!
Thank you
You're welcome
Nice video ! Ttx
How much fluid did it take back (final fill)?
if u buy 5 liters ur good, 4 + going in
@@kd2833 yeah bought the official ZF kit with 7 liters of oil. My trans ended up taking 5,5 liters with car running and going through the gears with 10s within each gear. Trans is 8HP45 on a F30 335i
Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I have one question though after completing the oil change my speedometer is off by like 20 mph. Do you have any idea why that would be? I have a 2016 bmw 340ix with a zf 8 speed. Do I need to reset something? Thanks in advance for any help.
You don't need to reset anything. Just wondering if something is wrong with speedometer sensor...
Did you fix this? What was the cause?
What happen with your issue?
when i finally check the oil level what gear must be used?
Leave it in P
So I've done the 1st fill and the car's within the temp range, but I can only shift into reverse, 1st, and 2nd. I can't shift to 3rd - 8th gear. Any help would be awesome!
When you pull stick to shift - hold it so it doesn't go back, then let go and pull right away and hold it for next one for 10 seconds
@@NewRoad I tried that initially, but I had it hooked up to ISTA+ and even though it displays the next gear, it doesn't actually shift into subsequent gears (it stayed in 2nd).
@@bravo09010901 I didn't use ISTA+ but was able to shift. Did you do in manual mode?
For a BMW and if you're using ISTA+/ISTA-D, then there's a procedure for it:
Once connected, Vehicle Management > Service Functions > Power Train > Transmission Control Unit 8HPTU > Oil Balancing, and follow procedure. (I'm using ISTA+ v.4.22.2)
Very thorough 👍
Really nice video
Thank you
I believe Satan himself designed this transmission in the deepest point of the pits of hell, because there is no other explaination of why they made the whole process so annoyingly complicated for a rather simple job.
agree, the process is not straight forward unfortunately, but it you follow instructions - it's fine
Great video 👌
Thanks 👍
Nice tutorial, thanks. I have to do it in my Ram truck this summer.
Good luck with the project!
Make sure you turn off your traction control on your Dodge ram. All four wheels should be off the ground when running the transmission through its Gears and making sure you do not go over the specified transmission temperature
