Would you rather have a big cinema camera or fully rig out your DSLR or Mirrorless camera into a cinema rig? That way you still have a small light mirrorless camera for gimbal work and photography if you want.
Hard question, if I had to choose only one system I'd go modern classic cinema form factor like Alexa Mini - perfect balance between weight & modularity. But if it's down to certain shots like top-down or specialty mounted work I'd go DSLR Formfactor like Blackmagic Pocket 4K - reducing the amount safety precautions, cost & time for rigging. I think the system you've bought is a perfect middle ground between easy, automated, lightweight & modular, robust, performant. Just recently tried an fX6 and was amazed how compact the system is and how flexible you can use it. And I've even tried the focus automation, it works! Wow...
Im maybe spoilt but I have FX6 as a main camera for shoulder rig handheld or tripod work and a A7M4 for anything gimbal or run and gun. I would say before I got use of an FX6 the A7 was great but I found I was rigging it to look more like a cine camera which was a bit dumb looking back at it as I was taking away the advantages of a small camera to make it look more pro. They are tools I find it's best to have the right tool for the job in hand no mater if a mechnic or a DoP. The other mistake I made was waiting until I had all the kit I thought I needed before I really started shooting. It doesn't matter what you shoot with ... just film for fun, this are the practical skills you are working on.
The final stage of evolution in the Chadian Smith rig building saga, lol. I've gotten a ton of value from your builds, especially through lockdown, but respect man!
The final evolution! 😂 Finally got my Magikarp to turn into a Gyarados! Thanks for the support man, hopefully you've been able to rig out your camera through the lockdown some.
I don't know what it is about rig videos but I just can't stop watching them and yours's are some of the best! I've even shot a couple myself. This rig looks amazing! Not quite ready for a beast like that yet. Staying FX3 for the foreseeable future.
yeah, I love watching other rig videos as well! I just checked out yours on the A7c, good stuff! I really like all the turntable shots-I still need to buy one of those haha! And yes, the FX3 is a great camera that produces nearly the same image as the FX6!
Shooting fast in sunlight at 24 fps shooting native iso in s-log and you'll need the matte box for added ND filters. The 7 stop internal ND isn't enough.
Thanks dude! Yeah, the FX6 is a really solid camera, definitely worth it for a full frame cinema camera. Mine was on backorder for 6 months though, so if you do wanna get one, it's gonna take a while!
heck yeah! the smaller v-mount looks really sleek on it, I love it! When I know I'm gonna be shooting longer or hooking up a ton of accessories I usually run one of my larger batteries.
My man's got dual monitors on his camera. Kinda dope, but anyway, I'm not sure why but I really enjoy these videos. I don't think I'll ever use the information, but I find it really interesting. Thanks man!
haha! Yeah, most of the rigs I've used and seen have dual monitors cause you typically need one dedicated just for camera settings. Well, I'm glad you're here and watching even if you'll never use the info! Maybe someday it'll come in handy 🤷♂️

Heck yeah, you could definitely do a very similar setup with the FS5! I think the prices on FS5 cages have come down too since they’ve been out a while now.
Thanks! Unfortunately this top handle won’t work on the FS5ii. It’s specifically designed for the FX6 cage. Unless the holes on top of the FS5 are in the exact same spot, but I don’t believe they are
Can you explain how you connect the Athomos ninja V and if it’s possible to recording in a Athomos SSD or another brand with the adapter. Also if it’s possible recording external way and internal with CF EXPRESS TYPE A at the same time. I would really appreciate the answer.
Great video. What is the link for the wire you are running from the dtap to monitor? the exact name of that wire that plugs into the atomos battery/plug
To have a setup that allows for hot swapping batteries, Tilta's design is clunky since it requires two rods (yuck). I ended up switching to Shape WLB top plate and their V Mount plate which comes with a voltage regulator. Now I have hot swap capability w/o dealing with rods.
I have a question ok so I have a Rokionon or whatever cine lens (85mm) I bought for a canon. I heard you say something about a adapter? What would I need to buy for my Sony Fx6 to be able to use my Rokonion cine 85 lens on the fx6? Lol please! Can not seem To find anything about it on Google or anywhere
😂😅 Well, I mean $6,000 just for the camera body was still A LOT to me. But yeah, all of the accessories definitely add up quickly. Luckily, I already owned most of the parts I used to rig it out from previous rig builds. Thanks for watching and have fun shooting!
Nice setup, good idea's. I already bought some other brands, so I have to see how I can mix somethings. Monitor in the middle is very nice. And I want to feel balance when I hold the cam on the top bar. I hope soon someone reverse engineers an XLR port. Just one would save my day.
Just got this camera about 2 months ago....have YET to rig it out. Thanks so much for this video. About how many hours would you say the smaller v-mount battery last?
Hey Chadwin, great video. I have a question about the FX6. I noticed you kept the stock monitor on the build, can you not feed the on screen menu's to the external monitor? I use the older FS7's and FS5's all the time and you can do it with both of them, I was just wondering if Sony got rid of that option in the new cameras or if its just a personal preference thing?
Yeah, you can actually still get all of the Sony OSD via HDMI info display out. The main reason I’m not doing it that way is so I don’t have to turn the display info on and off every time I wanna change settings, and since I’m recording externally on the ninja v I don’t wanna accidentally bake in any of the OSD settings. It works the same as the FS5 and FS7 I use at work!
@@chadwin ah makes sense man, I was a little worried sony got rid of that feature since I use it all the time and am looking to get an FX6/9. Cool man, thanks 😎🤙
