    Great video! Too bad you didn't catch the rush hour on the O'Hare branch where the cars are at a standstill on the Kennedy and the train zooms past! I like to look out the train window and laugh at the cars stuck in traffic.

    Rode this line for the first time earlier in mid-October, actually, it was my first time stepping foot on the CTA ever. Got off my flight, no checked baggage so went almost directly from plane to train and rode to State Street. Really neat seeing into apartments and lofts that spring up beside the L as you snake your way through the north side into the loop.

    I have a question...why are the platforms so abnormally large? When a train stops, there is almost half of the platform, if not more, just leftover! Yes, I know some stns like Cicero and Pulaski are normal, but look at the majority of L stations. Kinda confuses me!

    • @robfriedrich2822

      Maybe to be prepared for longer trains?

    • @YeOldeGeezer
      @YeOldeGeezer 2 роки тому

      Back in the day around late 90s and early 2000s, there were a boat load of people waiting for the L at any given moment. Ridership has been dwindling since then and covid has further decreased ridership. The long platforms can accommodate up to 8 car trains which are very rare nowadays but used to be quite common back then.

      The Long Platforms Are Because The Stations Are Too Close And It Would Be Weird To Have Small Gaps Of Tunnles between the stops so they made it to one large platform@@YeOldeGeezer

    I'm from Europe and I just don't understand, why is this metro line situated in the middle of a highway. Why isn't it somewhere under a street in a neighborhood, where it would be easy to get to the station and having an actual coverage for the people living there and not having to go on a pedestrian bridge, go across the highway just to get to the station... At least, I hope there are some feeder bus lines which take the people from the neighborhoods to the pedestrian bridge of the metro station and back.

    • @Charlielag
      @Charlielag 9 років тому +17

      Access to these station are easy they have bus routes that leave you in front of the stationhouse, also they are accesible by crosswalks and serve several neighborhoods

    • @thephantomeagle2
      @thephantomeagle2 7 років тому +9

      the expressways in the US cut right through the middle of neighborhoods. Consequently CTA uses the median of expressways for several reasons.
      One: cost- The land has been cleared so they don't need to find a route, or build one
      Two: Ease of access. If you look at the Blue Line, you can see thousands of homes in walking distance.
      Three: Safety - Far better than being along a major surface road where you need to cross, you just take the sidewalk to the bridge above the expressway, and then head down the stairs to catch a train.
      Like others have said, there are also lots of buses. Look at 95st Street in the middle of I-94. Many bus routes converge on that station so people can take CTA to the Loop.

    • @someguy8427
      @someguy8427 5 років тому

      It's easier to walk to the middle than having to walk from one side of the highway to the other and it is far cheaper to build and use

    • @johnkolassa1645
      @johnkolassa1645 5 років тому

      The CTA business model is to encourage cooperation between the bus and rail systems. These stations have local busses feeding them. The price of the bus is included in the price of a pass good on the rail system, and if you pay per ride, transfer privileges are inexpensive. CTA planning for the expressway portions of this line, and line extensions that followed, spaced stations far apart, and so policy otherwise limits walkup traffic.It isn't apparent from the video, but a couple of the expressway stations (the last, and third from last, on the initial segment) have large destinations relatively close to the stations. These are the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a hospital complex and junior college, respectively. Having to cross half the expressway to get to these is a bit of a nuisance, but the nuisance isn't serious.
      Some of the stations closer to the airport, viz. Rosemont and Jefferson Park, feature large bus terminals. Even absent the expressway, these wouldn't have desirable adjacent residential properties.
      Ironically, the worst situations for walkup traffic are some of the newest stations, at Cumberland and Harlem near the airport. I attended a conference at a hotel near Cumberland, and, because of odd placement of station entrances and expressway ramps, what should have been a minute walk was closer to ten. Most of the other stations aren't as inconvenient, since a lot of the interchanges are very compact.

    Jackson, Monroe and Washington stations are on the one long platform...
    1) Why?
    2) How long that platform is?
    3) Can you just walk between those stations using that space between them?

      LuckerHDD easier to build like they did, and more people can be on platforms vs, chopped up, also trains sometimes close lined up behind easy other

      @@ChicagoWhiteSox20 the reason they exist is because most of the stations are a street apart in the loop, in the underground it's different so they build them together.
