Thanks for the run-down. My buddy builds tube amps by hand, and restored my DynaCo ST-70, then hot-rodded it. Pretty sure he was talking about making horseshoe suppressors, and I was having a hard time understanding what it precisely does... Seeing how it's made was very useful, and now I'll try to figure out what it exactly does in the circuit. Good to know how to make them if mine ever fail. I think any failures are caused by solder melt releasing under high loads, but that's alleviated by wrapping the wire before soldering. I barely ever trust a plain contact solder joint, unless it's under 15W (5-7V at 2-3A).
Great Video, Have that Palomar 300A . That you did that great video on tuning! GREAT! Those horse shoes will not fit in that small cabinet with those 6KD6 tube’s! Going with old school 47 ohm / 1 watt resistors with 4 turns of wire around them. You are the King of Amplifier TECHNECHIA . Thanks for all you Do! JohnBoyUtah KJ7TBR .
I went back to the old style. These are popular right now, look cool.... so I made a set. They worked great! Sometimes I test a tube - as in 1 at a time in the old 220, always worked fine. 1st time testing a tube with the hairpin and the oscillation came - smoked both resistors, literally in half, in a few seconds. I pulled out the old faithful spiral style, put them back in - and went about as usual, starting with the tube I was just testing, with no issue. I am glad I test with 1 finger on the power switch! As a pair they had no issues @ all, not sure why the amp / tube didn't like to test a single tube with them. May have just been a fluke...... who knows :)
I would think that if you was testing under a load with one tube then perhaps the plate current was too high . plus if the other choke was just hanging there and it being an inductor with rf on it it probably jumped the gap cause impedance issues with causing the ocillation. But im just sitballing largely from little i know about eletricity and even less about mysterious rf. But most onthis particular issue i pull from these videos of BBi's that ive sat here and watched. As far as real experience with inductors or inductance issues is what ive encountered in working with VFDs or Variable Frquency Drives from 5hp to 400 hp industrial motors in the mining sector. The then new tech of Vfds with SCRs blew my mind as a young cherry electrician. I live to tinker with things im curious about though. I would say every viewr here does as well.
Outstanding work!!! Ive learned or are understanding the fact that electricity flows like water, by having sharp kinks and bends in wires, will have an adverse affect on how it flows, thus creating unwanted resistance.🇺🇸✌
BBI have you ever saw a plate choke wound with anything other than magnet wire ? I have an old Blackcat which i havent even plugged in the wall that has what appears to be 18 to 24 gauge and has the prettiest copper shine and has come un wound but is still electricall connected at both ends. Im guess at some point it has been sat down hard causing the wire to slide down and about 1/4 of it is at about 1/2 inch from the bottom. I should have checked it with my VOM but i saw an issue with the tank coil so i just stuffed it back in its cabinet. After checking the solder joints on the 500z's which looked ok. Beenmeaning to call you but Man i know you stay busy after watching 20 videos sofar. Learning alot and i have about fooled about and caught the CB bug once again but im fighting hard as i can haha..Been out of the game since around 2004 got into it around 98... I went by Snowman 421 here in the Smokey Hills ran a mobile mostly screaming my head off on 6. I remember being on top the mountain when that Prime Minister called out my numbers. Best i remember i all but locked plum up utterly speechless! But of course with a 4 pill com box I knew i me the conditions! I worked Canada Cali Texas NC and the Sandpile prettyoften but to get a break on 6? and by the man himself? Haha ...I about shit my pants put up a tower and a 5/8th Solorcon got me a Tube Am built by an old timer called Redman. Then came a woman and boy was she worth it! Shes gone now and im about your age so idk ...im fighting the temptation real hard! We'll see! thanks for the videos ! Me and you will definately be the last generation. sad too. The hobby kept me out alot of trouble that id been in prior to radio... Probably had alot to do with me getting into the electrical part of my trade whichwas in Coal Mining. anyway im long winded so bye bye bye...Thanks again
I'm confused. You state that the diameter of the suppressor's loop should be 3/4 of an inch, and then use a Bird element to form the loop. But I measure the diameter of one of my Bird elements and it's more like 1.125 inches. Is it 3/4" diameter or 1.25"? I don't mean to ber picky but this is a 220 project that has been 6 months in process and I want to make certain I do it right. once I turn the power "on".
Just subscribed looks like a great channel hey my friend would like to find something in the 400 to 500 W area for his mobile maybe ,can you point me in the right direction
Part number for the resistors didn't make it into the Show More. I copied the part number and it doesn't exist online. When you say Carbon Pack are you talking about Carbon Comp? Can the resistors used be Carbon film or metal oxide?
Yes as long as they are not wire wound it'll work electrically the same. The problem is the carbon film and some of the metal oxide resistors have become almost unobtanium as far as availability
I never stop learning when watching you ! Thanks Mr. BBI
Hey Mr. BBI, I always enjoy your electronics-101 instructional videos. Always appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Hi Luke,
Going to make a pair for my SB220 conversion from SB221. Happy Easter to you and your family and hope you all stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Thanks for the time on this one!

Greetungs from the UK....Sir, will this be ok with my AL1200 ( 3CX1200 A7 )......Thanks.....

A lot more elegant than some of the stock parasitic stoppers.

Funny how hard it was to find info on these parasitic suppressors. Thanks for sharing cause us broke ass can't afford to send stuff out to get fixed.
That is the whole reason I started doing repairs myself
Thanks!

Eric,that’s a very good analogy.

MR BBI o melhor de todos os tempos parabéns guerreiros bazuka Foz do Iguaçu pr Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷
How many ohm's is the older carbon resistor ? I have some NOS . thanks for the lesson .
If there's the colored bands you can use a color chart. But you could just make your own for convenience.
Love it. Thank you
How about the SB-200 with a pair of 572B's, same measurements for the parasitic suppressors the SB-220?

If you coil the wire around the resistor do you get more parasitic capacitance the horse shoe?
Hello There- Will this work for SB 200 as well? Thanks!!!!
Does it matter what tube? Will these same measurements be ok with an 8877?
why was my question deleted?
I always measure tip to base
HOLY SHITBALLS! May wanna start with fixing the crap audio intro!
fixed in the next video.. lol
The Steve Meade of cb
The Steve Meade of Radio maybe...
Another good job I have no doubt it would be a good job I wish we could meet is on the telephone he seem to be playing phone tagk1emw
