MEANING OF SABR | Misunderstood word (it does not mean 'patience' in the Quran) | 2021

- What is the meaning of sabr? Many people translate this in the Qur'an as "Endure patiently'. The Qur'an defines it differently. If we understand the true meaning of sabr it may change our perspective of deen and how we must live our lives.
I must say - it is possible that when people want to refer to 'patience' in certain languages such as Urdu the correct word may be "sabr", but when it comes to the Qu'anic term 'sabr' it does not mean patience. It means something quite different.
We must understand the meaning of key terms used in the Qur'an.

Can you do a talk on ameen/amen/aum? these are one entity , a satanic praise to the egyptian God Amen, meaning the hidden one. No, I didn't know . But I thought about the "sabr" alot. And I concluded that being consistent with doing is " sabr" . Sir from where did you learn Arabic language
I always thought is was just patience. All the translations i have red translate it to patience. But this video makes so much sense. Thank you for this information. We really must read the Qur'an as a book, instead of just reading one verse and thinking we have a answer/conclusion. The Quran truly explains itself.

It transform the believer into an active agent of society, a problem solver, a person who gives and contributes instead of asking and depending, seeking help not by enduring patiently but striving to solve and with solah, this is the true meaning of sabr, thank you brother for this amazing enlightenment.

The Trustees of The Sent Message(مؤمنين) are always constant active agents, never passive. The misused term مسلم is an active participle, not the noun adjective it's been changed into nowadays.
Taking action is necessary for The Trustee/Believer/One Who is secure with The Sent Message(مؤمن), in order to remain Alive/Vibrant.
Passive leads a Trustee/Believer to pain, suffering and being tormented by one's own shaytaan/ego/nafs.
Passivity leads to a period of death(موت) for a Trustee/Believer, Active leads to a period of life(حيوٰة).
Sabr means be firm and perseverance

If someone likes to understand a word or a verse in the Quran in a correct way, he has to read the context. And the same applies to dictionaries. Sometimes we find under a specific word many meanings. For example: صبر ṣabara/ṣabr. We find the meaning „patience“, yes, but we should not stop here and ignore the other meanings. Amongst these other meanings are for example the following:
Lane’s Lexicon:
صبر: He steadily adhered to the statutes of the Kur-án
Dict. And Gloss of Quran by Penrice:
صبر: to be constant towards
صابر [ṣābir]: One who is patient or constant, persevering
Vocabulary of Quran by A.A. Nadwi:
صبر : Save those who persevered and did good works. [11:11]
Dictionary of Hava:
صبر : to persevere in
So, we see, that you are absolutely right - looking at it from two aspects:
1. From the aspect of deducing the meaning of a term in the Quran from the Quran itself and
2. from the linguistic/semantic aspect of the word in dictionaries.

I always had feeling that Sabr has broader meaning than just having patience but i didn't know exactly, like other terms in the quran Salah, sakat, sawm etc. I thank God for making me Qurani /Muslim where people are brave enough to investigate the meaning of quran verses using their minds without hearsay.
Alhamdulillah when we realise the Quran contains all the answers, the truth, and we begin to understand the language of the Quran it is truly amazing. All the falsehood becomes so clear too

Yes I found this so interesting when studying it. I speak Urdu and it has always been used to mean "patient" in Urdu. Seeing most translations I thought patience was the Quranic meaning as well; but when you consider the verses I study in this video, it is interesting how Allah uses it, and how the implications of the meaning can be directly opposite to the way sabr is used in other languages.

Brother, you know the Adnanites Arabic ( Arabia Desert ) words meanings were twisted when Islam was established in all area so fast before making dictionaries ,, which allowed other neighbor languages ( old Arabia accents such as Syriac in north of Arabia Canaanites in Mediterranean costs and the Hemiary saba'iy south of Arabia ) influence the new meanings but not the same accurate Adnanites accent which Qur'an came with .
however, there is a technique i use , if you know Arabic would help you a lot.
any three letters root of word .. do not seek for its meaning in dictionary , just add Alef ( ا ) to the beginning of the root to become 4 letters , then split them to 2 halfs
sabr (صبر ) become issber ( اصبر ) is an order then become Iss ( اص ) + Ber ( بر ) .
now iss ( اص ) in Arabic dictionary means maintain and hold core and ber ( بر ) means do good deeds
that works for many Arabic word roots

wonderful exploration brother - really appreciate the amount of effort you put into this. I think perseverance can be seen as a type of patience (an 'active' patience, like you say) but it is definitely helpful to be reminded of its active and proactive nature.
Salaam brother! Yes I fully agree, there is definitely a connotation of patience in there. Persevering with patience (in terms of seeing the results of the perseverant actions). Something like that - I fully understand where you are coming from.

Brother can u make a video about Hoor een in the Quran. I'm very much disturbed by the interpretation in surah 78 verse 33 talking about women's breasts and all and also about virgin women in paradise. I humbly request u to make a video about this topic including the verses in the Quran related to this(hoor een) to get a clear understanding. And Also there are so many hadiths that are problematic and also objectifying women. And I know that God can't be misogynistic in anyway. It would be great if you could make a video about this☺
Interesting topic - hooreen. Regarding the problematic understanding regarding women and their rights, have you seen we have posted a number of videos about the key problems we see? E.g. the verses interpreted to mean that men can hit women, the issue of halala marriages, the issue about whether a widow should stay indoors during a waiting period etc etc. We have looked at all of these through the study of the Qur'an.

Is it correct that Salat is a Duty/Adherence to Divine Laws as opposed to a ritualistic prayer?
The big question. I do intend to present my humble understanding of this in due course. The reason I have not done it so far is that I only want to present a study when I have completed it myself, and also when it comes to salat, this is the biggest area that causes debate, strong emotions and division amongst so-called Muslims. So I want to do it properly, carefully and in a way when it feels that the followers of the channel are willing to empty their minds of any pre-conceived notions before opening up the Book from God and learning from it.

11:9 And if We give man a taste of a mercy from Us, then We withdraw it from him; he becomes despairing, rejecting.
11:10 And if We give him the taste of a blessing after hardship has afflicted him, he
says: “Evil has gone from me!” He becomes happy, boastful.
11:11 Except for those who are endure and do good works; these will have a pardon,
and a great reward.

Steadfast
Brother Nazir, you say that meaning ofصَّبْر sabr is taken by translators to mean to endure patiently. The translators I looked up did not translate it that way, at least for the verse Al-'Asr (The Time) 103:3
إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ
The phrase ِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْر Is translated variously as:
Arberry: be steadfst
Mohsin Khan: recommend one another to patience
Shakir: enjoin one another to patience
Yusuf Ali: enjoin each other patience
Pickthall: exhort one another to endurance
Dr. Mustafa Khattab: urge each other to perseverance.
Muhammad Asad: enjoin upon one another patience in adversity.
Talal Itani: recommend patience.
Maududi: counsel each other to be steadfast.
Muhammad Abdel Haleem: urge one another to steadfastness.
Sahih Int.: advised each other to patience.
No doubt the common translations for the word is patience and endurance but there are also steadfast and perseverance. Patience is a word that contain within it many nuances. Indeed, if we look up thesuarus.com, we see the synonyms for patience are composure, diligence, endurance, fortitude, grit, perseverance, persistence, poise, restraint, self-control, tolerance, constancy, equanimity, forbearance, guts, imperturbability, stoicism. All of these are part of the alternative meanings that you suggested.
I am quite sure all these translators are aware (as I do myself) of the alternative and inclusive meanings of ‘patience’ when they render the translation using that common simple word.
To endure is not passive in all instances. Indeed, to attain faith, and do good works, and enjoin upon one another the keeping to truth, as in the beginning of the verse
(إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ)
is an endeavour requiring energy, zeal and effort. There will be trials, tribulations and failures to overcome. To achieve the desired end, we need strength of character brought about through endurance, diligence, endurance of pain, tiredness, lack of sleep, hunger and thirst, fortitude, grit, perseverance, persistence in traying again and again, poise, restraint from impatience, self-control, tolerance of the behaviour and attitude of people, constancy of purpose, equanimity, forbearance, guts in overcoming resistance, imperturbability by people's opinion, and stoicism. Good works (righteous deeds) do not come easily, so the need for sabr.

You are right that words like endurance and patience do not always contain a passive connotation. I have certainly seen the word sabr being used in a passive sense when used in day to day dialect and therefore when the word is seen in the Quran people (though admittedly I cannot say most) can understand it in the passive sense. Perhaps I relate to this myself based on my past understanding from quick-translation readings.
