Great discussion about EVs. I think there is a major shift in perceptions about cars. Us older folks buy vehicles that meet our maximum requirements. We want something that can do the once or twice a year family road trip. We buy a truck or large SUV to tow our boat twice a year. We are more emotional in our choices. We like our vehicles to do it all. Younger folks are more practical. They buy a compact (EV) car for 95% of their transportation needs, and rent a larger vehicle when needed. Their approach is way smarter for their bank accounts & the environment.

It was commented that an EV can be seen as a “2nd car”.... I think you’ve got it wrong. It will be the family’s “1st” car. The go-to car in 95% of the driving a car will do. The other car in the family will be seen as the “2nd car”. I guarantee it!

He was right; whoever can afford an $80K EV doesn't drive their families long distances, they fly to their destinations and rent when they get there.

Very valid point. Yet some sort of gas powered car is still needed for backup for most people.
Range of at least four hundred miles will be the game changer in the marketplace with consumers. Then it will be preferable in all areas.

To me if the "primary car" can only do 95%, or even 98% of a what a family requires, it's automatically be the secondary car...
Just in my instance, we own 2 cars, a "Utility I was roped into buying" and a brz for my "secondary car"....As you say 95% of my entire use case is covered by the Brz (the commute, errands, the groceries, the night out), and there are distinct advantages to driving the brz over the SUV (at least to me)....Even in that sense though, there is no doubt which is the primary vehicle between the 2. One does 95% (and IMO the superior car)...the other just does more, and as such if we were not as fortunate to be able to afford both, there is no doubt that the SUV will take priority.

PS: it was also mentioned that “200 miles might not be enough”...that you “can’t top-it-off as easily as a gasoline burner”. BUT..you have to take into consideration that an electric car starts every day off with a “full tank” , unlike a gas burning vehicle.

If the E-tron had 250 miles of range and cost 60k along with being readily available. More than 50% of Audi customers would pick it over the Q5. Audi knows this. That is the same reason they limit the acceleration of the Etron. Audi would make nothing on a 60k E-Tron. Audi most likely makes over 10k net on every well-equipped Q5 they sell. Audi would rather sell 40,000 e-trons world wide at a small profit than lose money on 200,000.

The E-Tron points are garbage. Sure Tesla goes to far with only a big screen and nearly no other buttons. But trying to get all functions of a modern car on a stamp sized screen and 100 Buttons is definitely worse and also incompetent.
Also why are people trying to make bad things good?
    "It shifts beautifully" What?
"An elegant pull away" So ether there was a moron at Audi that believes that people like the delay of gas cars or they weren't able to build a transmission that could handle an electric engine.
"I like conventional" So it is not good, it is not good looking and it is not useful. So let's make up something. It looks conventional, and my grades are also not bad they are conventional. The e-Tron will NOT give a Tesla Model X competition. Someone considering an EV will understand that the e-Tron is horribly inefficient and has little to no redeeming features over a Model X's features. The only advantages it has is a more conventional luxurious feel and an Audi badge. It's sad to hear these reviewers not have a clue about what an EV is and what it represents. Since when does a car that has
    (a) slower acceleration (this shortcoming is now called "elegant start" nowadays?)
    (b) less range (funny how your reviewers make all kinds of excuses for this..underestimated range? Jeez)
    (c) less charging stations
    (d) no ongoing feature upgrades
    (e) no navigate on autopilot
    (f) less seating capacity
becomes more desirable? Do CR reviewers buy a car that's $80,000 with all the above comparable issues and call it a good buy (run for the money)? And I see that your reviewers don't even know that Tesla can also be switched to "slower acceleration (or elegant start)" via a simple configuration change.
Audi is going through a big recall and production issues but this gets no mention, but recalls and production delays are topics that CR emphasized when reviewing Tesla.
Tesla is a trend / life style / status symbol? And the Audi with all the shortcomings is a good "buy"?
Given how your company is not even subtly biased but just blatantly biased, I wonder if it's because CR is being "influenced" or if the reviewers are incompetent. Given the consistent bias reviews that are happening again and again, it's hard to pin this just to incompetence. What do you think CR?

From transport Canada, not sure if it is different in the States. “Issue: On certain pre-launch demonstration vehicles, due to a faulty seal, water could enter the high-voltage (HV) battery through the HV battery charging socket. If moisture enters the HV battery, it could cause a short circuit. Note: This condition would cause a warning and the message "Electrical system: fault" to display in the instrument cluster. Safety Risk: An electrical short circuit could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: None of the affected vehicles were sold to retail customers. All vehicles will be inspected by the company to verify if there is any moisture in the HV system. If no moisture is found, a better seal will be installed. The stops might not be long enough to top off the battery but, will be sufficient to provide you with additional autonomy untill a longer stop. @pauleplatt 5 років тому +7

Here is what you got right:
Perceive build quality - The Audi looks the price
Brand confidence - The campaign by the dealership lobbies to kill Tesla has been effective at limiting service centers. The Audi network will be attractive.
Quiet - Yep, Audi knows how to make a car quiet.
Perceived luxury - The interior speaks to why you paid so much.
Here is opinion that I disagree with:
Front grill - I hate fake grills on EV’s. Imagine making an iPhone look like a Blackberry because that is what you were comfortable with. You sound like old people not wanting to change. “In my day nice cars had big grills…”
Styling - OK, I’m weird in that I think the Model X has decent styling. I don’t see the appeal of the two box SUV style. I find the style practical but I wouldn’t call it attractive. Personally I think the I-Pace looks better; fake grill and all.
OK, so you love the interface. If we went back in time here would be the equivalent iPhone review: “The iPhone’s interface lacks the conventional feel of the Blackberry. I like physical keys and a scroll wheel. I think consumers will feel much more comfortable with a Blackberry than with the iPhone’s everything on the screen interface.” I’m 66 and I feel like I’m young compared to the Consumer Report’s reviewers.
    What you totally messed up:
Range - It is clear you haven’t lived with an EV as your only car. It can be done and it can be done with little compromise. Repeat after me “Range is everything. Range is everything.” There is already plenty of evidence from other reviewers that the range issue on the e-Tron is real. The failure in this area negates all of the good things.
Infrastructure - In Europe a car with a CCS port has a chance if the range is halfway decent. In the US it is different. Only Tesla has a decent charging infrastructure. Until you have lived with an EV and done long trips in an EV you won’t understand. My girlfriend just took her Model 3 on an 1800 mile round trip. She found the trip easy. It probably cost her one to two hours more than driving a gas car but she said she didn’t mind the extra breaks. The Tesla network is easier to use, cheaper, and more prevalent than any other extant in the US.
Seamlessness - The Tesla Model 3, as an example, just integrates so well into your life. The first clue is the lack of an ON/OFF button. Trips are seamless due to the routing that includes charging. You completely missed discussing this with respect to the e-Tron. This is the biggest surprise I got owning a Model 3.
Updates - The large single screen of the Model 3 means tremendous flexibility. Remember that flip phone that was the same when you put it into the trash as it was the day you bought it? Compare that to an iPhone. My Model 3 is constantly evolving. Some things are bug fixes. Others are fun updates such as games. Yet other updates bring wonderful new features such as Sentry mode.
    Summary:
Learn what is different about an EV and what it means to live with one so you know what matters. Also, stop being Luddites who long for the past. Cars are becoming software platforms just like the change that happened to the cell phone. Embrace the change.

My family owns a brand new subaru, a Honda, and a Nov 2018 tesla M3 dual motor.
Tesla has become our choice for family road trips, 18k miles in road trips, NYC to Canada multiple times, to Washington DC, etc.... Never a problem driving at below 20.
Regarding the elegant acceleration, tesla also has the option to chose which drive you want BTW, Audi does not have any kind of options.
CR unfortunately has become an untrustworthy source of reviews. They should stick to appliance and household equipment. Leave the rest of to professionals

They couldn't match what Audi is paying you?

You guys really make yourself a bad name if you're trying to sell us this BS. It's obviously not an objective competition if you consider the e-tron, which already experiencing a recall because of a not properly sealed battery a more preferably choice in terms of reliability. What's next? The doors fall off?
The range is much greater on the Tesla, they have a proper navigation system, which also plans stops at convenient placed locations where you usually can also take a break with a coffee or a meal.
It's also much faster charging, because of lower consumption and higher charge rate.

CHRYSLER 300 is Great on Long trips, super comfortable, spacious and great looking on white. The transmission always is tune great for a luxury cruiser, engine noise is just right, sounds just right without taking away the luxury ride. The bad thing is the headlights, but I like the car enough to tolerate playing with the high been lights when I can. Any other reliable 2014 Chrysler 300 base owners out there? The main difference in-between the two cars is that the model X feels like a hyper-modern electric car and the Audi feels like a high quality luxury car. The steering is light and it wofts along without a sound, it's a perfect highway cruiser, dead silent, super stable and the bang and Olufsen sound system is superb. Although the model X has more punch and a bigger wow factor with the falcon wing doors, the Audi is simply higher quality. Everything from the sound when you close the doors to the all the materials you touch, it's simply better. The leather feels cheap in the Tesla compared to the leather and alcantara in the Audi. The model X does have better range, however I rarely need to drive longer than the Audi can and Norway's fast charging network is quite good. That in addition to the 150kw/h charging speed makes it the better choice for me, it's simply a more luxurious and comfortable car.
Small addition, the model X has been one of Norway's best selling cars for the last couple of years, so pretty much everyone and their grandma has a model X, so it's nice to have something that there aren't 5 identical cars to in every parking lot.

What is wrong with manufacturers that they can’t design great headlights? Seriously, how can it be so hard? I am shopping for a largish CUV and some of them can’t get an IIHS “Good” rating. I won’t buy a vehicle *without* that “good” rating plus your (Consumer Reports) recommended rating plus your reliability rating of at least 3/5 but preferably 4-5/5.

    • @kc5077
      @kc5077 5 років тому

I think it's about cost, most people don't notice the headlight performance until they've bought the car, so it's one of the places manufacturers can save money, and I think it's manufacturers trying to move buyers to more expensive trims. While I like the whiter light HIDs and LEDs produce, they have a shorter throw and sharper cutoff than halogen lights.

Also I seat in Etron back in my auto show, the floor is almost like wrangler high why no one here mention about that. What about charging station. I hate to be disparaging but these reviewers are either ignorant (spent less than 1 hour with the cars they talk about) or they are just flat out paid shills. Everybody is allowed to have preferences for what a vehicle should look like as that is subjective but they completely contradict themselves many times over. I'll preface my rant by saying I own a Model X for almost a year now but I test drove an etron before purchasing it (I had early access here in LA) and still decided to go with the Model X.
-When you have upper middle class income and you prioritize safety you will be looking at vehicles like an etron and a Model X. For the reviewer to talk about buying a Rav 4 hybrid and a Miata is utterly nonsense - is the miata supposed to be towed behind the Rav4 with your luggage in it or the 6th passenger? Seriously, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid runs about 60K fully loaded and would have a more sensible comparison. What these bad reviewers fail to understand in their shortsighted view is the safety provided by the premium vehicles and one accident can easily cause 1/2 million dollars of medical bills. I guess CR is always penny wise pound foolish.
-The etron is perfectly fine for a daily driver and a daily errand vehicle. It can do all the things a cheaper Q5 can do and if Audi did their job correctly it won't come with insane yearly maintenance which CR completely and utterly ignored. They completely missed total cost of ownership. Again penny wise pound foolish. Sure you lose out on opportunity cost of the money not available but EVs end up having a lower cost of ownership as little as 5 years out, much earlier if you drive a lot.
-CR honestly doesn't give a rats ass about CO2 output of vehicles or transition to sustainable energy. Without people adopting battery usage the price will not go down. The Hyundai Kona EV would run around the same price as a Rav4 hybrid but would be a lot cheaper to operate 15kmiles/year.
So I do think the etron was an OK start by Audi. It was not one of their best attempts because it was a rush to deliver as evidenced by it not having a dedicated platform to start with and Audi's insistence on keeping that unneeded grill. If they wanted to they could have put an led lightstrip into the front and it would have had a better profile and lower cd and let the owner deiced if they wanted to light it or not. Audi is always showing off their headlights in commercials. The interior is nice, the leather is nicer than the Vegan in my Model X, and I do like the HUD and the display for the navigation is better than the Tesla on the driver dash as it is 3d compared to Tesla's 2D. The etron fails in efficiency. When you have 5% loss here, 5% there, it ends up being a multiplicative effect like A x 0.95^4 is now only 81.4% of A - so 4 items with 5% loss already cut down efficiency almost 20%. Improving the cd, switching to lighter more efficient motors and perhaps ditching the pouch cells and going to array packs like Tesla does could get those mileage numbers up.
But these reviewers either have an outright hate of Tesla or just trying to be cool to be contrarian to the Tesla sheep. I personally don't give a rats ass what others drive and don't use my car as a status symbol. I still have my Honda Odyssey which has more buttons on the dash than any Audi will ever have and is honestly the most practical people mover ever made. But I only miss 1 button on my Model X and that is the AC. I always like to cycle off the AC before parking so mildew doesn't grow and it requires an extra second to tap the button on the Tesla versus tactile push on my Odyssey as I get close to home. Other than that the screen on the Model X is lightyears ahead in control of any other car. It's so funny they mock it when even McDonalds is pushing people to order food though a touchscreen kiosk. And shifting gears in the Tesla is the easiest I have ever seen in any car. The shifter in all other cars seems almost archaic now, and Audi I guess felt the need to be quirky with the big boatshifter. How the reviewers can say the etron is more practical than the Model X is beyond me. The Model X carries more people, has higher towing ability, more than 50% more range, faster charging. You can't even take a trip from LA to San Diego and back in the etron without recharging whereas you could make that easily with a Model X. Hell if you can make it home to recharge in a Tesla you would actually save time over a gas car by avoiding a 5-10 min gas station trip. The only thing I can see as a more practical aspect of the etron is you can put a conventional roof rack for carrying canoes and bikes which for a Tesla would require a trailer or rack on the tail.
Petrol based vehicles are still needed in areas with consistent cold weather and for off road use where the battery could be damaged but for the majority of drivers in temperate climates an EV is becoming a more practical option as each day passes. Pathetic that CR can't see that. I wonder how much they'll bad mouth the MB EQC when it comes out.

Such an eloquent turn of phrase to turn a negative on its head, among many others. Like the lack of range passed off as "just take a plane" while in the same breath knocking its Tesla equivalent with *significantly* higher range as not good enough.

Lee Iacocca is also known for the "Unacceptable" Dodge Horizon and Plymouth Horrizon by CR before that minivan success. That was another low point for his career. Also responsible for the K-car platform which made up their most successful cars and minivans later on. Another car superstar who is still alive is Bob Lutz, who also worked at Ford and was involved in saving GM designs later in his career. While parts don't have to be made beyond the end of production, most manufactures will do it for 6 years. Even when Saab went out of business parts were available for another 6 years, and third parties filled in some gaps after that but parts were still available. So parts could be an issue but are not the same for everyone.

I beleive that you missed a critical point in your review. Audi/Porsche/VW electric vehicules are designed to be charged at 75 or 80% battery capacity in about 20 minutes (better than Tesla?) with a new networks of fast charging stations accross the country. Why ? Will you test, review and compare how storing energy is done for the new electric cars ? Increasing battery capacity makes the car heavier. This is why fast charging capabilities matters.
