I believe SY used a Ludwig Phase II. The Blue Dinosaur Interstellar Watermelon is inspired by the Ludwig. EHX's Talking Machine and the EQD Interstellar Orbiter (unrelated to the Watermelon) also do the yoy-yoy-yoy sound. Some other wahs and phasers do this, but those are probably the 3 best, if someone was wanting to nail a cover down.
"An obscure pedal you can't buy..." Why can't it be bought? They've been on Reverb for years. How is the GG Rendezvous better at yoy-yoy? Let's see you explain how its yoy-yoy is the best yoy-yoy.
Badass man. Sonic Youth have all their tunings to most of their songs on their webpage too. Even though they split up or whatever. Great job figuring all of this out.
Apparently, an incredibly creative spouse, lovely child, and the world as your oyster are still not enough to keep the earth turning. Stick with the alternate tunings, man, they won’t let you down.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Kim Gordon, Steve Shelley, Lee Ranaldo, and Thurston Moore for making this world bearable, and interpreting it in a way that makes sense to my soul. Life is better with more GABDEG. Hey, CME, how about selling some more strings, and sharing what the best gauges are for some of these tunings.
Sonic Youth website gear page on specific guitars notes exactly what string gages they used for specific tunings... be prepared to buy them in bulk! ;)
as someone not familiar with the band, im interested as to how their live shows would go. either five minutes between each song just to tune or like 10+ guitars on deck
They used to have a rack with guitars tuned to a lot of songs. I have seen them 7 times. Lee and Thurston always had a big rack with like 20 guitars pre-tuned. Alot of songs share the same tunings.
Mary Chain is easy (at least the classic "Psychocandy" sound). Shin-Ei Fuzz/Wah pedal into a cranked spring reverb. Step on the wah into toe-down position when needed for extra noise. Use semi-hollow guitars.
Andrew Pappas use differnet instruments strings you can go as heavy as youd like. Ever seen jack white talk about it in that deleted scene from it might get loud? He talk about just finding a guage so heavy you basically cant play it. Really fun too gets a cook sound
The biggest aspect of their tunings is unison strings. Produces that chorus effect. A simple tuning that is easy to start with is go to drop D and tune the 2nd and 3rd strings both to 'A'. This D-A-D A-A-D. SY doesn't use this but it is an easy way to get the unison sounds
Not a bad attempt... However I think on Daydream Nation I think maybe only Lee may have used a dedicated chorus effect pedal. Thurston's guitar sounds like a post-mix chorus effect, probably something Nick Sansano added as live Thurston never was known to use a chorus (until very recently when I noticed he was using a tc electronics mini chorus pedal with his "solo" band). The band's website is where to go to find all of their tunings, and gear. Its no secret what they were using gear-wise from 1994/5-ish thru to 2009-ish. Alot of their pedals are not exactly rare, with a few exceptions (Ludwig Synthesizer used to get that phasing wah wah sound on The Diamond Sea and both Lee and Thurston using Mutron effects: wah/vol and the bi-phaser). I think the Reverb folks could've used a few of the more exact pedals used as noted on the SY website...
Sweet! @Reverb but can you try Interpol, The Killers, 30 Seconds to Mars, Silversun Pickups, The Black Keys, Mac DeMarco, My Bloody Valentine, Phoenix, FUN, M83.
Did not know they used all these tunings how do they keep it all straight? My brother was even more out there- he played guitars with like 19 notes to the octave & stuff
The Beatles Video 59 danelectro (any guitar with lipstick pick ups), Clean, Fender Amp Holy grail Reverb, Vibrato pedal. That will emulate it near perfectly of his Rock N Roll Night, 2, and Salad Day Era tones.
I'm late, I know: but most of Joy Division's most iconic sounds were done in post, not with pedals, and against the wishes of the band members themselves. Though, if you'd like a lead, the strange guitar sound on Atrocity Exhibition (which Peter Hook described as sounding like a dying cat), was produced using a Marshall Time Modulator, and the synth drums you hear all over UP (including the snare in She's Lost Control) are courtesy the Synare 3. Edit: don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore the production, just some context I suppose
Their main effect was their tunings.
I love your video too!
I agree, and thank you for your awesome videos.
And the drum sticks lol.
do more ween covers
slackerVK
I can trust you better than this video!!
from japanese young man who loves 80/90s alternative guitar rock musics and your videos.
You can tell a real sonic youth fan worked hard on this
Those tunings are a massive "Fuck You" to my guitar string budget.
What’s funny is that most of their stuff they used was just pawn shop junk and anything they found cool 😹
The phaser on Diamond Sea needs to be much more yoyoyoyoyo
I believe SY used a Ludwig Phase II. The Blue Dinosaur Interstellar Watermelon is inspired by the Ludwig. EHX's Talking Machine and the EQD Interstellar Orbiter (unrelated to the Watermelon) also do the yoy-yoy-yoy sound. Some other wahs and phasers do this, but those are probably the 3 best, if someone was wanting to nail a cover down.
The EQD Interstellar Orbiter is also pretty decent for Diamond Sea. Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/L8yGmL2s7Ys/v-deo.htmlm32s
I'm sure you're convinced of that, because a $600 yoy-yoy has to be better than a $300 or $200 yoy-yoy.
"An obscure pedal you can't buy..." Why can't it be bought? They've been on Reverb for years. How is the GG Rendezvous better at yoy-yoy? Let's see you explain how its yoy-yoy is the best yoy-yoy.
Yep, I was going to say Interstellar Orbiter as well.
Badass man. Sonic Youth have all their tunings to most of their songs on their webpage too. Even though they split up or whatever. Great job figuring all of this out.
This is part 1/20, correct?
No...

Bull in the heather was 👌👌👌 very nice
I don't believe in alternate tunings before marriage
Apparently, an incredibly creative spouse, lovely child, and the world as your oyster are still not enough to keep the earth turning. Stick with the alternate tunings, man, they won’t let you down.
Hehee!!

Tell that to my buddy who lost an eye to a broken string when trying to cover schizophrenia

We need a Slowdive one, man.
You might find this useful: ua-cam.com/video/bI2w9GOOPBU/v-deo.html
Step 1) Buy Yamaha FX500, Step 2) Set to "Soft Focus" (patch no.40).
Check out the pedal partners youtube
Outstanding job guys! You especially nailed Bull In The Heather.
less chorus.
more drumsticks.
And, occasionally, baseball bats
I know what you mean. Hats off, however, to Steve Shelley, who’s been massively underrated as a percussionist. He’s awesome.
@@amandacatherine793 not sure if that is what they meant, but hats off to Steve, he's a good drummer.
as someone not familiar with the band, im interested as to how their live shows would go. either five minutes between each song just to tune or like 10+ guitars on deck
They have a million guitars in different tunings already prepares
Imagine being their guitar tech...
Thurston Moore and Lee Ronaldo have put out amazing stuff since they broke up. Steve Shelly, too. He's an amazing drummer and has played with both.
They used to have a rack with guitars tuned to a lot of songs. I have seen them 7 times. Lee and Thurston always had a big rack with like 20 guitars pre-tuned. Alot of songs share the same tunings.
Early on, 5 minutes between songs. Later when they had more guitars, the latter.
We need My Bloody Valentine next
i thought that said Bullet For My Valentine for a second
now i am upset :(
William Allison no way in hell
The Jesus and Mary Chain !!!!!!
BEHEDETY too
Mary Chain is easy (at least the classic "Psychocandy" sound). Shin-Ei Fuzz/Wah pedal into a cranked spring reverb. Step on the wah into toe-down position when needed for extra noise. Use semi-hollow guitars.
Great job, well done sir. Cross the Breeze intro was spot on.
dayum, reverb is like the only gear channel that do cool stuff like this!
sonic youth guitar tunings are always mystery to me
Yesterday I was thinking "it would be cool if reverb do a video about sonic youth" x) my dream came true
Ahh Diamond sea and Skip tracer are some of the best. I remember having the Washing machine t-shirt way back in the day
No back in the day necessary. You can still find tees on their website! The long-sleeve Dirty is great for PJs.
Plz, let me feel old
@@nikphilip :D
sounds great! that Travis Bean, tho. dream guitar.
Interstellar Orbiter.....yoyyoyyoyyoy
Really cool and really accurate! Please do The Killers, Dirty Projectors, MBV, King Crimson, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
yes they need to do kglwwww that would be sick
karen revisited is one of my favorites
Sonic Youth is a cool band but I've always wondered how the hell they get those weird tunings without breaking a string?
Andrew Pappas probably just reallllly heavy guages. Like 14s at least
Andrew Pappas they used different gauges of strings probably
you won't EVER break a string if you know how to string you guitar correctly. you only break'em if you string it wrong.
TheAmazingMeagher 14s? Wow, and I thought Stevie Ray Vaughan used heavy strings.. The heaviest gauge I have are 11s
so that probably won't work
Andrew Pappas use differnet instruments strings you can go as heavy as youd like. Ever seen jack white talk about it in that deleted scene from it might get loud? He talk about just finding a guage so heavy you basically cant play it. Really fun too gets a cook sound
You are an amazing guitarist. Exceptional playing, and you nailed all those effects. Thank you so much for doing this!
This is 10000X better than the other sound like episodes
Man, I never comment UA-cam videos. But you really nailed everything. That's awesome.
this video is so gear accurate too! Lee Ranaldo loves his Tele Deluxe and his Travis Bean! Good job man!

Yes Sonic Youth, this will be fun.
Wow! Best one yet! So cool that you managed to nail all the tunings!
Wild Tunings
Liked before I even listened. Cool that you're doing it, even if it's not 100% accurate!
...but the tones were pretty great too! Awesome job. And sorry you had to go through all those crazy tune-ups (or tune-downs?).
This is awesome!!! Thanks so much for making this video. I’m sure it was no small feat to unpack all of those layers.
Great job! Covered so many great songs/ tones!
Nailed Bull In The Heather
probably the coolest video on youtube
Potent pairings: Placebo please!!!
Do Fugazi?
guy used maybe a boost pedal and wah. Ian is just straight into a Marshall, no mids or something
Sarcasm.
lol
I don't even own a guitar neither know how to play, but this video gave me a lot of satisfaction.
Really cool video, great job sorting out the tunings!
This video was awesome, totally made my day👌🏼
I'd like to see one of these type of vids for Swervedriver!

William Allison no William you don’t

Awesome. You could do a whole series just on Sonic Youth.
Really great. Really great! Thanks for putting this together.
These tunings are insane
Perfect. Awesome. Kids have it so good today.
Well done, Joe. No easy task.
You managed to go above and beyond on the Cross The Breeze intro, sounds even more beautiful than the studio version
They were such creative guitar players
Excelente!!! Andaba buscando esto hace tiempo.
Brilliant. Also impressed with the Tele
I love this this is awesome!
So on Karen (Revisited) the personnel would be Guitar: Thurston, Lee and Kim and Bass: Jim O'Rourke?
who wants to tell them that the pick scrapes on Bull In The Heather were done on bass?
It's not about the petals they did have, it's about the petals they didn't have (tuner)
omg, I now can't hear 100% the same ever again. My memory of the riff was completely wrong lol.
So awesome!
I'm still waiting on an episode for Interpol

You guys should do a king gizzard and the lizard wizard potent pairing
MY BLOODY VALENTINE!!!!
Liked for all the punctured thumbs from those alternate timings, miffed b/c no Silver Rocket :(
Don't forget to get a fender style amp, completely max the controls, then pick as LIGHTLY as possible for that super tactile sound.
Bull in the Heather intro was behind the bridge not the 12th fret harmonics. Other than that nailed it!
I fucking love Sonic Youth!
This is awesome. Thanks!

AWESOME job, Reverb!!!! PLEASE do Grinderman, METZ, My Bloody Valentine, and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard!!!!

it wasn't just pedals, it was tuning and modifications
That jazzy is fuckin gorgeous
we need anna calvi potent pairings, she's sounds so good, thanks reverb.

This is a great video. Thanks for this.
That's excellent! CHAPEL HILL? Any idea how to get the sound at the start of the song? Please help with this life-long quest :-)
i can't comprehend these tunings at all.
Did not know they used all these tunings how do they keep it all straight?
My brother was even more out there- he played guitars with like 19 notes to the octave & stuff
The tunings are taped to the back for each guitar.
Travis Bean for ever :-) ! Nice job
DAMNNNNN I JUST JIZZED. OK this is too fucking amazing
The weirdest tunings band, awesome work 😁
Can you do Mac DeMarco next?
Up
Most of the tones would be the same thing. That being said, still up for it.
Just buy a chorus pedal
Buy a guitar with a single coil in the neck, and use that with a chorus pedal with the mix knob all the way up on the clean channel of your amp
The Beatles Video 59 danelectro (any guitar with lipstick pick ups), Clean, Fender Amp Holy grail Reverb, Vibrato pedal. That will emulate it near perfectly of his Rock N Roll Night, 2, and Salad Day Era tones.
Thank You Sir!
Now do a how to sound like Dead Kennedy’s. That’d be awesome 😎
