I saw the 2009 Star Trek at the Hollywood Bowl a few years back. There is nothing as beautiful as watching this under the clear Southern California skies.
John Williams created and conducted for so many ground breaking films and to hear in person is a phenomen experience. But I also appreciate the talents of a conductor such as Danny Elfman and if I cannot hear it live I do often play these soundtracks audio only. I appreciate the art and talents of all musicians!
The score for “Jaws” is so much more than the familiar shark theme. The music when they are out on the water in twilight is just as lovely as the soft lighting.
I had the honor of singing in the choir for a live orchestra screening of Close Encounters of The Third Kind in October 2018 in Las Vegas. It was the honor of my life! May this trend become more popular.
Such a fascinating world, film dubbing. Strings so much better than the synths many young filmmakers use today. If you can see a silent performed with a live orchestra it's a rare treat!
Film concerts: Performing movie music live 1421pm 5.1.25 my local cinema should do this...maybe show the original Nosferatu replete with chamber music and then air the latest variant of said picture....
One of the highlights of my life was getting to watch the original 1920s "Ben Hur", restored, with an original score composed by Stewart Copeland and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Stewart performed on drums and percussion along with the orchestra. He was also the one who restored the film. It was incredible.
Experienced this many times. After 15 minutes, oddly, you don't realize the orchestra is there because it sounds exactly like the movie - but then again, that's the point!
Love that they are covering this. Such an incredible way to watch films and appreciate the incredible contribution of the orchestra while doing so. Thanks for this great work!
I saw Blade Runner live with my good buddy who had never seen the movie. I was absolutely floored by Vangelis' score being played with an incredible story onscreen. I'm jealous that was his first time lol
Great segment as always David Pogue and team! Always love behind the scenes on anything in live entertainment; the history, the tidbits, and the perspectives of those involved. Thank you!
Yeah, I love it, you can bet on it guys, movies soundtracks in symphonic big wide orchestra & live it the picture in motion all through the music language is suuuuper sensational, I love it ❤🎉❤
I was able to see a performance of Philip glasses score for the film Dracula live. It was amazing. But it was a string quartet with piano accompaniment. However being able to hear every note and see and hear where the music build up and such was very cool.
People need to understand that film scores like these are good music, period. Not inferior to classical music in any sense of the word. Good music is good music, regardless of type.
Going to live concerts of film score music is an extraordinary experience. If you enjoy music written for movies then you should hear it live when you can. Paraphrasing the writer Kurt Vonnigurt I know there's a God because there's music....
I remember seeing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra doing this back in 2004. It was the first time they were doing it like and the movie they chose was City Lights. It was the first time I had seen a Chaplin movie and I remember people were rolling on the floor laughing.
I saw the soundtrack to The Princess Bride performed LIVE with the movie in Baltimore with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra the day this video was released. What a coincidence!
I have seen "North by Northwest" done with an orchestra. The anticipation of waiting for the chase on Mt. Rushmore was really something, knowing when those familiar notes would start. Likewise, hearing music for a silent film: Clara Bow's "It" was fun too. There was a guy playing a piano and using a type of sliding whistle at a point of the film where her edge of her skirt lifts up for a second. My favorite movie is "Lawrence of Arabia" followed by "Chinatown" of which I wouldn't mind seeing those both done live. Only thing is the former film would be a chore for length. "Chinatown" has a great theme for trumpet and great sinister music before finding a body.
The problem with these concerts is the amount of money it costs regional orchestras to put on these productions. The orchestra could completely sell out a whole concert hall and barely make a profit; at least, that is the way it was with our local orchestra.
This has been going on for years, so this is being reported like it's new is wild, but I've always loved it! It shows how important music is on film. Secondly...Debra is quite elitist. There's nothing wrong with doing more of this. You want butts in the seat? Give them what they want more regularly so they can be curious about coming again.
But there has to be a balance. If you “give them what they want more regularly,” then there’s no reason (or time or money) for them to come to the other regular concerts put on by the symphony. It was hilarious, though, when they said it also has to be music the musicians want to play. Since when?? As a professional musician, we have a job to do, the job we are hired to do and that’s what the hell we do, 😂. Although, 99% of the time we enjoy doing anything outside of our wonderful regular symphony concerts. We especially love movies and collaborating with live artists. But I don’t know why they threw that in there about it having to be something we like… not even remotely true, lol.
@ I agree, there’s need to be a balance. But she clearly was against doing any more of this type of thing. But I will disagree on music that the musicians want to play. That needs to be a balance too. I too am a musician, and the venn diagram of music that the people want to hear and music you want to play can be overlapped but it takes creative thinking. If it’s not fulfilling, then the job isn’t meaningful to us. Sure, the people might love it but if WE don’t, it’ll show. It can’t, nor should, be all one thing. In the end, not everyone will be happy, but you can try you’re best to fulfill both things.

I had the honor of being one of Mr. Parnther’s Bassoon students in Tennessee. He’s a wonderful person and a phenomenal musician and conductor.

My first LP was Mikos Rosza’s score for “Ben-Hur.” When my contemporary or into rock music, I was completely into symphonic film scores.
3:22 guy has a great voice that would be ideal for a big video game franchise.
I was listening to this with my eyes closed. That man's voice snapped me to attention. I love your comment.

My favorite music albums, movie soundtracks 🤙🏾
Same here with Lawrence of Arabia, Chinatown, North by Northwest as examples of favorites.
A very clever way to draw the attention of the young generation to cultivated music !

I wanna go
Who needs Bach when you have John Williams?!
The quote of the day! lol
I'm guessing that was tongue in cheek! 😆
I like both: the classics like Bach, and most modern stuff.
I sincerely hope you're speaking in jest.
@@austinhan6998 Yes, it was a joke. I love classical music. I adore Bach's concertos for cello.
KOYANNISQATSI & POWAQQATSI at the Hollywood Bowl, was just spectacular.
Wooooo!
Need to get Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune Parts One and Two, too!

It's so wonderful to score in a theater.

Can we get singers to sing Arcane live? If they did that I would both seasons again.
🦈
(suggestion for any future video similar to this one: more objectivity (or no opinionated narrating, reporting, or interviewing))
And no more David Pogue.
You first.
