  • The two sub-networks had a combined total route length of 181 km (112 mi), making the whole network the fourth largest in the world, after the networks in Melbourne, St. Petersburg and Berlin.
The tram is historically the second type of urban passenger transport in Moscow, the successor of the Konka (horse-driven tram). However, the presence in Moscow by the beginning of the 20th century horse-railways hindered the development of tram lines. For the laying of tram lines, it was necessary first to free the roads from horse tracks. In 1901, the council purchased the first competition of the Belgian joint-stock company. When, in 1903, came a period of redemption horse-drawn railway the second Belgian joint stock company, the Duma is not solved, as, according to N. I. Astrov: "In Russia we have not experienced builders and engineers". In November 1905, immediately after the events of October elected a new mayor Nikolai Guchkov. Its launching coincided with the revolutionary actions of workers of Moscow in November-December 1905. As soon as the life in the town had returned to normal, Nikolai Ivanovich ordered to proceed with the laying of tram tracks. In February 1907, a movement began in the Myasnitska street, the Sretenka street and the Lubyanka street, from the Passion of the monastery Dmitrovka and further the Sretenka and Myasnitskaya. The first electric tram routes linked the outskirts of the Garden ring with the center and mainly repeated konechnye. ~Wikipedia

Whoa....until seeing this video, I didn't know Moscow had such an extensive tram network, and with such impressive looking trains. And, some of the best designs in the world, I would say. I was always under the impression that Moscow just had trolley busses. Well, evidently not anymore. When was the tram network started? Also so interesting to see some of the neighborhoods and their architectures aside from the central Red Square area, which is probably the only part of the city most Americans have ever been exposed to visually, thru photos and film. Looks almost just a little bit Parisian, or even Frankfurt- or Prague-like in parts. Definitely a European motif, though. Anyway, I wish we had trams like these here in the Chicago IL USA region. But, Chicago being Chicago, we don't. Even though Chicago had trams at one time, and quite extensively. But not like these, that's for sure. About all it has left now are old elevated and subway trains lines, complete with all the gangbangers roaming them, looking to beat up and rob people. But unfortunately that is in part because while we don't have trams, but do have plenty of something *else* that Moscow does not have. But, that is a subject for another discussion somewhere.

@@HRHolm-bi6zu Now public transport in Moscow belongs to the city, but the new mayor wants to give everything to private companies. In other words, soon only buses and the subway will remain in Moscow.
Two tram lines (4km/2.5mil) have already been closed in 2022. (Google Translate)

You can use Google Translate.

Состав скудный, одни витязи и марковки. В соседнем Питере в каждом трамвайном парке много разного подвижного состав. Я вовсе молчу про 5 парк, там чего только нету, начиная с ранних элэвэсов и заканчивая малышами.
