McNair was born in a small tin-roofed house in Mount Olive, Mississippi on February 14, 1973. He attended Mount Olive High School as a freshman in the fall of 1987, where he played football, baseball, and basketball in addition to running track.
As a junior, McNair led the Mount Olive Pirates to the state championship. McNair also played free safety in high school, and in 1990 alone, he intercepted 15 passes, raising his career total to 30, which tied the mark established by Terrell Buckley
McNair was initially offered a full scholarship to the University of Florida to play running back, but wanting to play quarterback, McNair chose Alcorn State University, a Historically Black University which competes in the NCAA's Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Subdivision) Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). In 1992, McNair threw 3,541 yards and 29 touchdowns, and ran in for 10 more scores.
In his senior season, McNair gained 6,281 combined yards rushing (904) and passing (5,377), along with 56 touchdowns. In the process, he surpassed more than a dozen records and was named an All-American. In addition, McNair won the Walter Payton Award as the top I-AA player and finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Rashaan Salaam and Ki-Jana Carter.
McNair set career records for the Football Championship Series with 14,496 passing yards, as well as the division record for total offensive yards with 16,823 career yards. Only the carer passing has been broken since he left college.
With the third overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft, the Houston Oilers and new head coach Jeff Fisher selected McNair, making him at the time the highest drafted African-American quarterback in NFL history and signing him to a seven-year contract.
McNair's first season as the Oilers' starter in 1997 (the team's first year in Tennessee) resulted in an 8-8 record for the team, which played its home games at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee.
Early in the 99 season, McNair was diagnosed with an inflamed disk following the Titans' 36-35 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, and needed surgery. McNair returned against the St. Louis Rams, and with McNair starting, Tennessee won seven of its last nine games, good for a record of 13-3 and second place in the AFC Central.
Following a 13-3 season in 2000 which ended in a playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens, McNair put together his most productive year as a pro in 2001. In 2001, McNair registered career passing highs in yards (3,350), completions (264), touchdowns (21), and quarterback rating (90.2).
In 2002, Tennessee finished the regular season 11-5 but lost. Seems like they just can’t get there. Great team but they are always one game short
2003 season, an injured calf and ankle kept McNair sidelined for two games, though he still finished with the best numbers of his career, including 3,215 passing yards, 24 touchdown passes, just seven interceptions. Another great season and another playoff loss.
April 30, 2006, the Titans allowed McNair to speak with the Ravens to try to work out a deal. on June 7, 2006, the two teams worked out a deal to send McNair to the Ravens for a 4th-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.
After thirteen seasons in the NFL, McNair announced his retirement from professional football in April 2008.
On July 4, 2009, McNair was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds, along with the body of a 20-year-old woman, He was 36 years old. text messages between the McNair and the woman were exchanged proclaiming their love to one another in which the woman texted the victim, "u love me" in which McNair replied, "I love you baby."
McNair, who was believed to have been asleep on the couch when the shooting occurred, was shot twice in the body and twice in the head, with only one of the shots coming from closer than three feet. After killing him, the murder sat on the couch beside him and shot herself in the temple.
The Nashville police declared McNair's death a murder-suicide.

I was surprised by how moved I was by your video. Thank you for being so respectful and showing a great deal of love for Steve McNair, and for the many other people whose stories you share. I really respect you. Peace.
Air McNair was the greatest qb Titans ever had bar none.I cry every 4th of July.they will never b the same.Always have a celebration in his name.Hard core Titans fan.We luv n miss u Air n always will.Rest in peace my man...We luv u n always will.
Even though time has passed: this story still breaks my heart. Life is so fragile... Thank you! Sadden beyond belief!!!!
IF HE WASN'T CHEATING ON HIS WIFE IT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE WOMAN SCORNED!!
My home state Mississippi born and raised. One of the sports legends among the Mississippi's greatest; Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Deacon Jones, and so many others.
And Marcus Dupree...
@@6time686 Yes sir. I saw a documentary on Dupree and how he lost his fortune. It broke my heart man. Great athlete and got ripped off by people he trusted. Stole all his money. Cruel world out here.
@@grafxdesigner93 My favorite 30 for 30. He didn't know any better back then and a few people preyed upon him, namely that crooked ass pastor that had his hands in Marcus's pockets. He was Barry Sanders before Barry Sanders. Great documentary on him.
@@6time686 Yes that’s where I saw that documentary. Man I was ready like speechless that Dupree got preyed on like that. Dupree was the Truth. I believe he was the first RB to get the biggest contract for a RB at that time. Still got love for him. Awesome human being. If Dupree stayed healthy and got to the NFL, he will definitely have a Hall of Fame career hands down.
@@grafxdesigner93 He actually did get to the NFL. He played for the Rams. Didn't work out but you're right he would have been in the HOF if it did.
I pass by his gravesite often, being from Mississippi. His family is all over that Mt. Olive, Magee, Prentiss, & the Hattiesburg area. His old mansion isn't far from where he's buried.
Yes we are. We just visited our cousin grave today.
@@alishawhite9376 😁😁😁😁A SHOUT OUT TO MISSISSIPPI.
I'm very impressed this blogger is very detailed really did his homework and wasn't just running his mouth he was straight to the point and very very knowledgeable about his projects man not bad very good job
A very sad and tragic story RIP Steve "Air" McNair ❤️ Thanks for sharing!!
I worked in Tennessee when he played. So sad. Thank you for sharing this with us. Much love and respect. Please take care of yourself and be safe.
It goes to show that you can't Judge someone by the Facade they portray in public. You don't know the pain or the deeds they do in private. I'm still so shocked by the way he died.🙏
Continue to rest Steve Air II McNair! I met him on the campus of Alcorn State University once and watched him on the gridiron! He was a gentle soul and talented! Beneath The Shade of Giant Trees! Thank you for sharing his final resting place.
You do a great job. You're always giving us background information, which I might not know. You are respectful and appreciative of those who have passed. 🕊️🙏❤️
Thank you for showing this & paying respects. I’m originally from nashville….nashville loved Steve McNair! I happened to be visiting my folks for the 4th of july , when it was announced that Mr McNair had died. My mom was certainly a fan….and this death affected her deeply…..he did so much for our city & it was appreciated. We will miss him dearly…..definitely gone too soon! RIP!
Beautiful piece Brother. I just recently found out he and I are related. I’m going to share this piece with my family in Bassfield Mississippi and Picayune Mississippi. Thank you Brother
My grandmother was a McNair great grandmother McNair looks just like Steve mom all 3 look just alike. My grandma married a Riggs from Fayette and my mom Married a Marsaw from Louisiana never went to Fayette often but I can tell Steve mom had Indian blood smooth black creamy skin like my grandma Essie Mae McNair Riggs. I saw on a video where she said she can still smell his scent when his spirit comes around. Much Love ❤️
Enjoyed your segment. Alcorn is pronounced 'Allcorn' an HBCU school and a FCS Division 1 school, the head football coach is Fred McNair, Steve McNair older brother. Have a good day, Sir.
It's tough with this central Alabama accent to pronounce stuff right. Thanks for clearing that up for me!
I don't comment often. Both my husband and I was born in GA but decided to make our home in Tennessee. He's a huge sports fans. We are big Titans fans.win or lose we support the Titans 100%. We make time to go to home games every chance we get. We remember when this happened. My husband is a quiet man, but I remember him crying saying how sad and tragic this was. We support both GA and Tennessee sports. I just remember my husband saying how he met him and what a nice down to earth guy he was. You can see how loved he was and still is. Gone but not forgotten. We don't say Goodbye, Rejoice in Paradise. Love, respect and positivity Always. Love from the J Family. Gratitude to you for the level of Respect you not only showed to Steve McNair. But all those you vist and show with Respect and Dignity. We love your channel and enjoy your videos. Take care, be safe on the road. Keep doing what you are doing. Just know we appreciate you. And enjoy the places you take us. The level of Respect you show. So again, thank you. Peace, love, light and Blessings from our family to yours. The J Family.
Thank you. It means alot to hear that. I try my hardest to show respect and be as equal on opinions as I can. Once again, thank you for watching and it does me well to hear the encouragement.
Rip Steve McNair we will miss you great QB for the Tennessee Titans 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
Such a tragic ending to one of the toughest QBs ever! He played a season with a broken sternum which is unheard of. McNair, George, Wycheck some of my favorite times watching the Titans. #TitanUp #AirMcNair #NFLgreat #NFL
This is really cool for you to do this one. Thanks 👍🏽.
What a tragic way to go... so sad... I
recall that incident. 🙏🏼 thank you
Such a sad story, Steve was a great football Legend. My son & I were big fans here in West Virginia. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant
-I'm from Tennessee. "Air" McNair might be from Mississippi, but he's OUR QUARTERBACK !!!! Go TENNESSEE 🏈 TITANS !!!!!!!
I remember him as a member of my team, the Baltimore Ravens. In fact I saw him at a hotel in Pittsburgh wearing a purple shirt in the lobby. "We" were playing the Steelers on Pittsburgh and beat them handily!!! What a wonderful guy, gone too soon. Rest in peace Steve. 😢💜🖤💜🖤😥
I remember this happening, such a sad story all around.
My buddy worked at the Dave and Busters and knew “Kaz”
@@wysmn I worked at Dave and Busters with Kaz. She was really nice quiet lady.
Everyone does bad deeds in private big and small. His were known to the public which makes people react worse. Most of the people who judged him have committed adultery in some fashion. And a lot more have done worse. Everything he did from coaching up young men to donating his time and money to all the charities should forever outweigh this. Everyone has secrets, but if we let the light side shine brighter than the dark side then this world would be better for it.
I recently found your channel and I have enjoyed all of your clips. Thank you for what you are doing. Great research and presentation
So much nostalgia when it comes to my mind that superbowl against the rams. A real OG. May God be with you and all of us air Mcnair.
Steve McNair was a great person. He did a lot to help people in Nashville.
No disrespect but Noone is righteous not 1. And Committing adultery led to his murder not saying at all that he deserved it , but the wages of sin is death. Sad story
@@jayco2309 According to the scriptures...you are correct....A lot of people don't know this....All will stand before God one day....its coming....prepare to meet the Lord. Skillful player but he's in judgment now....All of us have an appointment with God.
I got to meet him and his family. I used to take my sons to his football camp at Alcorn State University. No matter whom he slept with; he still was a great person. Did so much for people. My aunt and cousin were employees of the university, so I was allowed to help get all of the gift bags ready for the boys for after camp. I never had to pay a dime for my boys to attend the camp. I still miss Mr. Steve McNair. One of the greatest NFL players of all times.
This situation shows you not to cheat! This death could have been avoided.
I like how he acknowledged the beauty of another gravesite
One of the best who ever THREW it SIP STEVE AIR MCNAIR. IN GODS HANDS, TAKEN TO SOON BUT THE MEMORIES LINGER Thanks FOR THE MEMORIES.

Thank you Sir for sharing this video ❤❤❤❤
The Legendary Steve "Air" McNair...RIP!!!
Excellent video and very moving. You narrarated that video wonderfully. Great job!
I lived in Nashville at the time my problem is when his first friend went in the apt and found them why didn't he call the cops instead he called another friend and they went back in the apt then called the cops kind of strange plus how did the gun get under the dead girl
I totally agree with you! Makes you wonder....
Thank you so much and blessings and blessings 🙌🏿 ✨️ 🙏🏾 ❤. God blessed you and your family
Got to watch him play against Eddie Robinson and the Grambling State Tigers when I was a kid. He threw the tightest spiral I ever seen in my life. After that I never called him Steve again it was AIR McNAIR
Very nice. Thank you.
Thanks for not rushing thru showing us his final resting place. It's beautiful.
I would like to share my Layman's prayer with you. And I ask if you would say it with me. For where two or more are gathered in my name there am I in the presence of them. Matthew chapter 18 verses 19 through 20. Dear Lord we thank you for our blessings, and our blessings to come. Lord forgive us of our Sins and trespassings of our fellow man. We pray for your wisdom to guide us through the trip Falls of life. We pray for your healing hands to rid us of illnesses, we pray for your solid foundation to hold us steadfast in the storm of sin. We pray for your compassion and comfort to eliminate our worries. We uphold your glory, for from your throne love is Rule. Thank you, thank you, Lord God in heaven, hosanna in the highest, Your Majesty we praise amen. Love & blessings everyone.
I am not in to football but I have heard of him thank you for sharing
Thanks for all u do great Chanel 👍
I can imagine what kind of a head football coach he would've been, and I mean at any level of the game.
#Gone2Soon
great video. Thanks as always for what you do.
None of us are saints in this is world. Repent
I was blessed to be able to see Steve play football
RIP
Thanks so much for sharing i met him when he was a rookie here in Houston great guy and very humbled RIP Steve
I'm from Mississippi and didn't live too far from their. Love Steve, use to meet he and family at Ramada Inn when he had games their. He and his mom were awesome and Steve never forgot. So sad he died too young
I really dig your presentation style. Glad I came across your channel.
I was glad you showed the upper vaults, I found one of these in TN in a small Graveyard and though the body was re surfacing? Enjoyed your video
I find these graveyard visits morbid but extremely interesting at the same time.
I know this video wasn't made to be a Steve McNair bio. It's about his football greatness and his death. Yet, while he did have the woman in his life who shot him to death, he also had a wife and four kids, which if told would've given this story more context.
Read the Wikipedia article....it’s identical to this “script”.
@@chr970 There wasn't any mention of his wife or kids in the video.
Murder suicide, allegedly .
@@cheryljuliette5017 That point was part of the video. So, what's the point of your comment?
W
I remember when this happened as well. Situations like this never end well. I thought to myself for his wife to find out the way she did must have been crazy! I know she stopped talking to Steve's side of the family for a while after this happened. I don't know how they are now. There was a lot going on with that! She inherited everything and I don't think she gave anything to Steve's mom. That was a crazy situation. RIP Steve McNair!🙏🏼
So sorry
To be honest I didn’t know McNaire pass away I was shocked to hear his passing. To be honest I was in hospital for a year in 2009 so this was news to me. RIP you were one of the greatest quarterbacks ever
I like your channel!! 😃👍
Man this hurt me every one going through something
What happens to a player who plays with the WRONG person? Should have STAYED faithful to your wife.
I am from Hattiesburg and saw him at a softball tournament his team was participating in at two fields around Hattiesburg the year I returned home after my retirement from the USAF in 1993.
May both That young lady and Steve rest in heaven… hopefully!
Ps. Hope all athletes learn this lesson and don’t cheat on their spouses.
Well done
RIP Steve
He was traded for a 4th round pick, not a “4th overall pick”…big difference.
Theres not alot of Qbs who could play nearly any position on offence.Steve"air"Mcnair Was thee exception.
Wow.... Would be something if the above Buckley Veteran's grave is related to the Buckley player you referenced.
7:53 Yeah buddy, that is some awesome respect paying.
One of the best I've seen play the game of football but all of us have an appointment with God...prepare yourself.
Rip air McNair I got over 80 football cards of him
80 cards of a marginal qb?
Brother just found your channel , new friend here this is my kind of content .
Thank you. God bless you.
I appreciate the fact that you’re honoring our quarterback. Let me just say this my spirit tells me there’s no way that was a murder suicide. I’m thinking foul play between one of his so-called friends and his wife. Just my opinion but my spirit ain’t never wrong.
Well it is cause it was a murder subside that's what you get when you deal with the devil. He was having an woman on the side and when he decided to get rid of her for another woman she was not going to let that happen. We all pay for our sins.
@@davids.fitzsimmons8900 I just don’t think it was a murder suicide. But a Double homocide. Sins? Even if what he was doing was wrong, he did not deserve to die
I remember when this happened.
🙋🏾♂️💭 🍾🥂 forever legacy Air McNair gone in flesh but legacy stands tall
Walks into my walking closet.. Pulls out my #9 game jersey.. Remembers him and weeps.. Love You Steve my favorite NFL player.. Titan up!! See you on the other side! 😇
He was the best!
I wonder if those covers over the grave are there because the cemetery is in a flood plane?
First time here.Well Done Back Roads!!
Much respect to him and family. Had got is artigraph in the 1990s
That's just crazy that she sat next to him and blew her brains out.
So sorry I loved him
Thank you for the video
What a shame. I didn't even know! Broken 💔
I honestly felt more sadness for Steve's wife and kids. I can't imagine grieving for a spouse who was killed by a person he was having an affair with. Rest in peace.
Thanks for sharing!
I heard the vaults are above ground all throughout Louisiana since they’re below sea level
Rip Steve Air McNair!!!! My favorite Tennessee qb of all time!!!! When McNair was with Tennessee all those years you could tell he was the heart n soul of the Tennessee Titans!!!!! I Remember Tennessee losing Eddie George to a concussion against Pittsburgh in the playoffs up in Tennessee!!!!!!! But it was Steve McNair Takeing the Titans on his shoulders n drove them down the field for points again n again🤔 Tennessee would win it on a Joe Nedney field goal either late in the 4th or in overtime. ( Going way back)
Steve a warrior on the field
Was Shine another nickname?
I live in Nashville and remember when that happened 4th July 2009. I knew people that worked in different areas around Nashville that saw McNair with different girlfriends. McNair at time was married. The way I understand it he was at a condo with girlfriend who shot him when he was asleep. I think she killed herself. McNair did a lot of charity work but he fucked around a lot and it cost him his life.
If you think that girl killed him and then killed herself you better think again. He was set up by loved ones. Allegedly

This still breaks my heart to this day.
Great video paying tribute to Steve McNair; such a tragic story... The vaults with the concrete tops above ground was the way burials took place until at least the 1980's. Because of floods cities and towns changed ordinances whereby the vault must be sunk below the surface of the ground.
What a beautiful grave he has🙏🏾💔🕊
Great video Thx you sir❤️
