Thanks for putting this video up . On of my favorites , A shame General Electric failed to come through with the turbocharger they told Army Air force they could build , History may have been quit different.

For me, the shaping, drawing, stamping, machining and fabrication etc are some of the fascinating aspects of creating complex and precise items such as an aircraft or car. This is true even today, regardless of the inclusion of computer aided processes.

The development of WWII aircraft is fascinating-- from the Japanese, British, American, German, Russians.
The Germans were particularly innovative, TOO innovative possibly... to their detriment.
The Airacobra had a cool "hot rod" look to it.

A great video on my favorite WWII fighter. Not a high flyer but still a hotrod with bite.

A beautiful plane and used VERY successfully by the Russians on the Eastern Front...but most air combat at lower altitude where the Cobra thrived...
Just like the Finns used the Brewster Buffalo with amazing success... again mostly low altitude...
    Both plans created many aces...

Thhe Finnish Buffalo also had none of the armor that the USN needed, nor the larger fuel tank for flying distances over the Pacific.

Looks like it was made just prior to, or just after the entry of the USA into WW2. Most enjoyable.

I'd like to know the range of the 37mm cannon: especially compared to the 20mm in the Messerschmidt. I never knew the amount of frontal armour in the Aircobra until this video. The Soviet willingness to start with a head-on shot, combined with a cannon that has no aiming apex worry about, plus a lot of frontal protection, would mean a match made in heaven for those pilots. The low-altitude strengths might be only half the story. Comments?

It's amazing to see the slow firing of the 37 mm cannon. I wonder about its utility for air combat - maybe for bomber interception?

For a fascinating and detailed description of what it was like to fly the P-39 in the Pacific, look for the book Nanette: Her Pilot's Love Story, by Edwards Park.

A 1942 film. I suppose it was good idea to use the P-39 as an example, since the plane wasn't exactly our (the U.S.) best.

Just think, if the western allies had used them as the soviets did, it was great for low level ground attack, it was simply misused, and a couple of years too early. Imagine the carnage on an armored column .... Sending it out against zeros and me 109s, nah....

The Soviets found that the Airacobra was VERY effective against both the Me-109 and the FW-190.

LOL!!! Seemed like a good idea at the time. The horrendous spin recovery had to be at least partially due to placing the engine at the center of gravity...like an ice skater in a spin, the closer the mass is to it's center, the faster it spins. THus you have great visibility with the engine behind the pilot, but virtually no spin recovery

What was it I heard one of the variants called? A P-40 with a zero behind it heh. Thanks for the upload.

That would be the P-400, an export variant with a 20mm hispano cannon instead of the 37mm cannon taken into service after Pearl Harbor.

The Americans didn't particularly like it so it was pawned on to the Brits, who didn't like it either, so it was passed on to the Russians who loved it !!!

Without the supercharger, it didn't have high-altitude performance the UK or USA needed for the ETO at that stage. What could they do with a low-altitude, cannon-equipped, ground support tank buster? Maybe park it out in front and put a sign on it, "Tank buster - runs good - $20." Now I have a serious question: how come a 37mm cannon busts open any tank when aircraft-mounted, but the early-war 37mm AT guns were called, "door knockers"?

    • @ArmouredCarriers
      @ArmouredCarriers  11 місяців тому +5

Armour location. Tanks were defended (and mostly still are) against ground-to-ground attack. Approaching from above, aircraft were presented with thin shell plating and splinter armour.
The same applied to from below. US pilots soon figured out their 50cals were good for strafing tanks while on hard roads. The rounds would ricochet up off the road and through the soft underbelly.

Nice Video, ah good old WW2 Propaganda. Interesting plane as they come, the aircobra, if i remember correctly, the sowjets made the best use out of this type of aircraft, mostly in close air/ground support and bomber/Stuka hunting. That worked very well with this plane, but hunting other modern fighters like the zero ha not so much. Still good showpiece of film made by the aircraft building company trying to sell its planes. NIce
