This one and Boulez sonata 2 are my two contemporary favorite pieces , thank you. Mr Hamelin never let the side down when it comes to this sonata

This is very beautiful. Thank you for learning it and sharing it with us. As a young man, I did not like “contemporary” music. Now, this sounds almost romantic to me. Thank you again.

Just think of the many hours (weeks) Mr. Hamelin spent learning and perfecting this extremely difficult composition that no one enjoys, with the exception of a relatively few individuals like myself.

Well then, I'm happy that there are at least two of us bright people who appreciate this piece. Actually three, if we include Mr. Hamelin. (I assume he wouldn't put all that time and effort into a composition he dislikes.)@@philjohnson9320

It does not has any sense this music, it's absurd, art has been corrupted all througth the XX Century, not only in music, it does not say anything, is only like an intellectual construction without heart, poor people let them manipulate for this kind of trash... Even Marc André

I’m really happy to listen to this and Hammerklaveir from Hamelin which I think are two of the greatest piano sonatas !
I hope he will bring back Sorabji too someday

@@MrJippithat's right, he was 13, and he had the recording all summer, several months before he got a copy of the score, so he ended up memorizing it by heart

At 22:50 you use your elbow. I do not see any such instruction in the music. Is this a special edition or just something you felt in the spirit of what Ives would have approved?

Lots of “I don’t understand the music therefore it’s bad” comments on here. Please have the humility and grace to realise that your personal antipathy is not an indication of the music’s inherent quality.

This Ives sonata is 85% TRASH and random notes put together. I’ve read the score and played through this piece trying to find the relevance of this piece. I couldn’t. It’s a random idea by Ives. I’m going to Mechanics Hall in Worcester Massachusetts tomorrow May 9th 2024 to hear this piece for the 4th time played by Marc Hamelin. Great pianist But not a fan of this composition.

If this like/ heart came directly from you Mr Hamelin, I met you at least 3 times at Mannes School of Music in New York when you had recital there probably 15-20yrs ago with my 2 friends. You’re the reason I now play Alkan monumental Sonata. I also became fund of your playing when I heard you play Liszt Transcription of Don Juan . The most incredible rendition. This piece is in my repertoire too. I have to admit, I was hoping you will record the 12 Transcendental Etudes. I play most of them.

Well, I have access to the score of this piece, and I'm not aware of any wrong notes Mr. Hamelin played. Of course, I suppose it's possible that Charles Ives deliberately wrote wrong notes just to aggravate people.... but I doubt it.
