    We adopted Lincoln (now Zosia) from PACC in Sep 2023 when she had been in shelter for a month. She is a wonderful family member and loves to go to the dog park daily to run and play. Thank you PACC for all you do for the animals in Pima County. We put on one of these videos when we have to leave her alone for any time, she is absorbed! Maybe she recognizes staff :)

      That's awesome you adopted Lincoln! Maybe she recognizes some of the other dogs and staff members. I hope she gained social skill while attending playgroups at PACC and watching these videos.

      It was just luck that I happened to be there when the came. I had seen them walking around when I was getting ready (discarding the poop, fetching the rake, getting poop bags, etc.) but I didn't know who they were. They were hoping to see a video being made and I was able to talk to them about the videos

    My two small toy dogs are tuned in. It keeps them entertained, and I can get things done. Funny because one of them hates tv, but will watch this and not blink.

      Wow, thanks for the wonderful appreciation! The staff and volunteers work very hard to take care of all 500 dogs (we still have extreme overcrowding like all shelters and rescues nowadays).

      That's a great question! And I'm glad these videos help out with your dog/dinosaur sitting.
      Part of it is kind of random. A lot of dogs want to stay in the yard and just sort of blend in with the crowd. They tend to stay in the longest. Some dogs want to leave and there's no reason to keep them in the yard, so they typically leave fairly quickly. However, it depends on whether runners are available to handle that level of dog. The levels are color coded (green, blue, pink, orange, purple) with green being extremely easy to handle and purple being the hannibal lechter dogs that require top handlers. There's also red for "staff only" handlers (no volunteers). Note: The leashes don't match the dog color level.
      Sometimes a dog wants to leave but they need to be merged with another dog, meaning they need a kennel-mate and the play yard is a good place to see if they get along. So sometimes that dog needs to wait until it's clear who they can be merged with. And sometimes a dog wants to leave but the staff decide that the dog is likely to become more socialized if they stay in the yard longer. The staff also keeps notes on how the dogs behave and they sometimes need more time to evaluate the dog.
      Sometimes a dog is behaving badly and needs to be separated. They might be moved to the side yard, possibly with another dog they get along with. Or they might be sent back to their kennel (along with their kennel-mate who might not want to go back).

      @@DogPlaygroupStories thank you for the detailed reply. I figured as much. Like some you can tell are ready to go. But I love the ones that just lay down and are like no I’m here for good now.
      I really love luna I hope she has been adopted.
      I’d love to do this kind of thing but I’d have the separation anxiety not them. I would want them all which I know sounds cliche.
      I’m from the uk and it’s so hard to adopt a dog here. There’s so many needing homes. But the amount of hoops to jump is hard. But well needed I guess.
      Thank you for doing this. I’m watching more than the dinosaur at the minute haha.

      @@helen1722 My favorite are the dogs who just casually walk in and then know it's their turn to leave and they just walk out on their own.
      Luna was adopted back in April.
      A lot of the staff and volunteers have the problem of wanting to adopt/foster all the dogs. There's a lot of emotional stress when working with the dogs.

      @@DogPlaygroupStoriesaww thats so good to hear about luna. I love boots too. Maybe it’s the eyes. Has he been adopted too? But I loved lunas markings and that video of her just staring at the woman watching. I loved her unusualness.
      Yeah I love that too about the ones like yeah I’m done. I’m enjoying watching multiple videos and seeing the familiar faces. It’s like learning characters in a tv show.
      I can imagine it’s a hard job and even to volunteer. But it’s clear from the videos just how hard everyone works. Major props to you all. ❤

      Yes, Boots was adopted at the end of April (about a month after the video was recorded). My original intent was for it to have regulars in each video week after week until they got adopted, so it would be like a slowly changing cast of characters. There were some, like Max, Mystic, Jazz, Stanley "Off", etc. but happily they were adopted quickly enough so that most of them were short term. The Brennan and Magnus story was amazing (in #28).

      Lots of people here comment on how much the videos help their dog. I can definitely say that being in the playgroups helps a huge number of dogs at the shelter. Lots of dogs start out frightened and then get more relaxed. Even if they're not playgroup rock stars, they seem to get benefit from just sitting in a corner and watching the other dogs. The alternative for shelter dogs is being in a kennel that's noisy and sometimes frightening.

  • @bigsarge8795

    I've always wondered - do the dogs get any form of anxiety when they get mobbed when they enter the playground, or do they kind of accept it ?

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  8 місяців тому +2

      It varies a lot. Some dogs are nervous but tolerate it. Some dogs are very confident and don't have any issues (and often play with the other dogs right away). Some dogs don't tolerate it and give corrections to the other dogs: snarling, low growling, snapping, briefly chasing the dogs angrily. Over time the dogs become more tolerant as they learn that it's just social behavior. They gain a lot of social skills from the playgroups, even the frightened dogs (at least some social skills).

    Is this a no kill shelter?

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  6 місяців тому

      Yes, based on the American Humane Society definition and I'd also say yes based on my own common sense and the behavior of the staff and volunteers at the shelter. They do heroic efforts to avoid euthanizing dogs.

    • @DogPlaygroupStories
      @DogPlaygroupStories  6 місяців тому

      The handlers who run the playgroups are trained in knowing when to send dogs back to their kennels. Overall the staff and volunteers have years of experience with many thousands of shelter dogs. It's important to get most of the frightened dogs into the playgroup in order to desensitize them from being frightened of other dogs. Eventually most of them improve a lot. Some go on to be fairly social. The purpose of this is to help them to get adopted and out of the shelter. Note that when those frightened dogs are back in their kennels, they can be even more frightened.
