    Thank you for the walk down memory lane! I remember watching this episode of "That's Incredible" when it first aired and I was a wide-eyed little kid.
    I miss those days when monster trucks looked like and were actual trucks. The modern, tube framed monster trucks of today with their fiberglass 3D bodies are also amazing machines but to me there is just something irresistibly cool about the old trucks that the new ones will never ever be able to replicate. I guess that you just had to have been there back then and actually seen them in person (like I did) to understand my love of the old monster trucks.

    For all those with Negative comments about the Speed of this race. These trucks had leaf spring Suspension which is stiff, with the springs on these heavier than a tractor trailer 20 shock absorbers per corner wouldnt soften them up enough, they got a lot faster as they got suspension upgrades, Bob came up with a cantilever /4 link chassis on coil over shocks that are still used today in a refined form .

      Exactly this is what started monster trucks people don't seem to get this lol you can't compare it to today but we wouldn't have today's technology with out the beginning of monster trucks lol

      That was a good race. It was FIXED, but it was good. That big hesitation at the beginning by USA 1 PROVED that it was rigged. But, what ever. I just would've liked to see an ACTUAL race, instead of just a Bigfoot commercial.

    • @Tatertot_Tommy
      @Tatertot_Tommy Рік тому

      Shock absorbers aren't designed to "soften" the springs. Their job is to control the motion of the tires and axles. NOT to soften springs.

    Best car crush EVER. I miss the days when they just crawled all over the cars, and one good wheelie or a short jump onto the junkers was AMAZING. I admit that the modern Monsters are incredible machines but, like modern NASCAR 'cars,' they've lost their connection to average people in average lives. These things - well, PARTS of them - started their lives as REAL trucks, and they were designed and built largely by skilled blue-collar mechanics. Once again, I absolutely respect the ingenuity and educated engineering that goes into the modern trucks. But they lack the charm of enthusiastic imperfection. Thanks for uploading.

    • @gdeangelkick
      @gdeangelkick 5 років тому +1

      In the hyper-law era, every imperfection is some lawyers ticket to the gravy train. Your average blue collar mechanic goes out and get tractor tires, buffs 'em and hard carves in a tread. The tire explodes during the run and the spotter on the ground, or maybe a spectator, loses an eye, or maybe just claims to have gotten a concussion. How would that play out in 1983 vs. today?

    I'm 41 years old my mom has been taking me to the monster trucks since I was 2 years old ,it's a family tradition of ours😊 Turlock California every year and Bigfoot was always my number one ,Bob Chandler was such a gentleman when I was a little boy I got tossed a t-shirt in the crowd and this old guy snatched it from me, bob saw that and had security come and get me and my mom and gave me a personal tour and my mother tour of the semi truck, the trailer ,extra Motors extra parts etc and I left with a ton of stuff that I still own and cherish to this days a autographed checkered flag that has Skoal bandit Showtime grave digger bearfoot etc ,just feels good to share that story with like-minded individuals😊 the good old days 😊✌️🇺🇲

    I prefer the old monster trucks over the modern light weight tube frame shit today. Back then the monster trucks were real trucks and the crash cars were complete with chrome and glass. Also these trucks did not need any ramps to get onto the crash cars. While today the trucks barely touch the crash cars, back then they were really driving over and crashing them!

    I remember when I was a young kid, Bob chandler came into the frame building shop across the street from my home, and he was pitching the idea to Gene lynch to build the frame for the first Bigfoot for a percentage of the Bigfoot franchise.(I think like 7% of total income) Gene was totally offended by the idea and angrily threw Bob Chandler out of his kitchen. Bob comely rolled his blueprints up, and says to me, "remember this moment kid, this is the day this man(Gene lynch, Gateway raceway frames) passed on making his fortune" then went on to say if he won't build this someone else will, and its gonna be the biggest thing to ever hit the 4x4 Industry as Gene holered and screamed for Bob to get out! He wasn't building this guy's play toy for him!!!.... ha, did Gene really screw that one up, as Bob chandler was right and went on to build the Bigfoot franchise to quit a business I'd say. Way to stick with your dreams sir!

    USA1s steering broke when the race started, otherwise it would of been balls to the wall. Both trucks had CB radios so Bigfoot slowed up when he was informed of it and made it look a little more difficult than what it was. USA1 pretty much did this with no steering, he went slow not to wander off the cars. This was the very first time ever USA1 had 66” inch tires put on it.

    Ditto Daehawk
    : the reason for going so slow was because of the front steering pivot axle area was prone to snap and gave no warning signs to drivers that they were pushing their luck. One hard bump and that was it. U joints, Ball joints, steering hubs (before the age of planetary gear sets) were not considered with the idea of having wheels so large attached. It's changed.

      It was also the 1st time BF and USA#1
      really used the 66in tires. My guess they didn t want to break on national tv. According to Bob Chandler, Everette was wrenching on USA#1 right up to the taping.

      Yeah it's changed but I sure do miss the classic looking truck design. Now they're so jazzed up they hardly even look like trucks anymore.

    But the in-studio crowd never yelled "That's Incredible" to close the segment. The studio always yells That's Incredible to end all segments. Bigfoot and USA-1 got ripped off. I never realized competitive side-side car crushing was occurring in '83. I thought single trucks were still exhibition crushing 2 or 4 piled cars; just up and over for county fair crowds, at that time. Thought competitions started around mid '84, but obviously my thinking was wrong. And who knew USA-1 was not white originally. Pretty cool how Bob Chandler inspired a billion dollar sport/industry/ just from crashing a few cars with a lifted, modified F250 in his backyard for fun. The godfather of monster trucks.
