Steinbrenner was adamant about getting Robert Merrill to sing the anthem at a time he was being besieged by innumerable celebrities and their supporters who saw it as a great platform for self-promotion. But fortunately, and thanks to Steinbrenner, Merrill, basically a very modest man who just happened to have a great voice, continued to sing the anthem at the Stadium year after year and in a manner that has never been equalled.
