    Introduction:
    The Kawai GX2 Grand Piano is a 5’11” (6’ class) professional grand piano made entirely in Japan by the Kawai Musical Instrument Corporation. It is evolved primarily from the Shigeru Kawai Concert Series, sharing several design features and components, although material quality and selection & construction techniques remain quite different between the two.
    Stu Harrison from Merriam Pianos guides us through his commentary on the piano, discussing the action, the tone, and overall musical impressions. Be sure to also check out our ‘playing-only’ videos, and if you are new to our channel, please subscribe! You’ll be kept up-to-date with all things piano, and it helps us to continue to make great piano content!
    Action:
    The Kawai GX-2 Grand Piano uses the Millennium III ‘Ninja’ action, which is a 3rd generation Millennium III grand piano action, featuring carbon-fibre reinforced composite repetition parts, carbon-strengthened hammer shanks, and concert-grand length key-sticks. The action is the same as what can be found in the GL grand series, the rest of the GX series, as well as the Shigeru pianos. The primary difference between the three instances are the hammers (quality, felt type, and voicing level), and the amount of regulation time.
    The GX2 has a beautifully balanced and highly controlled action which gives the tactile impression of playing a much larger piano. It doesn’t feel heavy, simply substantial, with lots of room for creating multiple dynamic levels from ppp and up.
    The repetition speed is great, and it’s virtually impossible to even try and simulate a missed strike. One of the world’s great piano actions, without a doubt.
    Sound:
    The GX2 is a very well-balanced scale, with a Steinway-esque mid-tone through the tenor and lower treble, an extremely complex and prominent treble with excellent sustain, and a supportive bass. The piano was designed for versatility, and it shows. There is enough clarity and projection for contemporary material, but enough colour and depth to serve highly discerning classical players.
    By comparison, the GX3 adds about 10% more overall volume, with a similar sustain, with the biggest difference in the bass clarity and projection. However, for most small-to-medium sized rooms, the GX2 should be more than sufficiently full in tone.
    Quality and Fit & Finish:
    The GX Grand Line from Kawai line is one of the most well-prepared and consistent grand piano lines we’ve ever encountered here at Merriam. It’s one thing to tout a manufacturer’s claims of quality and sell an instrument to a high-demand user based on those claims...it’s entirely another to have to see how those expectations are met over an extended period of time under heavy use and in multiple situations. The Kawai GX2 has been extraordinary in this regard:
    - Exceptional tuning stability
    - Durable hammer voicing
    - Excellent scratch resistance on the polyester
    - Low oxidation on strings
    - No known soundboard cracking on any GX sold by Merriam to date
    - Excellent performance in institutional and commercial settings
    Please be sure to check out our other GX reviews as well as all of the other grand pianos on our channel.

    Great presentation. GX is a fine line of instruments. I think those who are considering Yamaha's CX line, this is an equally high quality Japanese alternative with its own sound and action profile. You just don't find them in venues as much, though some venues have them. They are in institutions however. The biggest ones, GX6 and GX7 are bordering on premium sounding pianos. This is nicely recorded, presented, played and the instrument is very well voiced.

    I regularly play on an C.Bechstein 1908, a Steinway 1973, a Bösendorfer and a Kawai gx and i must say that i really get an amazing tone out of it that the others dont provide. In other aspects of sound of course the other Grands are special, uniique and truly amazing. But I hope a lot of people will have a great time with the Kawai ;)

    Regarding the consistency - now the GX2 is out for about 6 years. How do these instruments develop during the years? In the 90's, a friend of mine bought a Yamaha Baby Grand Piano and the way it developed during the next 2-3 years ... well, it was not for the better. I am in the process of finding me another grand piano. Currently, I am on a 85 years old August Förster (180 cm). While the sound is nice, I am hesitating to have it refurbished as it would require to exchange literally everything (also the piece of wood holding the screws). Or - that is the reason for asking - getting that GX2 model.

      Honestly, really consider before you make the jump. There isn’t a difference in tone quality, that’s how good the gl line is. The difference is more of a difference because it’s a different instrument, so don’t think of it as an upgrade. It’s more of just changing to an instrument you like more.

    • @MarianoPerez
      @MarianoPerez Рік тому

      @Gustavo Go that's a tough choice. On the one hand, forums, advertising, and the like are going to tell you that the gx1 is a better piano, and I wouldn't put it that way. I would say that the gl30 and gx1 are equally quality pianos, with the gx1 having extra things that might or might not make a difference to you. That's how I would recommend you approach the purchase, two equally quality pianos, and does their difference materialize into enough difference that it's worth it to you to pay the extra money's. For me, it wasn't and I played the gl40 and gx2 blindfolded, but sometimes I'm like maybe I should have purchased the gx. But that's my mind and advertising and the idea that extra things make it a better piano playing with my head, but when I played them side by side it didn't. The gl40 sounded better to me and that's why it's in my house. You can't go wrong with either choice, the gl30 sounds lovely. I don't think I'll be upgrading pianos in my lifetime unless my sound taste changes where i want somethingthat sou ds different. Honestly, even the shigeru didn't sound better, just different. It was a beautiful sound, but the gl also sounds beautiful. These are all quality pianos that will last you a lifetime, forgetting model numbers, extras, etc, the real question is which one sounds better to you, which one speaks to you.

      Thank you. I had put a deposit on a brand new Kawai GL30 but a brand new GX1 and GL40 arrived that same month. I spent seven hours going back and forth between them. I disqualified the GL30 pretty quickly. Then I went back to go back and forth between the GX1 and GL40. I ended up buying the brand new Kawai GL40.

      Hi! Brent here! Kawai does not make many GX2 Aures 2 pianos and they're not pianos we regularly stock (we have ordered them for customers before though). With that said, it may tough to tackle that review, but we will certainly do our best. Musically speaking, the GX2 Aures 2 is the exact same piano as the GX2. It just includes the Aures 2 transducer system and digital interface. :)

    Great vídeo. How do you compare the tone of kawaii with a typical European piano, like a Bechstein or Bosendorfer? Is it brighter or harsher? Louder? More ressonant?

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  4 роки тому +1

      Great questions! I'd describe the GX2 / SK2 scale design as a very resonant, definitely a louder treble than most European instruments, and darker generally in character than a typical German piano. You get TONS of tone off of the cabinet itself, so it's less 'focused' a sound than you'd typically get from European, but certainly there is tons of structure to the tone. Hope that helps! - Stu

    • @fabiomand
      @fabiomand 4 роки тому

      @@MerriamPianos
      It is so intersting. I have a Yamaha U1 and live in an apartment. Sometimes I feel the sound excessively ressonant and even harsh and I find very difficult to get a soft sound at low dynamics, pp or ppp ...almost impossible. I have played at European pianos but not at home, so I could not compare the pianos at the same acoustic conditions.
      Another intriguing point is that sometimes pianists describe the opposite of bright as mellow and sometimes as dark. What is your opinion on this issue? The opposite of bright is mellow or dark. I compare mellow to a warm sound and dark as some kind of muffled sound....not the same thing but both definitely not bright.

      Yes, it is! The GX2 originally had the "Blak" label to differentiate it from the RX, which for a short time was simultaneously being produced for a few years. They retained it, but all GX pianos have the marking. Thanks for the question!

      Definitely better bass strings and more voicing on the SK than GX, which is going to give it a cleaner and better sustaining Bass for sure. Action weight I find varies slightly with which MPA has built the Shigeru...some of them feel the same as GX, some of them come in a few grams heavier. Thanks for the comment Ivan! -stu

      I recently compared a GX2 and an SK2 and while I didn't feel a difference in the action, the SK2 bass is certainly cleaner. The difference your ears are hearing you can also see with a sound frequency analyser app on your smartphone. On the SK2 the fundamental tone in the bass is stronger compared with the partials than on the GX2.

      Which app are you using? I just bought a brand new Kawai GL40 a few months ago and I love it. But I am debating if it’s worth upgrading to a GX2 or GX2 Aures2. What are your thoughts on this? Would I get enough improvements from a GL40 to a GX2? I play a lot of Chopin and Brahams.
