I was very lucky, back in the day. I had a friend who had connections in the music biz. He also knew some people from Hackett's record company. While Steve was recording this album in the Netherlands my friend and I were invited for dinner with Steve and his band one Sunday afternoon. You can imagine what an experience and honor that was.

    A couple of suggestions:
Shadow of the Hierophant (out of his first solo album, features Phil collins on drums)
Land of a thousand Autumns/Please don't touch (from "Please don't touch").
    Keep rockin'

Your and Natasha’s good news made my day! Natasha is wonderful! Yayyyy!! I’m so glad you’re going to the concert. Are you going with Natasha? You’re going to be blown away by the musicianship from everyone in the band. They’re all so incredible.
“Every Day” is another song from this album you’ll probably like right away that combines vocals with a strong and exciting instrumental melody which he will be playing in concert. Steve Hackett has a distinctive voice and it’s easy to listen to but guitar is obviously his greatest strength. He uses vocal harmonies to his advantage in a lot of his songs to fill out the vocal sound since his voice isn’t as powerful on its own as some other singers. He’s someone who “sings” most powerfully through his guitar playing as he gets it to sound almost human!
This whole album is good but you MUST listen to the Selling England By The Pound Genesis songs you haven’t heard yet AND “The Musical Box” from Nursery Chryme before you go to the concert. You already know “Watcher Of The Skies” which he added back into the set list along with “The Musical Box” that weren’t in the set in September. “Watcher” has come and gone since he started the Genesis Revisited concerts in 2013, but TMB was always in every show as it’s a concert crowd favorite, for good reason, as you will see. I’m thrilled to see TMB back.
I really enjoyed your analysis and I think you nailed it, as always. I especially liked your analogies.

I concur! Very informative, Cathy! This title track, along with Every Day, were the two I picked from the album, to help promote its 40th anniversary performance I got to see Steve do last October. Fantastic show! And I'm pretty sure Steve liked it better than when he played the Twin Cities last time, which was at a bar full of loudmouth regulars not there for the music, and with bartenders who kept having to turn on a loud blender to make the piña coladas/margaritas people were ordering. 😂

Spectral Mornings is one of a 1000 reasons why he is one of my favorite guitarists. .

Hey JP, this was the type of show the first time I saw Hackett after he left Genesis and made his first 3 albums. Really just and extension of much of the music he had written for Genesis that they didn't use, he developed them further and many wee used it his first three records. If you listen to "Voyage, Please Don't & Spectral" you'll hear many Foxtrot, Selling England & The Lamb similarities in the music, Great guitar Elec & Acoustic, Mellotron and Drumming !!
Hackett Live in 1979' full show it's Great !!!! ...... ua-cam.com/video/wQ6fRLe6bQk/v-deo.html .... (Pease, Ace, Shadow, clocks) are stand outs. Scroll down on the comments about 10 times and you'll see the songs and times etc. Enjoy JP : )

Enjoy the Show. I been a fan of Hackett since the Genesis days. We saw him in Oct. in Seattle and was totally thrilled by his show. I even felt at times it was better than the last time seeing Genesis Live. Quite the show. Stellar solo material and the entire album of Selling England by the Pound by Genesis. Thoroughly Enjoy yourselves with a night of music you'll wish went on for many more hours!

Your wife is a rare and wonderful human being. There's nothing more rewarding than making the people you love happy, and that goes both ways. Back to Mr. Hackett, this is one of my favourite guitar sounds along with Gilmour and Howe, all very different players though I'd place Hackett somewhere between the two others. Also, the backing is a sound I very much associate with my most loved Genesis songs. The rest of the album is great and it has a lot of variety, you'll love it.

His 2019 tour in the UK was celebrating the 40th anniversary of Spectral Mornings. He played a mixture of tracks from Spectral Mornings and his latest album in the first set. After the break, on came Nad Sylvan and they performed Selling England by the Pound in its entirety. His band are phenominally talented - they perform Genesis as well if not better than the originals. Fantastic experience. Cheers Mrs J P.

It made a huge impact on me, and i loved it ever since! The rest of the album is up there among his best work, in fact, his solo albums from Voyage of the Acolyte to Defector are his best albums and are all classics ! I'm a big fan of Genesis (especially of the Peter Gabriel era), and likewise of Steve Hackett. I recently listened to one of his solo compositions, named 'Wolflight,' and it was absolutely great. What sets this song apart is that he sings on it as well (and does it well, unexpectedly). It's a song about wolves and there is a Mongolian vibe to it (I think). You ought to check out. If you like Spectral Mornings, you would enjoy this piece of music as well. Steve performed in Los Angeles last year, and it was amazing. Here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/-KLnVcWg3nw/v-deo.html

I think the slow build up relates well to a perfect sunrise. I can picture the slow arrival of the dawn as the sun creeps over the horizon. The suns rays then start cascading down onto the valley below, as it reaches deeper and deeper through dappled leaves on the trees. And the world awakes to its light and its warmth. That to me is a perfect spectral morning.

The first three Hackett solo albums are all essential listens (and some songs on Defector - thinking about The Steppes)... On this one, Tigermoth is also incredible (ans showcases nearly every side of Hackett's music), Everyday is a very nice art-pop song, and Clocks is bombastic ! Still, I think Voyage of the Acolyte is my favorite by him, during his seventies period (Shadow of the Hierophant, what a journey... !). If you want to hear him being as expressive as this during his Genesis days, try The Lamia (listening to this solo usually moves me close to tears...). But that would mean reviewing The Lamb, and that's an album that should be done in its entirety , right ? ;-)

    To Nat,
I’m not as big a Genesis fan as Justin, who is, but I think it’s very sweet that you let him fit the concert into your special day. I’m sure he’ll be thinking of how lucky he is while there and he owes you bigtime.
    Onward:
This song exactly expresses what my earlier early morning coffeeless rant was about. I am new to Steve Hacketts solo stuff and a lot of his Genesis work but, I have at times had too many guitar magazine subscriptions and read about his projects and gear through the years. I imagined what it would sound like... I wasn’t far off. As I listened I kept hearing that it had some Tame Impala similarities but I know Steve did it first, to his credit. I enjoyed hearing it and trying to guess your reaction. I thought you’d pan it for being too repetitive, wrong again. Steve did it right.
    Hope you enjoy the concert!
    Peace and Music

Great! You're going to Steve's concert! I've seen him last year. I think he's still playing Spectral Mornings and Selling England in full. 2 great albums! Lucky you: Firth of Fifth live played the Man himself.
The story about your anniversary is fun and Natasha is great! When it comes to music, concerts and especially Prog, my wife is also very forgiving. We're lucky!
Your review of the song is really good. It's Steve with space to express himself. I knew you would like this one. As Cathy said, try ''Every Day'' the album opener and maybe ''Dancing with the Moolight Knight'' SEBTB opener. It's probably a good thing to get familiar with the material before the concert.

That's true love right there. That is the kind of understanding that really only comes with being together for a long time. My (now) wife did something similar when YES came to town a few years ago. I really wanted to go and she bought us tickets even though she's not into them at all. Stuff like that is why guys like us are so lucky.
This is actually my first time hearing Steve's solo stuff *after* he left Genesis and I'm typing in real time as I listen. I've listened to his first solo album before, and I'm actually a little surprised how easily this song could've slid onto a record like Wind and Wuthering. Makes you wonder why the band (really, Tony) didn't want something like this on the record. This would've been way better than "Wot Gorilla?" to close out Side 1.

I love Steve Hackett's solo material. Jumped right in and bought myself a full boxset of all of his early albums but the man just keeps on getting better. His latest cd, At The Edge Of Light has some awesome tracks.
Spectral Mornings is brilliant, but my personal favourite is Voyage Of The Acolyte. - You're absolutely right to pick up on the sense of freedom of expression. Steve had an awesome input into (particularly later) Genesis material, but there is a huge feeling of escape in those early solo albums.

Natasha loves you and has made a wonderful offer...
And she will hold it against you for the rest of time. Even your death (and may you live to 1000 years Banzai!) will not free you from her resentment.
    Enjoy the show.
Then listen to Tony Banks' first solo record, the concept album "A Curious Feeling", based on the Science Fiction Romance "Flowers for Algernon" and its movie version, "Charlie".

The Ballad Of The Decomposing Man from the same album is worth a listen... Just keep my nose clean, Egg, Chips and Beans...I'm always full of steam.... All sung in an Northern English accent, (translation available here free of charge)
Enjoy the gig man, and top marks to your beloved for the late pass on your special day.

Respect for your wife Justin. Hope she enjoyed the concert. I took my now wife of 39 years to see Steve in the 1970s in Newcastle, UK and although not a prog rock fan liked the experience and went back again the following year! She then came with me and our two prog rock loving sons to see Genesis in 2007. Prog....a family genre!

Your wife is loving and spectacular. Say thanks to her from your subscribers for letting you go. Many times my wife has been OK with me going to concerts alone, always want her to come too but it's just not her thing.
I've never seen Steve Hackett live, but based on live performances on UA-cam I know you're going to enjoy the 21st.
And please listen, and react, to more of his solo work before you go to see him live. I'd recommend something from Voyage of the Acolyte; too many tracks to choose but if I had to pick one check out Shadow of the Hierophant - written by Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford.
Still thinking about female vocalists, after the comments for the Hounds of Love reaction, I googled the vocalist on Shadow of the Hierophant and it surprised me to find out she was Sally Oldfield, Mike Oldfield's sister. Not relevant just an odd fact I didn't know, and which I only looked up because of a discussion on another one of your reaction videos.

At least one good thing about the pandemic, you will not have to miss your anniversary day to see Steve Hackett at the Plaza Live...even if it is two years later. See you there!!
Oh, and if you really liked this do not miss the new (2015?) version on UA-cam by David Longdon (Big Big Train) and Christina Booth (Magenta). They made lyrics to fit the song (not sure who wrote the lyrics) and they sing an amazing version that is very likely to cause dust in the room. Steve does play on this version...

This is a great song and album. There are other instrumentals on this album, but this is probably the best. Still my favorite song on this album is not an instrumental, it's called The Virgin & the Gypsy with excellent vocals from Pete Hicks. Steve Hackett has a lot of great songs and his albums have been consistently good, for the most part, throughout the years. The albums in the 80s were weaker, IMO, but his his more recent stuff has been great. Probably my favorite Steve Hackett song is "Shadow of the Heirophant" from his first album "Voyage of the Acolyte". Many consider this to be a "lost Genesis album" because Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford performed on it and it contains a lot of material that was originally considered for Nursery Cryme/Foxtrot/Selling England. But it is definitely a Steve Hackett album through and through and a great one. I'm seeing him March 8th. And big thanks to your wife for letting you see the show on your anniversary. You should bring her, I think seeing it performed live would get her to really appreciate the music.

If you want more Steve Hackett, I'd suggest listening to The Steppes, which is kind of like Spectral Mornings, but even better. You should also try Star of Sirius, which features Phil Collins on drums and vocals, as well as Mike Rutherford on bass I believe.

Great choice J.P. However, the best track by far on that album is the opener Every Day. A brilliant song about a friend who succumbs to drugs. The solo in the second part of the song with incredible solo is so melodic and powerful you have to listen to this track. Many of the songs on Please Don't Touch and Spectral Mornings were rejected by Genesis, that's why Steve left couldn't get his material on the Genesis albums. So JP make sure you do Every Day by far Steve's best track ever.

You've got a great wife, Justin! Consider yourself fortunate. There's not many of the first gen prog musicians capable of bringing it like Hackett still can. He's really carrying the flame not just of classic Genesis music, but really the ethos of ALL those first gen bands. You can take or leave his current solo work, but when he and the band go into the old warhorses it sounds like the real deal.

I'm proud to say, I have never seen Steve Hackett solo show , but I have seen Genesis twice . Once in Chicago , The selling England by the pound tour, the original band with Peter Gabriel opening up with Watcher of the skies at the Chicago auditorium. The second show , The lamb lie's down on Broadway at the Boston theater and opening up with the album. I didn't hear spectral mornings until last year. when I hear this song, it makes me think of peaceful morning and happiness all around and a sunny day.

Perhaps not "subdued" in Genesis, but rather reserved.

This song is so dense, you could cut it with a cake knife!
This is the time when Steve was experimenting with the Roland Guitar synthesizer, that you can hear prominently. He probably should have left a few empty spaces on this track, because it's so beautiful that you barely have time to catch your breath. You should check out the vocal version of this on You Tube! It's even more beautiful than this because it allows you that time to breathe!

Hi JP, it's great you got around to "Spectral Mornings" and that you enjoyed it.
I commend to you "Shadow of the Hierophant" and "Morpheus" (from Steve Rothery's album "The Ghosts of Pripyat" on which Hackett plays).
I also *strongly* recommend "Chelsea Monday" by Marillion (studio version). Pleeeeeeze give it a try.
Regarding your loving and understanding wife; she's a selfless sweetheart deserving, I would suggest, of a reciprocal profession of love from yourself.
An idea: on one day this year she has complete freedom to call the shots; she can pick the date, the time, the place, the activity and conditions (e.g. with you or without you)?
    Keep up the good work!
PS. If she's up for it, going to the concert with your wife would allow her to SEE how happy it makes you and, maybe, her too.
PPS. When I saw Hackett in concert a few years back he played "Firth of Fifth". I'm pretty sure he'll be playing it for you.

Do you know what a horrible day is? The day you discover that you grew up among barbarians. When you think you do someting good to friends of childhood and youth, make them listen to Spectral Mornings and they say it's too monotone and therefore too long.
This is one of the pieces I wish they would go on for quite a while. Not forever. It can change with the Bolero-equal "Shadow of the Hierophant" from his first album. This album is not completely like the title piece. You don't write pieces like "Spectral Mornings" every week. But all in all there is great material on it well worth to listen to. It was the second album he released after leaving Genesis because the other three members refused to give him a quarter of the space on the Genesis albums. Ok. Great loss for Genesis. Huge win for everybody else.
There is indeed something common between Hackett and Gilmour. Both of them are able to create amazing sounds and melodies and do not permanently need to show how speedy they can be. But their musical feeling is great and they impress me much more than shredders can do although I respect their skills.
I wish you so much fun experiencing Steve Hackett live. I saw him only once about 30 years ago. It was memorable. Of course it was. And give an extra hug and a fat smack to your wife for her kindness and tell her it came all the way across the Atlantic.
some wise man's words at the end :
Groucho: "You know what an auction is?"
Chico: "Yes, I came from Italy across the Atlantic auction."

This is without a doubt my favorite Steve Hackett song. The opening is like a sprinkling of fairy dust that dissolves you and carries you away. The dramatic entrance of the guitar electrifies you like you just floored it in a powerful sportscar and that driving backbeat against the alternating symphonic keyboards is like flying down the highway in a smooth, quiet machine. Steve's guitar evokes so much emotion as he bends the strings and hits those high notes that it always feels like a listening experience more than just delight. BTW, JP, I live in New Orleans, but I had tickets to the Orlando show last March and I kept them for the rescheduled show April 22, so I hope they don't cancel it again due to Covid. If the show goes on, I'll look for ya.

I'm so happy you enjoyed that piece as much as I do! His solo stuff is probably my favorite of any artist's work. It's not always 100% love or even like for me, and some of it has aged better than other bits, but it's always done with integrity. I always respect where he's coming from, which means a lot to me.
As for the rest of the album, it has lots of different types and tones of songs, some quiet, some small and quaint or little texture pieces, some grand (although it's hard to top Spectral Mornings for grand). Based on your reaction, um, heck yeah you should listen to the whole thing... as well as any of his other albums that you can get to. I'd suggest 'Everyday' next, or if you want an example of his later work, I'd suggest "Rise Again." Maybe start with his stuff from the 70's - those are all great albums. The later you get in his catalog, the more you'll find him taking the role of the 'lead guitarist' shredding front and center... but it's always, always done tastefully. He's *so* underrated. You have a whole lot of amazing tunes to discover spread across his albums.
I saw Hackett in Oakland this last October, and it was an incredible show. Great players, great atmosphere, incredible tunes (his and Genesis)... nothing to dislike. Who knows how long Hackett will be touring, especially the US? This may be your only opportunity. Your wife has really given you a special gift to get to enjoy such a unique experience. She sounds like a perfect lifemate!
I hope you'll let us know how the show went. I almost got a little choked up by how much you deeply enjoy something that is so important to me, and whom so few of my friends even know exists! I don't get to share that much, in-person or vicariously! So glad you're enjoying it, and that you really get it :)

I went through a progression of listening to Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Peter Gabriel, and Steve Hackett over the years, but nothing has brought me more consistent listening bliss than Steve’s solo work and work with early Genesis. Spectral Mornings is my favorite Hackett song of all, especially when you listen to the two songs before it (originally the whole side 2 of the album). My brother and I saw the SEBTP/SM show in Phoenix in 2019, and I had tickets to take my son to see the same show in Orlando in 2020 since there were no shows near New Orleans where we live. We’re still planning to attend the rescheduled show in April 2021, so maybe we can grab a drink before the show.
