Really convoluted episode where the original crime is a Trojan Horse and the real crime winds up being the grandfather's death, which was masterminded by the aunt, who took him to an experimental cancer clinic where he would die during 2010 to take advantage of a huge loophole. Several families sent their dying loved ones to the clinic under the scheme. The only person who could testify against the aunt was her ex-wife, who on paper was her adopted daughter as a result of NY at the time not recognizing gay marriage. Cutter gets the adoption dissolved, but a judge grants the two women spousal privilege, until the ruling is overturned. The ex-wife, however, refuses to testify because she is pregnant and the egg is her ex-wife's, and she was afraid to lose the baby. Eventually, Cutter and Rubirosa get the clinic chief to admit to his role in the scheme, and they get the spouse to testify against her ex-wife by threatening to award custody of their unborn child to the male cousin from the original scene. It's one of the most convoluted episodes in the series' 20-year run. I got a migraine writing this.

Spoiler..... The girl's death was accidental OD, that was right. The cousin did give her the drugs but didn't know she would die, he's not smart. When they investigate they find out the aunt pulled her dying father out of his own cancer hospital and put him in another one that people don't get better. Rich children have been putting their dying parents in the bad clinic so they would die in 2010 and not pay tax on their inheritance. Aunt's ex-girlfriend is pregnant with aunt's biological child(egg donor). Aunt had adopted ex-girlfriend so they could share property, Cutler got the adoption nullified but the ex still said she wouldn't testify because Aunt was holding the baby over her. The accountant worked with all the rich heirs from other dead families. It ends with the ex-girlfriend saying she would testify to keep the baby she is pregnant with from being raised by party boy from the beginning. Aunt decides to give up the accountant, so aunt and accountant are in trouble. That's how it ends.
@@susivarga7303 Yeah, it would be weird for a police procedural to focus on cases where the wrong guy is nabbed/prosecuted. Every so often they do have a sympathetic defendant, or at least a somewhat murky case, and a competent but non-scumbaggy defense attorney.

Someone Spoil the episode for me pls. My money is the Aunt killed the the Grandfather and the daughter (dead woman) found out about it that's why she's so messed up and doing drugs.
Basically what happened is that the girl died of an accidental overdose. The boy gave her the drugs, but he didn't intend to kill her. As for the aunt, she didn't kill the grandfather, per see, but she did move him to a different hospital where he would get worse care and die faster. She did this because she wanted him to die in 2010. See (and this actually happened in real life), President Bush cut the Estate Tax as part of his 2001 tax cuts, the estate tax (a tax imposed on large inheritances) was set to be repealed in 2010, but the democrats had it reinstated for 2011. However, that meant that, for the year 2010, any inheritance would be completely tax-free. So the aunt wanted the grandfather to die in 2010 so that she could collect his massive fortune without having to pay any taxes on it.
That is her real hair. Many times she was wearing a wig, as most women of color are made to feel they must. The show used the opportunity to show her cancer. In reality though, that was her real hair at the time.
