Mascot Tryout Hints…beyond the basic “Be Big”: 1. Costume: Make sure your hair is tied so that it cannot get in your face during the tryout. My daughter liked wearing a nylon balaclava. The balaclava can be wet to keep you cool and washed in good smelling detergent in case the costume head is less than fresh smelling. 2. Music: a. When you create your music try to include very obvious cues for you activity changes in the skit. For instance, if you need to change props during parts of your performance, make sure there is an obvious sound effect or song change so you don’t miss your cue. It can be hard to hear inside the costume and during tryouts your nerves may get the best of you. You will feel more confident in your performance if you know your cues will not be missed. If you get into the tryout room and the music cannot be heard, do not be afraid to stop your audition. There is no way you will be successful if you cannot hear the music. (even better if you can communicate that without speaking in your costume….a mortal mascot crime!) b. Take your own Bluetooth speaker to the tryouts. Make sure it is already connected to your phone, and be sure to have a copy of your music in your phone. JUST IN CASE! Cover your own booty. (if there is a music mishap, this shows the coach and judges that you are super responsible and willing to take care of your own needs). Also, be sure to send your music to the coach in advance….don’t wait for the day of tryouts. 3. Props: Make sure you can easily pick up your props when wearing the costume hands. Posters laying face down on the gym floor are nearly impossible to grab. Use a piece of duct tape to make a 3D tab on the back of the poster. ALWAYS be prepared for the worst. If you thought your poster was going to lean against something and it would be easy to grab, but then it fell over for whatever reason, you would lose valuable time in the performance trying to pick it up. This is not the comedic relief you are seeking. BEING PREPARED is BEING PROFESSIONAL. 4. Secondary Routine: Have a 2nd routine prepared. If there is a tie between 2 mascots, you could be asked to go back in and improvise. This actually happened to me. Have thoughts planned ahead of time as to what you might do. Evolution of dance is a good -no prop- idea….and there are many versions available online for download….just have one in your phone & learn it at home as your secret weapon. Even if you don’t need it for tryouts, when you make mascot, knowing an evolution of dance montage is great for events where prop set up is not feasible.
