He's re-inserting the ribbon cable(s) from the scanner unit to the printer base. I have an XP-4100; by removing the left-side panel (requires removing a few screws) I was able very easily to access the cables and accomplish the same repair.

What specifically do you mean "reinserting" that is not clear...how would I know where it should be or what it is supposed to do.

looks like he's just reseated the scanner cable, but shouldn't need to do that unless you've been throwing your scanner around.

The flex cable was loose, he reinsert it to fix the problem.
