Gosh. Hardy ever get to see this sort of thing! Thank you very much Pathe for tracking down and making available this to the world. Well worth the effort - thanks again.

The morse was," N RE OPERATIONAL AT 0800 ii 0800 HRS DBST ii DBST 5 MAY 1945 bt ar " The two letter i (dit dit, dit dit) known as a short break was used as a repeat prosign by the operator . BT (dah dit dit dit dah) is a long break, used to separate text from procedure and AR (dit dar dit dah dit) is the prosign for end of message. It was also used for end of work or no more messages.

Surrender all forces "in the air" as if there were any forces left in the air !

Alfa Won Yes. Well, the Allies would hardly dictate, 'the surrender of everything except for the enemy air forces because we've negated them already and so it would seem too much like hard work to bother to mention them now."
      Wouldn't you agree?

Monty did not get a lot of credit for winning the North African campaign. It was easier to be Rommel getting all the media attention for being a dashing Desert Fox. But it was harder to be an unsung hero like Monty working hard quietly to pull off a stunning victory at El Alamein. Monty was really underrated.

He held this speech on Timeloberg "Victory Hill" near my hometown Lüneburg.

Growing was told my gran served under him from Belgium to the surrender. Trying to find out more as her records are largely classified but before she died, she said she marched into Berlin with Monty. Intriguing to think as he speaks here, she might've been nearby working at his HQ.

There seems to be a lot more audio extant of Field Marshal Montgomery than of General Patton.

Operation Market Garden was actually the fastest allied advance against German opposition in the entire September 1944 to February 1945 period. It took 100km in just 3 days and did better than the other allied campaigns that same autumn such as the Lorraine, Hurtgen Forest, Alsace, Vosges, Operation Queen etc.

Operation Market garden was not Montgomery's operation. Montgomery planned operation Comet but cancelled.

Montgomery was the most successful Western Allied ground commander of WW2 by some way. He took more ground through more countries while facing more quality German opposition than any other Western Allied ground commander in WW2. Nobody did more to help win the ground war in the west than Bernard Montgomery.
