I'm loving these podcasts about Lucille Ball! So glad to be able to hear them on UA-cam. I am a Lucy fan!Thank you TCM and Ben I love the TCM channel. 70s-80s childhood.
I think people really underestimate everything. Desi contributed to I love Lucy. People here are saying Lucy was miserable I don’t know about that but i think Desi really polished Lucys rougher edges. I love love love Lucy and Desi and I love Lucy is one of the most hilarious well done tv comedies of all time
Fun fact: Ginger Rogers' mother, Lela E. Rogers, played Ginger's mother "Mrs. Applegate" in Billy Wilder's "The Major & The Minor." Striking resemblance to Ginger.
On underestimating Desi (which someone here asked about): When I interviewed Lucille Ball for a magazine article (and much later wrote her biography. I asked her how much Desi had contributed to her success. She said, "Business-wise 100%"
Amazing woman/legend who deserved more respect than she was given after her last TV show ended because people in this country don't appreciate older people, especially older women.
As a bit of a fan of Ms Ball, I wonder if it was a case of her getting older or was it that she had just " milked " her character for too long? If you look at the writing credits for her different series, they all featured, at some point, the same three writers that she had started with at I Love Lucy. Lucy as a slightly cockeyed grandmother might have worked as a series.
We lived near Jamestown, in Olean, NY, where we purchased a leather topped desk at a fundraiser, an auction. The story was that this desk had belonged to a man Lucy dated, somewhat seriously before going to California. I've never found a reference to a boyfriend who became a doctor, now I'm wondering if the desk belonged to "Doc"?
Love the stuff I'm hearing about for the first time but I can't help but think that it's just snobbishness that you completely glossed over her non-showgirl appearance while at Columbia in a 1934 Three Stooges Short, 'Three Little Pigskins'. I know she said that the only thing she learned from the Stooges was "how to duck", but I'd still like to hear about it.
If you are 100 years old then you seen and heard it all but, for the new generations this is all new. Think 🤔 before posting you are not alone on this planet.
@@kjgammon1658 in all sincerety , i like all these people for taking an interest in Lucille Ball who was the epitome of gracious ,kind living , led her life according to her principles of good ,clean entertainment for her public ,so if in this day and age , when i hear of all our beloved authors being banned ( P.G Wodehouse , Enid Blyton , Agatha Christi etc) and comic book heroes taking on, new , unnecessary gay identities ,its heartening to see people still taking an interest in good old Lucy As an aside ,when i recently lost my brother ( who was ten years younger...i had literally brought him up ) and suffered a mild heart attack due to all the crying , Lucy and her shenanigans were what kept me afloat . I admire her as a woman who triumphed in a man's world and did not compromise on her principles to the end of her days Bravo Lucy you still have diehard fans !
I DO NOT love Lucy. Always struck me as not a nice person at all. Anything to justify this feeling of mine? No. Just my gut reaction to her. She sends off an extraordinarily bad vibe to me.
… maybe it’s not your “gut feeling,” it’s just indigestion. Because television and even film entertainment would not have been the same without the great Lucille Ball. And if you listened to this episode, you were told that she wanted to bring her family out to California. And she did it! Ginger Rogers had her mother to help her. Lucille Ball did it on her own … Lucille Ball was a gutsy lady; maybe not classy, but certainly gutsy. Give her the respect due her.
Beginning around 1960, Lucy started behaving brittle and impatient in general and never grew out of it. After Desi basically checked out of the marriage, Lucy ended up settling on Gary Morton, who tried acting like a boss on her other shows but wasn't Desi.
@@bethgood3214 …. Lucille Ball is an American institution and we are standing up for her and what she gave to the American public in entertainment. Whoever “M” is, he is in a minority that is barely enough for a hand of bridge.

What gems these recordings are; a young California; clean air, Orange trees; those days must have been wonderful.
I wish that I had been born earlier so that I could have enjoyed these stars in their prime.

Thanks I will always love Lucy....The Stage Door story is great... and The Kate Hepburn coffee ...lol
Lucille Ball pulled a Lucy Ricardo in that Hepburn story.
lol Hepburn was great actress but she always came off as a real horse's ass .....I guess even at the start of her career ?

Sold for that amount five years ago (2016). Estimated value now is $2,361,300.
I looked it up too! Funny no mention is made of Lucy having lived there.

Can't wait to see Nicole's work but in terms of looks Debra Messing & Oscar Isaac were more appropriate.
I'm counting on the makeup, hair, and costume people to work their magic on Nicole (and her own talent for the acting).
